I think we should start a new topic to keep it straight on who has what for toutle tags. This way maybe we can combine it into one instead of all these topics. I have a toutle rifle that I drew with three other guys. Four tags all together. I am still willing to help others out on pointers in the unit.
-
I drew the Toutle ML cow tag with my wife. Normally I bow hunt and she goes muzzleloading, but this year I am going to Montana in September for deer and elk. The Toutle should be a great hunt. My father in law drew the archery bull tag last year and said there were tons of cows and small bulls, he settled for a satellite 5 point that I thought was pretty nice.
-
Did you get to go with him to learn your way around the unit a little? Cow tags should be golden. Good luck.
-
I drew archery bull, me and my hunting partner.
-
Get you get to go with him to learn your way around the unit a little? Cow tags should be golden. Good luck.
I used to hunt the archery season in what is now Lewis River at the boarder, it was a small GMU called something else at the time, Lewis River incorporated it a few years back. The darn elk on the toutle side would come to the road but wouldn't cross it. It was a 3 mile walk down to the road so 3 mile hike straight up will be a pain if we have to do it. Hopefully the gates on the other side will be open and we can drive in a ways. My mother in law and her husband are in the advanced hunter program and may be volunteering to man the gates during the season if that is an option.

Quality elk rifle toutle. 5-15 nov. cant wait. trying to find a Weyerhouser map. Rick

You must be talking about the Marble up the 7400 to the 5500. We use to be able to drive up to the 5500 and we would hike in an old spur in the Marble. There were a couple guys I met up there in the later 90's that were pretty cool. We killed a few elk up that way. That is another area I will be looking at.
-
i have two wanting one for better road system. will be camping with family at silver lake. on the 8th july. going to scout. i will stop at the store then. Rick ;)
-
I have an older St Helens Tree Farm map for Weyerhaeuser. It must be older because I bought it for $3.99. If your around Longview you might also check Bob's. Maybe be able to call the Toutle Store or Bob's and buy it over the phone. I will be going through Longview next weekend and can stop and look and mail one to you Rick.

I wonder if someone could call Weyerhaeuser directly and get it from them. I have an old number I found for their communication center. 360-425-2150. No idea if this is still good. If so it will be a good number to keep on you just in case there is an emergency and need something.

Quality Elk Rifle Toutle Bull. My dad, brother and I drew the tag as a group hunt. I hunted there one other time back in 2005ish and there was a lot of elk in there. My brother drew the tag in 2008 and said he had never seen so many nice bulls.
-
What was killed in 2005 and 2008. I killed a brush rack 5 in 1995 and the guy that drew with me shot a 3x4 that was standing next to my 5 point. My dad killed a nice even 5 in 1996. I took a friend who drew with me this year in 2004 and he killed a brush rack 3x4. There are some bulls in there. There is some brush in there too.

Yep that was it, Marble, I kept wanting to say Margaret. We were up at the top in the late 90s, my father in law is the one that shot the the big cougar with his bow. That is all we got that year but did well on elk the rest of the time. Nate had a big camp at the end of the road we were just before him with a camper and a wall tent.

the two maps i have so far. Rick

I would think that LC is about as good as it gets. I could be wrong. A guy named Charles Price www.gametrails.com (http://www.gametrails.com) has good maps if he is still in business. I just pulled this off another map I have so unsure if he is still in business.
-
I drew a muzzle loader bull tag.
-
My partner and I drew archery Quality Bull tags. Never been in the unit until last Saturday. Only saw one elk, but he was a dandy. Just had a couple of hours with the kids, so not really much of a scouting trip. We'll be back up there this weekend. Don't get that LC map wet the ink will bleed. Arnolds Maps in vancouver has Wayerhaeuser St. Helens tree farm maps. I got one there this weekend.
-
I drew the Quality Bull tag with a group of 8 members for the toutle for archery season. Only reason i put in for it was because of the groups desicion, Im excited to learn the unit but all 7 of the other hunters are not hunting the early season in the Toutle, so i am flyin solo... So i was hoping for maybe a few pointers or anything that someone could help out, that would be awesome! Good luck to all tag holders and pray for some rain that way it doesn't get shut down like a couple years ago!!

Bob's in Longview carries the st helens tree farm map. They go fast, when they get them in.
The logged the 7200 mainline at the south of the last bridge. Around Lake View peak area, last season.
That herd is probably scattered all over.
I got my bull up on the 1490 rd, on the top of the pass.
Lot of track in the snow up on elk mt. last year.

My tip -- Join your other seven buddies :IBCOOL: My bribe check should be good in a couple of days. Let everyone else know too! I can probably afford a few more generous donations to head their way ;)
You should have a great time with or without them - Good luck.
-
I drew the Quality rifle tag. Been up there once looking for access. Does anyone know how to get to the 4100 or the 4200? Could not find it. Made it to the 2410 and walked a couple of miles. No animals. All dark timber and no clear cuts or reprod.
-
My dad drew the rifle quality elk tag.
Rick- As others have mentioned, the store in toutle has the map. That's where I got mine last year.
-
I want to say you turn right at the old mill and follow that road out. It could even be the South Toutle River Road. Its been a number of years since I came in that way. Usually when I head in there its from cutting through the coweeman. I could be wrong.
-
I think you are correct, DS. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the SFT road is the 4100. That is the way we went in last year for my cow tag.
-

Isnt it within a rock throw from the village of Toutle?
-
Check the go hunt maps on wdfw web site, it will show the DNR roads with their road numbers Plus depending on how and where you camp, it will help with knowing the dnr and weyco boundaries.
When my group drew archery tags three years ago we camped on dnr land and walked into the weyco land. The cool part was after we got one down we contacted the weyco hotline and security opened the gate for me to drive in and retrieve the fruits of the hunt.
Happy hunting
-
Thanks for the info guys. That is the way I went in. Thought I was at the end. Maybe not. Have lots of time to find my way. Wish it wasn't a $100.00 bill every time I went down there but oh well just make the price per pound go up. Good luck everyone. Can't wait to hear all the stories and see the pictures.

The gate should be at the bridge.

You go down the road that is straight across from the Toutle store. Once on that road, you have to veer right onto another road (I will check road names on my map when I get back from Chelan tomorrow). After that, you just stay to the right on the mainline along the river. The gate you are referrin to at the bridge was open during my cow hunt last year.
The one thing I just remembered about my newer Weyco map is that the big chunks of state land do not have the roads labeled on the map.
-
I-5 to castle rock exit 49 east about 10-12 miles turn right on south toutle road across road from drews grocery. 6-7 miles up south toutle road turn right onto the 4100 it will be at the big fields after the long staright stetch. the 4200 is on the left about 3- miles down the 4100. the road is gated at the old steelhead boundry bridge crossing the south fork about 12 miles up the 4100 from the begining of the road. the left side of the road from the 4200 all the way up is toutle. right side is coweeman until you get to the 4950 which is right across the deadline/gated bridge. if you have any other questions PM me. the new weyco maps show roads well but dont do crap for terrian. i like the older weyco maps they numbered even the spur roads. the new maps only show road numbers for main lines.

I drew Toutle Quality bull archery
I have recieved some good info from guys on here and that has been much appreciated.
Now a couple more trips down to decide if I go in from the north or southside.
Thanks again to all
I'll be camped either at Kid valley or Cougar RV parks depending on my access choice.
getting MT bikes ready and making a game cart trailer next up.
-
My dad and I drew Quality Rifle tags for the Nov 5-15th hunt and I will be scouting the area quite a few times between now and then. I plan on heading in there this Saturday to get a little feel for the area.
-
My bro-in-law and I drew archery cow tags. My first year with bow for elk. Took a side trip to the Loo-Witt line and headed up 3000 line to the south. Still a fair amount of snow up around 3500'.
From what I saw in there (my first time in the area) should be opportunity opening day. We will be in there on opener, back to work for a few days and back in 'em hopefully Friday night Sept 9th.
My wife and my freezer are looking for a nice fat cow elk!

Believe me it will be a good time. Especially if you have a good group of people to hunt with.

Needless to say i dont know the unit at all. i will be scouting ALOT! i have the LC SPORTSMAN map with a Weyerhauser map on the way. I could use and appreciate any suggestions, pointers and help you guys could offer. Thanks guys!

In the previous posts I have listed areas that you can expect to be open during the archery season. I would concentrate on those areas. Its going to be hard to scout due to gates being locked unless they are allowing walk in or bike in past the gates. There are allot of elk in the unit. You will have a good time.

Got my toutle map. Now I have all three . Just leaving the toutle store they have quite a few maps still.

The WA DNR Public Lands Quad for the area is the best map that I found when I drew Toutle in 2009. Much better than the Weyco map in my opinion. It's a good idea to get one if you're interested in the state land options.
-
Where do you find that one. The WA DNR Public Lands Quad
-
You can buy them in Tumwater at the Department of Printing, or you can order them from the Department of Printing website. First go to the DNR website, and there will be information on where the maps can be purchased.
-
Gonna start scouting on Saturday! Pretty jacked up! I will share my experience on Sunday.

I have been looking all over for St. Helens Tree Farm maps. Where did you find them?
-
Thanks for the info Bobcat.
-
The gas station/store in Toutle has the Weyerhaeuser maps. That's where Rick said he got his. I got one there four years ago, but I think it was only $3.99 then.
-
I paid like $10 or $12 for my map at the Toutle store last year.
-
I had this tag two years ago, and had considerable help from members on this site, coupled with scouting trips. I am probably more help to the rifle holders as that was the season I got, so if you need any advice let me know!
Here's our Bulls. I never saw anything spectacular in the unit, but it was a ton of fun. It was frustrating to see 7 4/5 points the day before season and then not see another bull until Wednesday night though haha :) But man, there was a lot of action, into elk daily.
-
i bought at the Toutle store there are plenty. Rick ;)
-
I have found that the Weyco tree farm maps are dead nuts accurate as far as reading the road systems.
I saw it a few posts ago where someone said that the DNR roads are the lines not numbered. That is true. As i understand it the Weyco land gives way to DNR wildlife management areas headed down towards the Loo-Witt and the North Fork. Anything numbered on the Weyco map is on their timberlands.
I don't know how the rest of you feel, but I think Weherhauser is an excellent steward of the land. I wish more of us were better stewards. If there wasn't so much abuse of these foreast lands they might actually leave more of the gated areas open.
Has anyone noticed that 90+% of the beer cans thrown out on logging roads are Busch Lite. WTF????
-
When EITW did their clean up in Winston this year that was the majority of beer can found.
Busch Beer if favored by the loggers.
-
the map was $7.99. cant wait to hunt. is it hard finding camping close by. i will be in my cabelas extreme tent. Rick ;)
-
Rick last year and before if you go through the weyhauser land and hit state land you can camp right where you hunt lots of people were there last year but people had some trouble with camp robbers I have been there alot and we have an archery tag this year so will look for a spot.
-
i have 6 bear traps i can put around my camp. i hate thieves. when i fish the kalama you couldnt park up high they would break in to your rig. i work hard for my stuff. thank's Del. Rick ;)
-
Of all the years to draw a Toutle tag. My daughter, who is pregnant has a rifle tag. She will be 8 months a long mid November. Last time I hunted the Toutle was 1999. My wife got a small 3pt around the 3000 line.
Would prefer not to take my daughter all the way up there. And I don't want her to cancel out her tag. Never know if she will draw another tag in the next 10 years.
Any Idea's closer in??
-
If you guys are going to be on the south end over next week keep an eye on your stuff. There is a rainbow festival going on. Meaning a lot of freaks camping out. There have been problems already in Skamania County. If you want more information on them do a google search on them. Enjoy your weekend scouts.

The state is not always completely inflexible. Myself, I would make a phone call to the director himself and see what your options are. A daughter that is really good at crying on the phone might make a big difference ;) It's worth a try!
Good luck!

There's a broke down rainbow painted school bus right off the freeway in Woodland. The hippies were scattering like cockroaches.

I just looked at the LC and Weyeco maps at Bob's and I have to say that they are not very detailed. The Weyeco map use to be much more detail. To bad. They still work just not like it use to be. I wonder if the gametrails maps are still good quality.
-
Ya the tree farm map is much better.
-
looked around the north side
Lots of gates.
Better get Mt Bikes
-
i'll have a mt bike and game cart, elk sled, topackboards. lot's of game bag's. useaully hunt by my self. i'll try and get a dnr map tomorrow. i do have two extra maps. also i have some very nice custom elk call's i've been making. i have my toeboard's louder but great sound. also have another that is very good. useded them back in 05 for predator's. they are the one's alot of the other callmaker's are using. going to make a couple now out of elkhorn. Rick ;)
-
We will be there Rick and have guys that will help you pack we camp on the riverdale race track. Will see you at the barbeque and remember don;t go trying to do it all by yourself even if you can you don;t need to over do it. I will give you our cell numbers and you just need to call.
-
thank's Del. Rick
-
I don't know if the dnr maps would be any better than the tree farm maps? Mountain bike I have, no trailer though. Probably one on the back and other tied to the bike cross member and walk it out.
-
crunchy have carried a few bear quarters out on mt bikes. help's big time. i'm happy with the map from the toutle store. cant wait. Rick ;)
-
The DNR maps will show you what is state land and what is private. That's the advantage of having them. Mostly they do not show Weyerhaeuser road numbers, so for that it's good to have the Weyerhaeuser maps. It's also very helpful to have a GPS so you can always know where you are, and can find your location on a map.
-
Did a bit of scouting yesterday. Lots of closed gates. Also saw quite a few elk. Stil some snow above the five way. It was my first time in the unit, other than fishin the south fork. I will know it like the back of my hand come September. Going back down on Wednesday or Thursday. Lots to learn! :)
-
I celebrated Independence Day in the Toutle unit. Couldn't get my bro to come along so I headed out solo at 4:30 AM and first elk I saw was a dandy bull gleeming in the first warm rays of sunlight. It was so bright out that it was hard to see in the woods. It was still very easy to find elk in the north part of the unit.
Midday I headed south and checked out the 8100 line. Looks like limited access into the 556 from this FS road. Drove up the Rock Creek and got lost for a while until I had to get out and get back north. I wanted to check out the Kalama drainage. I thought it would be easier to access through Woodland.
Yeah I will be on mounain bike too more than likely. Got a custom trailer set up from last year still waiting to haul out its first elk quarters.
Deer Slayer, if you are talking about GREEN Trails maps they do not GT maps for anything west of St Helens. We used to have a Metzgers maps in Tacoma. They are gone. I used to go there and get the 40 ft line quadrangle maps. You know, the real good detailed topo maps.

Nope take a look at gametrails.com. Its my favorite map. Atleast it use to be.

Headed down to the north end Sunday. Looking forward to wearing out a little boot leather. This trip should be way more productive than the last thanks to this thread. Have a good weekend all.

How did it go?

Didn't make it down. I will be going this weekend. Will report back findings.
-
will be camping seaquest camp ground thursday through sunday. going to learn roads ealry each morning. will be a few miles from the Toutle store entrance. Rick ;)
-
Be prepared for horribly numbered roads. I checked out that campground. Not bad. I wonder if they will let hunters in for showers (paid showers of course)? I will be down scouting more this week. Thursday or Friday. 2700/2710... somewhere in that aea. Good luck scoutin and have fun
-
Are you guys getting the roads figured out? Seeing any elk?
-
Home now was great meeting you. Only made it in there Friday. Rick

It was nice meeting you Rick. Great conversation. I look forward to talking in the future. Get back out there ASAP! Take care.
-
If you enter at the sedemate dam the road is a little easier than going up the 3000 line the father you go the rougher it gets. The 2700 hundred is;nt bad and elk are close.
-
Last time I was there the sediment dam road had a gate on it closed and no motorized vehicle signs up, 2 weeks ago
-
Yeah I found my way in. Can't believe I didn't see the 4100. Must have thought it was a residential driveway. Thanks for the help. Was way more productive trip this time. Does any one know if they open that gate at the river on the 4100 during the season? I climbed that hill on the 5200. Good looking area but quite the hump. Next visit will be the areas off of the 4200/4250.
-
last year the gate by the sedement ponds were not open all archery season.ihad a mud flow tag .had to come in on the 4100 .long drive to the mud flow unit.
-
Lets just hope the keep the gates open that are open now.
-
You must have seen a good one. Congrats.
-
Know were to hunt now. Can't wait. Rick
-
Headed up this weekend for some more scouting. Any one know if they have closed any of the gates off the 4100?
-
They were open last week.
-
The 4100 was closed for me. I hope they keep it closed. Cut down on road hunters.
-
closed at the bridge still ?
Thats good
-
Just got the documentation from WDFW with the details regarding road closures and additional access.
It states - "Weyerhauser may allow motorized access through normally locked gates, barring closure due to fire danger or other operational reasons:
However, as of today (Aug 19) the Weyerhauser St. Helens Tree Farm is closed due to fire danger, therefore the additional access through the Weyerhauser property is not available at this time."
It goes onto give a hotline to check on the lifting of the fire danger closure and then it states -
"The information below only applies if the fire closure has been lifted and access has again been permitted by Weyerhauser:
Please be aware of the following guidelines regarding the different access scenarios you may encounter on Weyerhauser property:
If a gate is closed and locked with no motoized access sign, no MOTORIZED access is available. Walk in hunting is available through these gates."
The next point deals with logging activity and it appears that there should be a page 2 of which I did not receive. There is also recreation access rules from Weyerhauser along with images of various logging road signs and a detailed map outlining the GMU.
Can anybody clue me in to whether "closed due to fire danger" means no access at all or just motorized access?
Has anybody else received this info yet and is there a page 2 from WDFW?

I will go check the mail and let you know.

Closed due to fire danger are the signs you do not want to see and are strictly inforced. They mean NO access at all....................
-
Get your bikes tuned up and if you have a cart get it ready as well.

Absolutely right. If caught it will result in a criminal trespass citation.

I got my packet yesterday. My letter was double sided and continued on the back of the page. I wasn't impressed with the information provided. Everything was "if" or "may be" - if they change access status; there may be gates open; there may be volunteers available at gates. There wasn't any real specific information other than to call the Weyerhauser info line. At least the map was decent with areas of browse damage to trees.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

So
Does anyknow if it is CLOSED for everything or just motorized vehicles ?

I got my letter two days ago. I get the impression it is closed period! If it isnt open for the early hunt i will eat my tag, I drew with 2 points anyway. Im not gonna hunt the river bottom with 200 other hunters. Not my style. I wont even be mad. It is what it is. It would be nice to hunt what i have scouted all summer though. :dunno:

Even when Weyco land is all closed for fire danger but you can still access the state land via several different corridors. Call the Weyco hotline and listen to the corridor access descriptions. You are free to drive them through Weyco to get to state land. Plenty of elk on state land, but if you feel you need to eat your tag if you can't hunt on Weyco I understand and I'll thank you now for the one more bull available when I draw Toutle again.

I drew an archery Toutle bull permit in 2001, and Weyerhaeuser was closed for fire danger. They would not let me walk or drive on their road to get to the large block of state land. They even had a guard sitting at the gate all day to be sure nobody parked at the gate and walked in. I thought about hiring a helicopter to fly me in but never did.
So, there's no guarantee you will have access into the Toutle unit. And that's why they now also include a late season with the archery permit. If you can't hunt the early, you've still got the late.

Was down in the winston unit last Sunday. Didn't see any signs that it was closed for fire danger. Did see what looked to be a weyerhauser employee driving behind one of the gates

Thanks sounds like the 4100 corridor is open for vehicles and behind the gates on MT Bikes
That works fine

Arnolds Maps in vancouver washington can get you any map you want if he does not have it already ha can order it.360 6957897. They put his company and info every year in the hunting reg book. Great guy and easy to deal with. Arnolds son now runs the business and his name is Phil. Good luck, and straight shooting.

You guys are making this way more complicated than it is CALL THE HOTLINE IT TELLS YOU WETHER YOU CAN WALK OR RIDE BIKES IN PERIOD. The number is in you pamplet If a gate is open and there are fire restriction you CAN NOT DRIVE THROUGH THOSE GATE they are open for loggers, and operations in the area and not you. This is very much enforce and if caught big fine let me tell you. Maybe next time you put in for a tag you should do a little research before hand. :dunno: Oh yeah dont count on them opening the gates for you if you shot something. I also learned this the hard way. Happy trails.

I do my research, scouting and have called the hotline (its confusing).
My only question is are the side gates open or not for boot or vehicle ?
I hate to drive 3 hours to scout only to find out I can not get off the 4100 mainline to head up on the state patch
Can somebody throw me a PM if you know ?
