Just curious what the skull cap looked like. Were the pedicles separate, or fused? and is the bone a lot thicker on that side?
-
Great deer and gorgeous mount!

Normal pedicals. Size was normal and the same on each side. The antler just dropped down over the hair like a drop tine.
Thanks guys!
-
That is cool. I figured it was on its own pedicle. Nice work.
-
Excellent work, truly a unique trophy!!

Once in a lifetime buck! great work Charlie.

BTW, as part of the high school class that I taught last spring (Rifle Marksmanship/Hunter Education) we did a unit on Taxidermy. As a class project, I had the kids re-stuff the mule deer head that I use for the wildlife identification class (I ordered a cape already tanned off Ebay). For the eyes and the mouth I had a drawing contest and selected a team of 3 students that were best able to draw a deer's eye (they were dubbed "Team Eyeball" :chuckle: ). For examples, I printed off dozens of detail photos of your work and taped them to the wall all around where they were working on the mount. THe deer didn't turn out too bad. Thanks for the examples...

You should have gotten ahold of me, I would have donated a cape !
Glad I could at least be a little part of the project :chuckle:

Thanks Charlie. Might drop you a line next year. I plan to have the kids do some sort of taxidermy project each semester. Some of them really got into it. The cape I got was actually smaller than advertized (suprise!! %$#$# Ebay sellers, right...?) so we had to rehydrate and stretch. I had 4 guys pulling on it. The girl that sewed it up is headed to college in Alaska this fall. She had such a good time working on the mount she said she is kicking around the idea of trying to get a part-time job working at a taxi shop while she is in school. I would do a thread of the students working on it, but I didn't think to get permission from them before school got out and they are all minors etc... I will take a few pics of the finished product though

Let me know what you may need and what your looking for and I can get it all lined out for you if that helps. Those projects are pretty dang cool to do with the kids.
-
I dropped off a small colorphase bear hide with Michelle last fall for tanning. I think turning him into a rug will be our first semester project next year. For second semester I think we may do a whitetail. I have plenty of racks to choose from. If you come across a cape, let me know.
This summer they are remodeling my rifle range/classroom. The student projects will hang in the classroom portion on either side of the whiteboard (no one uses chalkboards anymore :chuckle: ) so I can use them as game identification examples.
-
I do have a dry tanned cape off a small whitetail if you got anything that is a young buck say 2 1/2 years old ?
-
I could make that work. Not mounting any big trophies for the class. Just classic examples of each species. I have a 3 point rack (4 point if you count the browtines, 8 point if you are from east of the Mississippi River, etc... since we had a 40 page thread not long ago arguing all the ways to count points... :chuckle: ) that would fit well on that size cape.
-
PM me your address and I will ship it to you for your class !
-
Awesome work and a heck of a buck!
-
im teaching a class too, can i have a free cape
