Went over to Banks Lake for the weekend to do some Walleye fishing. As an after thought I decided to hit Rufus Woods first on Friday morning. My girl friend is new to fishing and I wanted her and my son to catch some fish to get the weekend rolling. I targeted walleye knowing that we would hit plenty of triploids anyway. We hit some current seams where eddy currents are formed by land outcroppings, and even caught a few walleye when we could get our baits to the bottom. In fact Rufus was the only place we caught any keeper walleye. Banks and Roosevelt only put out small fish for us. But man oh man were the Triploids voracious. Sometimes they hit on the drop. We went back and hit it again on Sunday. We were using double whammies and crawlers at first, then went to whammies and plastic curly tail worms. We brought home 10- 3lb to 8 lb trips and released all the others plus 5 walleye to 22 inches. Pinch your barbs and use artificials and have the time of your life.

You have to open them in a program like picture manager or others then click options and re size them down.

If you haven't found a solution by later this evening I'll give you a call - we're headed out the door at the moment. Good luck! I'd like to see yer pics!

This place hasn't been a secret for quite some time. Sorry I'm making it even worse. I've been going over there killin fish for about 8 years now. It used to be a world class walleye fishery, but the triploids are making things real difficult. I'd like to see more folks go over there and thin the buggers out. It's a great place to take kids and other newbies to catch a bunch of big hard fighting fish. Like I said though, use artificials and oinch your barbs if you want to catch and release. Then you can be selective and only keep the bigger ones. I smoked up 5 of our fish the other day. Delicious. Got the new smoker all stinky.

here is a couple.. we had our limit in about 40 mins today..

Seriously what am I saying wrong that always seems to cause conflict ( I said USED TO BE THE BEST KEPT SECRETE ) Thats it :dunno:

Lets just tell the whole world while we are at it :bash: :bash:

well thats where I was coming from but Like they said It is no secrete anymore ........ just about 10 or 15 yrs ago ....
-
Well good while it lasted. Will be tough to find a non-crowded spot up there now and the wait at the boat ramp will be lonnnnngggggg
-
yeah I can remember laughing at people telling me they cought rainbows 3 or 4 pounds that were stocked in some lake and I would think to myself MAN IF THEY ONLY KNEW ABOUT RUFUS !!!! :chuckle: its all about making memories and I am glad I got to see it !!!
-
Here are my biggest from there. Been going there the last couple years. Man its fun...
One of those fish was 8lb 9oz, the other was 8lb 6oz. A buddy caught one that we weighed at 10lb 5oz. I love it at Rufus.
-
They just announced an emergency closure of Rufus Woods, no fish left :dunno: So might as well stay home and forget about it
-
I just heard the same thing. :)
-
Yep closed water till they ge the mercury level thing figured out. Did they ever say what was going on? I know several have been hospitalized just from touching the fish. :dunno: Scary deal!!!!
-
must be the bigfoot as he ran out of elk.... No fish left here... no bulls in the Blues..... man time to hunt in Oklahoma... only place left worth it...
-
well kinda hard to keep it quiet when the papers print that the pens (broke) and thousands of fish are swimming free.. let the craze go for awhile and everyone have a hay day.. it will slow down again like it did for awhile and it will be less crowded and back to somewhat normal
but i think it is great that people are getting out and having success right now.
-
Right now there are 300,000 fish between 5 lbs & 12 lbs that were released as a write off due to die off in another pen. (something about water columns, temps & gases)
One Okanogan guide says it will be hot for at least a year and is already booking cast & blast trips for this fall.
-
Its everyone from the westside announcing how hot it is, the locals know how the fishing is but we dont feel the need to announce it to the world. I wish that there was something over there that we all hoarded over the pass to go pillage
-
An Okanogan guide from the Westside? :dunno:
I am sure it is good for business, otherwise the Eastside guide wouldn't be promoting it on a radio show.
-
Not one guide man, look at most of these posts. No one is a guide and all from westside! Just saying, if we all came over there to hunt and fish it would be different
-

Yeah but why make it worse?? It will just get fished out that much sooner now, same old same old

Yea, most of the eastsiders would get skunked. Too thick over here and you can't see game 1,000 yards away.
-
Its a cave over there, 300 days of rain will do that
-
Just saying, if we all came over there to hunt and fish it would be different
You do. Eastsiders come over here all the time for fishing for our crab, bottomfish, halibut, salmon and steelhead that are not all black, soreback spawners! You are right about not coming over to hunt because it is really hard for you guys to justify busting your butts in the wetside jungles for blacktails when you can just sit at the edge of an alfalfa field and shoot tame whities. :chuckle:
-
Is this really turning into an argument about some slimy trout that were raised in a pen and will bite anything? :chuckle:

:yeah:
2 seconds of fight and they roll over and beg to be knocked on the head with a rock and hung on a stringer for hours in the hot sun. :chuckle:

M.S., when you pull them out of the water, they make their own gravy. :puke: Some of the "kings" that I have seen posted recently we wouldn't take out of the water less pose for pics with them. :chuckle:

You know how to confuse an eastsider? Use the word "chrome" in a sentence when describing a salmon or steelhead :chuckle: They'll think your talking about a truck bumper :chuckle:
-
And I thought that all their bumpers were flat black or primer. :chuckle: Hell, dark bronze is close to "chrome" right?
-
You guys are too funny! :chuckle:

You know why God created salmon and steelhead? So that people who can't catch walleye would have something to fish for

Gives the yuppies something to fish for. Leaves all the walleye and bass to the real fisherman :chuckle:
-
What about those of us who fish for them all (excluding sorebacks, chum and carp)? There are some of us who have bass boats as well as salmon/steelhead boats and gear. :chuckle:
-
question here. i've bee to rufus 2 times, whats the deal with the tribal license? where can you fish there to skip the whole tribal license deal? (shore fishing)

Not to bring this thread too much back on topic but.... :yeah:
And.....let's talk about bank fishing Rufus. How is the bank access/fishing? Especially w/o having to get another license. But. If there's good spots with a tribal license needed, I will not be stopped.

Jaysis PolarBear...I'd be happy with one boat! :chuckle:

Wrong answer. You can fish the entire Douglas County side without a tribal license, or at the middle (main) net pens on the rez side without a tribal license.

You can still fish on the rez side without a rez permit though. ;)

Never been there and never plan to go there. Proud to be a westside fisherman. Chrome is all I chase...tuna, salmon or steelhead. You all can have the green, brown, black and gold fish. :chuckle:

Ya baby! I'm glad to see the fire this thread has created. Since when do any of us have the right to claim a certain fishing hole as our own? These are pen raised mutant trout we're talking about, a renewable resource. Like someone said earlier, just the number of freak fish in the lake now would take years to fish out, especially with a 2 a day limit. I say spread the word and get those mutant vermin out of there so I(we) can catch some good eating fish like walleye. The trips arn't bad to eat if you smoke them up, much the upcoming massive run of pink salmon. How many Eastsiders will be over here slobbering and drooling over our westside bounty? Stay away all you tumble weeds, my fish! Mine all mine!
For those of you who don't know any better, that was sarcasm.
Stop being so ridiculous and bring you bucket of patience to the launch with you in the morning. Start teaching our kids how co-exsist, have fun and be true sportsman. Sure it's frustrating when our fishing holes get crowded, but chit happens. Then some place else gets hot people forget about the old spot for a while.
-
Rufus Woods is 50 miles long, no one can claim that, lol. From The State park it is a 40 mile run to get to the pens. Lots of good fishing the whole lake. I have never actually been up to the pens, yet we have had awesome times fishing within a few miles of the State Park.
In all the times I have been there, the only crowd I have encountered is two or three boats at the boat ramp.
-
Now I might have to go over and fish it.
