Title: New Elk Project I just started on, 340 archery bull (Charlies Taxidermy)
Post by: bucklucky on June 29, 2011, 08:51:12 AM
This is going to be a fun project, the biggest project I have had a chance to do for a Elk. This was a bull that was featured in Eastmans Archery Magazine a few months back. Grossed 340 , netted 330. Heck of a nice bull out of Washington.

There is actually quite a storie behind this bull and how I eventually got to be the second Taxidermist to get a shot to mount it. If by chance some of you remember that Muley that had the ears screwed to the antlers??? Well this bull came from there , and I must add, in sad , sad shape. My customer took great care of cutting the cape extra long and getting it taken care of ASAP. The other "Taxi" , "took care" of the cape and salted it down and dried it. This is where I about 5hit my pants when I saw the salted cape....... nothing was even fleshed, eyes and lips were somewhat turned. The "Taxidermist" salted right over the top of 1/2 inch thick meat and all the membrane that is supposed to be fleshed odd. Pretty sure he just dumped a ton of salt on it and called it good. Came to me Moldy , and just flat nasty. Truthfully , I did not think it would make it through the tan but we had to try, so off to the tannery it went. It ended up costing double as they had a ton of extra work to get it to rehydrate, but the tannery was able to pull off a save . It should not have made it though the tanning process.

So now everything is moving along at my shop. Cape is tanned and in the freezer. Base is built, and progress is happening. Here are some pictures to show what I have done so far with much , much more work to happen. This is going to be a closed mouth mount so a change out head will be swapped in, bull will be sitting on a Rock base with some aspen branches coming up and behind the bull.

Anyway , enjoy the pictures and I will be adding more as I get things done on the bull. This is the type of stuff I like doing, 1 off custom mounts!!

This is the main support that the rock will be built around and the driftwood is attached too.

Driftwood attached.

Next is the bracket I welded together to go into the form, I like to have plenty of area for the foam to grab onto so I screw on a few chunks of wood. It sucks when pedestal brackets break loose, especially on big mounts like this. Better safe than sorry.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi112.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn185%2Fcharliestaxidermy%2FCustom%2520Pedestal%2520Elk%2520%2520Mount%2520340%2520Archery%2520Bull%2F001jpg24.jpg&hash=e048c9f99ce0ee7edf02071472b764eab56f3524)

Now I have to hog out the back of the form, this is messy but fun!!

First I mark where I need to start hogging !

The fun Starts here!!

Test fit and adjustments are made to get the right angle and make plum !

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi112.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn185%2Fcharliestaxidermy%2FCustom%2520Pedestal%2520Elk%2520%2520Mount%2520340%2520Archery%2520Bull%2F010jpg20.jpg&hash=aca9b1251dcb3468d339165a6c403c31bd19ef89)

What came out of the form !

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi112.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn185%2Fcharliestaxidermy%2FCustom%2520Pedestal%2520Elk%2520%2520Mount%2520340%2520Archery%2520Bull%2F012jpg20.jpg&hash=f10fa76748542a0d692518c14880da2a1b1f5bda)

Next I them crewed the bracket into place and foamed it in. I also made sure to replace the small backboard so I can crew it to my mounting stand for mounting purposes. That will be cut off after it is mounted.

(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi112.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fn185%2Fcharliestaxidermy%2FCustom%2520Pedestal%2520Elk%2520%2520Mount%2520340%2520Archery%2520Bull%2F014jpg20.jpg&hash=9fdcb29959d786d87ac2a901b9d8ac9e4dcc3719)

The horns were somewhat set so I can see what we have. Now I can cut the head off and put the closed mouth head on. I waited to do this till after the form was on the base so I can be sure to make it straight and level. Here are some pictures of how it is mocked up. I'm done for now!

Oh and check out the flow of the wood to the pedestal back on the form, don't get much better than that!!

Sometimes I wonder why taxidermy costs so much. This definitely sheds some light on the issue.

Looks like fun Charlie.  Let us know what you think about the form.  Ive got a couple of 380 sets I need to do.  Ive just been up in the air on which forms to use.  I think I defiantly want to try Aaron's pedestal though.  I just don't care for the legs being so pronounced and chopped off, but that can be fixed.

His form is the best sculpted form I have seen. Everything is so accurate its not funny. I actually have a picture that I seen in Feild and stream, I found out who the photographer was and bought a print just to compare. Its is extremely close  when comparing to the picture. Personally I like the legs on it , it gives the form action. The right leg is forward and the left is moving back a little. This is the form I bought to mount my 370 bull on but wanted to test it before I mounted mine  :chuckle:

Thanks guys, but its the sculpter of that form that should be getting all the credit right now, he does some amazing work. I just need to dso my part when I get done mounting it so I dont make his form look bad  :chuckle: I took pictures with my rack on it also jst to make sure I was going to like that form on my bull

One of the cool things about a pedestal mount is that it is literally a 360 degree mount, technically you can put it out in the middle of the room and see it from every angle. Let me tell ya, It definately makes me go back to the hunt , remembering the things he was doing when I was watching him, seeing him from the back walking away, I dont know its just cool. Now Im gettimg amped to mount my bull, probably going to try and get it done for the taxidermy competition in January in Pasco.

Charlie, just wondering; why closed-mouth?  I assume the client wanted it that way, but can this form not be ordered closed mouth without you having to modify it?
Title: Re: New Elk Project I just started on, 340 archery bull (Charlies Taxidermy)
Post by: bucklucky on July 01, 2011, 08:56:49 AM
That form comes with the bugling mouth but can be ordered without the mouthcup so you can close the mouth wich is what Im gona do. They sell a change out head without the mouth cup so I will go that route. Customer did not want a bugling mount, more of a head up sniffing type mount.

ANd then to the cape prep, I did not take any pictures as I had my hands full with the Prior Taxidermists (straight arrow Taxidermy)  hack job of a capping job. I figured the dude could at least cape an animal correctly ...... boy was I wrong . Holes everywhere, ears were not turned the ;last inch and a half to 2 inches, tear ducts cut out, nasal wings cut out ..... juat crap but I worked through it . So now its mounted and drying. Now off to the next big projects ...... 2 bobcats and a lifesize couger with a few deer heads thrown in before I get to the september elk mounts  ANd no Im not skipping anyone  :chuckle: Now ajustments for the next couplew of days to get everything just right.
