Title: Huckleberry Hog
Post by: daydreamn on June 30, 2011, 10:19:30 PM
Here you go buck man.  Your right, 121 produces some impressive deer.  This buck grosses 194" and nets 185".   12" eyeguards make him a unique buck.  As good as he is, I have seen a few others running around that unit that make him look small.  Maybe this fall Ill chase a few of them around with you?

Not sure who came up with 121 not having any big deer.  I think it currently holds the next world record. Thats a sweet deer.

 :yeah:

There are some absolute giants in 121.  I personally was very happy to see the 4-point minimum restriction put in place.  When I started hunting that unit about 15 years ago it was 3 point minimum and we always saw a lot of bucks, and a lot of big bucks.  When it went to any buck, pretty much anything with any visible antler was getting whacked during modern season.  The number of quality deer we were seeing dropped dramatically over the next several years.

That said, the smart deer survived none the less and like I said there are some giants up there.  Great pic daydream, those eye guards are incredible!

I started the rumor about no bucks being left in 121.  I was planning on hunting there next year.  You see, Bfoots from the Blues that have run out of food (no more elk to eat) and are migrating north....

Nice buck Daydream...too bad he was the last one in there...

Nice!!! Here is another Huck Hog from a couple years ago. Still seeing good bucks . If you listened to all the 4 point advocates, you would think big bucks were extinct. I am in the field 12 months a year in the Huckleberry unit and there are plenty of big bucks that escape to breed.

I'm missing out on not hunting huckleberry :bash:

But last time I went there for modern rifle, it was like a zoo of hunters though :yike:

Don't worry, I hunt next door to huckleberry and there is not much of a zoo of hunters there. ;)

Technicality, but good catch.  The southeastern corner of 121 used to be 117.  That little triangle between Loon Lake, Springdale, and Chewelah used to be 117 but is now 121.  Since the point restrictions apply to both 121 and 117 though we're really talking about the same thing.

There are hogs in 121 and 117.  Again, great buck daydream!

I tell you what killed this unit was when they went to the controlled hunts in Spokane county, a big chunk of folks that do not draw a late season tag In Spokane and the Palouse area head to 121.  I used to hunt the late season and NEVER see another hunter out in the field.  Always killed a nice buck in the late season.  The year they went to the draw, holy smokes it was amazing.  I parked my truck one more on a little piece of state land that I always hunted and I'm not exaggerating I had to wait to cross the little logging trail while 14 rigs drove by.   :yike:

awesome buck!! Some character... alot of the NE units have great deer..but 101 to me is the best for massive, freak bucks... there is nowhere in my 25 years of chasing whiteatails here where anywhere you dump salt hang a cam come back in 2 weeks and you have BIG bucks on cam. I spend the whole summer in 127,124,121 to find just a few bucks and yet most of the time non compare in mass to these 101 bucks

I wish I could hunt it like I want to.. but I cant effectively scout the area as its a 3 hr drive and the cost of gas these days its too much..so I stay closer to home.

3 spots no more than 4 miles apart last year..just some of the bigger ones

Here's a 121 buck I shot when I was 15 on my Grandpa's farm. I've hunted 121 for 36 years. I'm from Bluecreek N. of Chewelah. Back in the 70's and 80's all you  could see was headlights on 395 the night before season opened. Now a days not too many, it doesn't get hunted as hard today as it use to. It has a 4 point now because the road hunters and the guys who don't want to really hunt don't see the big boys, the big boys don't get big for being dumb.

Great buck PA BEN.  I rember seeing that set on here somewhere before.  As far as the score 155 nt., I think you might want to think about having it scored again.  I guarantee he scores better than that.  Those guys at the bighorn show have been known to make a few mistakes with there scores.
