Title: Blacktail buck
Post by: bobcat on July 01, 2011, 11:55:01 PM
Got a decent buck with a camera I just set up 6 days ago. It doesn't usually happen this way, but these pictures were on the same day I put up the camera. This is the best buck I've seen so far out of six cameras I've got out. I'm just surprised it came by just hours after I was there- not sure if my scent would have dissipated by then or not. But he hung around long enough for a few pictures, so apparently he did not sense anything out of the ordinary. (no bait out here either, just a well used deer trail)

Here are the same pictures cropped. He's definitely no Boone & Crockett buck, but still the best I've seen so far.

He is gonna be a nice buck for sure. Hopefully you can catch him during the season!

This is from a different camera about 1/4 mile away:

I think that first one is going to be a shooter.

Well he's big enough for me, unless I find a better one before the season starts. I'm not sure how much more he will grow? But he's looking like he's a 3x2 right now. I think I'm going to be moving some cameras around now, and try to focus more on this particular area. Also got a salt block today to put out, and I also got some of that apple flavored "buck jam".

Even as a 3x2, he's a nice blacktail. Probably 19" wide. I'd be happy with him.

He's a great buck!

Probably won't grow much more in the frame.  From what I've picked up on, they usually grow 90% of their frame first, then put on mass as the antlers harden before stripping the velvet.

What kind of battery life are you getting out of those Tascos?  Not a bad camera for daytime photos, which won't hurt you if you set them up in areas for daytime activity like you say.

I don't really know what battery life is because I have never let the batteries run down till they were dead. But just last week I got a new battery tester that works really well, and brought it with me when I checked the cameras on Friday. It showed the batteries were at 60%. It had been out there for 4 weeks, so I'm thinking I will get 8 weeks out of the batteries, or maybe even a little more. I'll probably change them out before they're totally dead, and that's why I really like having that battery tester. Without it I would probably just change the batteries after 4 weeks, because I don't want the camera to sit out there for a week or two not taking any pictures.

This is the battery tester I bought if anyone is interested:  http://cgi.ebay.com/ZTS-MINI-MULTI-BATTERY-TESTER-MBT-w-PULSE-LOAD-CASE-/360376819080?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D350471313859%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D1089622901954283637 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ZTS-MINI-MULTI-BATTERY-TESTER-MBT-w-PULSE-LOAD-CASE-/360376819080?_trksid=p4340.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D350471313859%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D1089622901954283637)

It's only $17 and shipping is free. It was about $30 on Amazon, so the ebay price is a really good deal.

Oh, and I'm using Rayovac batteries from Wal Mart. They're only $1 each (6 pack for $5.97). The camera takes 4 "D" batteries, so it's $4 to run the camera for 2 months, or $2/month.
