Title: Hunting from a bike
Post by: kglacken on July 04, 2011, 12:47:55 PM
I am planning on hunting from my mountain bike this year for early archery deer and modern season also! (multi season deer tag). So my question is, what do you guys use to hold your bow/rifle to the bike? Or do you guys that bike just sling it over your back? Post pictures if you have them too! I want an efficient way to carry my weapon without having it on my back if possible  :chuckle:

You can make a bike gun rack.  I used to use scrap pieces of metal.  Form them into a 'U' shape and mount above the handlebars.  That way you can get the gun off while in the process of stopping.  If you use a sling, then you have to stop and nearly get off the bike...a lot of movement.  The one I made was similar to the ones on ATVs---except nothing matched, wrapped in duct tape and pipe insulation--so it wouldn't shock the gun or scratch it, and then spray painted.

I was thinking about making one too. Our family owns a metal fabrication company and I wanted to get some ideas to see how I could build one for no cost  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Here is my set up from the "Green Mountain" archery hunt. I strapped my bow to the pack using the existing straps. There are also packs made for strapping guns and bows to the pack.

I have not seen a bike bow holder that I'd use. Get a good backpack that carries a gun and bow. Make sure the fit is correct, because having a backpack slide back and forth when your chugging up a hill sucks.

I bought an ATV bow rack, and am gonna try and mount em to the bars. Might work. Might be a waste of $30.  :guns:

I use an ATV gun rack also.  Works good and is nice and secure on gravel roads.  I dont do any trail riding so not sure how they would work for that.

I use the Eberlestock pack. It has a quick release so you can get your bow or gun out fast and its pretty big so you can store just about everything you will need for a day or 2 day trip.

I like the ATV gun clamp idea. I'm gonna try that. Is there a particular brand and/or model, Kain?

This is what I use.  it holds rifles and muzzle loaders just fine.  you have to get used to it to  get the gun out quickly and easily though.

Hey Wapiti, did you fabricate that or is that commercially available?

Hey there,

What bike trailer is that and how much weight have you hauled with it? It looks like a nice setup.

Thanks,

Brian

I was going to ask the same....looks like the same trailer I'm using, a collapsable double kiddy caboose jobber. I like the low connection, as opposed to the seat post attachment. Kain, did you modify your trailer?

If you use a gun rack for your bow make sure your sting dosent rub on anything. I had a buddy ruin his string before his hunt began from the vibration.

No mods just a regular double kid trailer.  Its rated at 100lbs.  I think there is about 75 in the picture above.  It worked great but I have not got to use it in over a year.

I cant find the rack I have but it is very similar to this one.

My dad was having trouble getting his bow to fit without rubbing on something so he had to install some handle bar ends similar to these.

Kain, thanks for the links. Those Hawkeye trailers are the cat's A$$! The stats they posted are impressive (strong and light weight).  I may try to build something similar.
