Title: Looking at a 45 acp
Post by: elkinrutdrivemenuts on July 07, 2011, 12:23:13 PM: I am interested in getting a 45, currently lookin at a sw 4506 or a beretta px4 storm. Both full size. I like larger calibers, but the wife wand to enjoy shooting it as well an didn't like my 44 mag. Does the 45 kick as bad or should I look at a 40 to keep her happy? It's gonna be a defense, pack while scouting/camping gun but no concealed carry or hunting. Although I am looking at a compact xd 40 as a back up. Thoughts?

Post by: wildmanoutdoors on July 07, 2011, 12:29:07 PM: You wont be able to tell the diff from a 45 or a 40 probably. She will like either if you keep your loads down to say 800 FPS. My HK USP 40 kicks about the same as my 45's.

Hand her either with some federal Hydro's and she probably wont like either.

Post by: oneezreiter on July 07, 2011, 12:43:00 PM: You maay want to take a look at the Sig p250. it is a modular design that can go from a fullsize frame to a subcompact. I have one and like it, good trigger fairly light, can be converted from a full size .45 to a subcompac .357 sig, 9mm .40, or .45 for about $250.

Post by: FC on July 07, 2011, 12:48:16 PM: Make sure whatever you get fits your wife's hands well and it won't seem so bad to her. FWIW .40 has more muzzle flip IMO than the 45acp. I've had mine shooting my tokarev of all things, I thought it might have too much flip or be too loud for her but it fits her hands well and she seems to like it. :dunno:

It is a frickin brick though, huuuuuge gun. Has your wife handled one in person? I have big mitts and it's a serious handful. I'd be leary of that thing if you're buying it for a lady to shoot unless she has huge man hands.

I didn't do my homework or testfire any other models to see what fit best. It hardly has a kick to it and is a great gun but accuracy past 10 yards is not very good. I can't remember off the top of my head what pistol my dad has but he is accurate out to 100 yards with it. I need to ask him what kind it is so that I can look into possibly buying one.

I know, I think I'm leaning towards the beretta, it's lighter and a little smaller. It's gonna be a carry gun while out in the woods, so if it's smaller and lighter than the raging bull I had I'll be happy.

Personally I'd think or say that if your wife is the one that is going to use it, you ought to see what she fits.
Both of them are big framed guns. The 4506 makes my Glock 22 feel little but a lot of folks complain about the size of the grips on the G22 being too big.

It solves almost all of the caliber issues, you can get different calibers and frame sizes as well as frame width, it takes a matter of seconds to switch from one to the other. Get the full size .45 for yourself and the 9mm for her, carry the .45 in the woods and such, transfer to a fell size 9mm for her to plink with, get the comact .40 to carry concealed.

I really like mine, it is double action only, but for an inexpensive gun it is smooth, and comfortable to shoot and carry, and there are so many options.

After some wrist damage I needed replace my 10mm because my wrists would start to hurt after 20 rounds. I played with the 9mm and 40, but the 45 was the most pleasant to shoot. I can go 100+ rounds without any discomfort. the smaller calibers have too much snap, and that's what got me in trouble in the first place.

Post by: 7mag. on July 07, 2011, 10:29:35 PM: If you are going to buy a .45, buy a 1911, they are the best designed handgun ever made. There are tons of manufacturers that make a 1911, so you should be able to find one in your budget. Try Springfield Armory, they have some more inexpensive 1911's.

Post by: JLS on July 07, 2011, 10:42:12 PM: The 45 is much nicer to shoot than a 40, and no comparison to a 44. Not a fan of Smith autos, but if you like it buy it. Sig 220s are very nice, and Glocks are just simply shooters.

You can now get the Glock 21 Short Frame to accomodate smaller hands.

Post by: superdown on July 08, 2011, 08:28:02 AM: 1 more vote for the 1911 i have been shooting my kimber eclipse custom II in 45acp for 5 years without so much as a single jam misfire stove pipe or any other malfunction. I cant remember which other member posted pics a short while ago of targets at fifty yards from a kimber with the shots inside a pie plate and i easily get the same accuracy out of my pistol so it's not an accident .

Someone also stated that a 1911 is round limited??? what does that mean?
A very good and inexpensive gun that shoots nicely, carries well and is really inexpensive is a Star arms firestar they can be found in .9mm, .40, .45 , i know it's not a kimber, sig, glock etc but it for me is an often overlooked backpack gun that wont set you back alot of $$$

The EAA Witness is a knock off of the CZ. Very high reviews and cost about 3/4 of the CZ.
