Title: Antler Growth after Sept 1
Post by: leed on July 07, 2011, 12:32:07 PM
Percentage wise, how much antler growth has occured by Sept 1 and will occur after Sept 1?  My serious scouting where I will start trying to figure out what buck or area to concentrate on will start around Sept 1.  Maybe it varies from area to area?  I'm guessing 80% by Sept. Any ideas?

Antlers are done growing by September.

A healthy wild buck with intact berries should be done with antler growth by September.

From what I've seen most are done growing by early to mid August and velvet is shed within a couple weeks of that....

There are some bucks that have shed velvet by 1st of September, I think middle of August it's done growing, its just when they rub

I would say they are 99% done by early to mid August but they don't necessarily shed velvet right away.

As far as growth goes, zero in my opinion.  Some will still be hardening, but done with growth.

Check this video out I took last year August 15th it shows that the velvet has already been sheded and that the antler growth has long been over.

ELK are done with growth by the end of July and begining to shed.. Deer are pretty much done in early August as the hardening process begins..I have seen alot of deer out of velvet by mid August.. antlers dont just harden overnight

No antler growth after mid/late August.  I know everyone else is saying the same thing, but I like the way my club sounds when it's beating the dead horse better than everyone else's.... :beatdeadhorse:

No velvet, no growth.  Bone is dead after the velvet is shed.  Time to fight!!!!

I saw a few bucks scouting a few days ago that are done..be surprised if there was 2" added by the time they shed..pretty easy to tell when looking at animals in velvet. Tines that go to points and beams that are fully wrapped around = done

I'm going to disagree with everyone on here.  I'm also going to argue my case using facts and statistics using datat that I just now made up.

A study done by Harvard Law foudn that deer antler growth is only 78.67852% complete by September 1st.  Further more almost 92.74532% of bucks still have velvet through the 13th of September.  The actual day that bucks antlers stop growing all over the US is exactly Sept 15th.  The Native Americans used to celebrate this day in a festival known as "Day of the Hardening"  NOTE *Historians have conflicting views on what this day really meant*  For the next two weeks the antlers begin a process of bone hardening.  On October 1st the bucks begin the peeling process.  The deer accomplish the peeling process like this.  In every drainage there is a tree known to the deer as the "Rubbing Tree"  all the buck will gather around and take turns rubbing their velvet off.  A study done by the University of Delaware found that the biggest bucks started first followed by the smaller bucks.  This process usually takes exactly 14 days.  Therefore the peeling process will be complete by October 14th.  Oxford University found that in the United States on October 14th EXACTLY 99.3245% of bucks have finished peeling their velvet.  Which if you guys must know is the exact reason why Rifle Season in Washington starts on October 15th.  The WDFW wants all the rifle hunters to be able to shoot hard horned bucks.

So you see the WDFW isn't as dumb as you all think.  There now you know how the growing and peeling process is done and why rifle season starts October 15th.  Now go ahead try and shoot some holes in that process and explination I DARE YOU!!  You can't it is bullet proof and completely sound.  So what if I used made up stats and facts.  Their still facts.   :chuckle:

awww...Bless your heart.  You didn't know this was a joke... :hello:

Better not read any other threads that you see Colockumelk (or me for that matter) chime in on.  He'll have you setting Bfoot traps around your camp (and have the "factual" evidence to back it up too... :chuckle: :chuckle: )

I have to agree with everyone about growth.
...
But...
I shot a 3X3 with eyeguards in the Apline Lakes (spectacle lake, paddy-go-easy Pass) on Sept 20th once (High Country Buck Season) That was still in velvet.
But that was "Back in the Old Days" (mid '80's), so things were different......

Yep you reminded me of another study I recently read which was published by the New York Times.  Back in the mid-80's there was not such thing as Global Warming.  Once global warming took effect it completely changed the dynamics of antler growth.  Now that global warming is gone and we have Climate Change.....  whew now things are really out of whack.  Just my  :twocents:

Looked over 50 or so bucks this weekend, and they are at all stages of developement from ones that are starting to harden (interesting enough some are starting to shed out of their reds as well) and the biggest buck of them all, still a long ways to go in growth,  turned the corner at over 30 inches and just forking with big BIG round knobs.

This does not support any of the research I have seen.  Bone your going to have to give me grid coordinates to this location so that I can do some research on my own.   8)
