I've been searching all over for photos/stories of past years governors tag bulls in WA, all I can find is the 2008 monster. I'm not the most internet savvy person in the world but I searched on this site and couldn't find anything either :dunno: Can anybody shed some light on this subject? How 'bout we start with this: does anybody have pics of the 2010 Gov tag bull??
-
.
-
Dan Agnew? The pic was on here a while back. I think he shot the last bull in the Blues.
-
You could also try researching his name.
-
The bull there that Miles posted is Mr. Agnew's '10 bull. The 2009 auction tag was sold to a guy in Oregon. I don't think we ever saw pics of that one. The 451 bull was Mr. Agnew's 2008 bull.

you saw that bull in person at like 30 yards... didn't you take a picture? or were you drooling over the spike that was out of range.

2008 bull

Dan has more 400+ inch bulls then anyone that I know.

Yeah may be but to me they count less than a 3 point rag horn someone shot off public land during general season. Just my :twocents:
Now if he got drawn in the lottery that would be a different story, not trying to take anything away from someones trophy they killed off public land in a permit hunt. Just saying that someone who purchases a gov tag that can hunt anywhere in the state that is open to elk during any season open (that is my understanding of how the gov tag works) then pays additional $ to have a group of guys scout him a bull and then bring him to that bull then probably even call that bull in for him then I'm sure pack it out for him...well that just doesnt mean much to me. I'll take the doe BT I killed during late archery over that any day, and that is no joke.
That being said, I'm thankful to him for the $ that he paid that goes to the state and hope it is managed well

All I will say is their was alot of talk about this bull ... I guess thank god for someone who has that kinda money to give to the state of Washington to take one of that caliper... Just to bad the money did not go right into the elk Rehab fund !!!!

All and their is someone in skagit co. who has killed a few 400 class bulls too but then again he has more money than he can spend too ... Damn wish I could hit the lotto .... :chuckle: :chuckle:

How rich is this guy anyhow ?
I just googled him. Now I know why he can do that. Why is something like this always for rich people is my question ? Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeze !

I guess the biggest question is if those guys that helped him were guides or what ... I am sure they made out good too !!

I bet there are some natives that have really killed some dandies!! :chuckle:

So you're putting the guy down for spending big money and buying his elk essentially in one paragraph then thanking him for spending the money in the next paragraph??
I don't get it.
We could always eliminate these auction tags and the money that goes directly to wildlife management in our state, but then we'd probably have to raise our license fees....but then that money would go to the general fund...hmmm...I think I'll thank Mr. Agnew for the money he spends that goes back to the wildlife of our state and a few other states he puts money back to every year.
-
I think most of us understand what he is trying to say Jackelope, we understand the whole concept of the raffle tags and where the money goes-we hope anyway. I didn't take it as him putting down Mr Agnews actions, but it isn't quite the feat that most of us do everyear just trying to get a legal animal. Not a roast just a point, and I agree with him.
-
DO YOU DIRECTLY SEE THIS MONEY GOING TO WILDLIFE MANGEMENT..they can tell us that crap all we want but does anyone see what its specifically used for and where? I highly doubt it! probably goes to the state
-
Alright, let's get back to the post....
we got a couple tags in camp this year and we'll be trying to beat the gov tag to a couple bulls.
Not sure who bought the tag this year but I heard that he'll be near us. You better get in shape mr Mykiss, and make sure you pick up a couple more half gallons of Pendleton :chuckle:
-
Watch out for road blocks.
:chuckle:
-
I have forest service enforcement and the local game warden's numbers programmed into my phone, I about half hope he tries that garbage. I would take great pleasure in calling that in. :bash:

:yeah:
Thats exactly what I was saying. And you're probably correct I should have thanked him in the first paragraph and then expressed my thoughts on why his 400" elk don't mean as much as the guy who consistently shoots 220" bulls off of public grounds during any general season. I hope the $ is going to wildlife management like its supposed to and for that I really thank him.
Also I'm NOT assuming that the gov tags are the only hunts he goes on every year, I just respect a 200" brush bull he might have shot off public ground, found himself, packed out, etc more than a 400" bull that he has bought.

:chuckle:
if a tree falls on a truck and nobody's around does it make a noise? :chuckle:
I hope no BS goes on up there this year. I'm tired of the guys that try to run you off the road and never wave.
-
2nd Amendment in "The Blues".....if they try running you off the road.
-
Yeah, buying all your bulls must be pretty hard work.
-
Just my two cents on Mr. Agnew: I've never met him, but I wonder how big of an ego he has. I don't consider what he does hunting and I'm much more impressed with someone who went out on his own and actually worked to harvest a bull.

I think if he had more of an ego we'd have heard about it by now. You don't see photos of him with his bulls all over the news, or here bragging on this board, or to my knowledge, even in hunting journals.
I've admittedly been a bit critical of him and other rich hunters in that it doesn't seem like fair chase to spend $$$$$$ on X guides who scout the mess out of the mountains, and then take at them in the easiest hunting period of the year with a high powered, scoped rifle. He has yet to impress upon me his prowess as hunter.
However, as other people pointed out, its far better for him to spend his money supporting hunting than opposing it.

Agnew has some monster Arizona bulls also, I think the year he took the 450 bull here, he shot a 400+ typical in Arizona. His trophy room must be huge!
-
Id sure like to see that trophy room . I have seen a few of his bulls like the san carlos 6x6 with the 66 inch beam in person but I think it was a reproduction for the San Carlos Booth.
-
Dan Agnew buys the Governer's tag every year. Each year he has purchased it the price was right around $60-65,000 give or take. He also is given the name of a "guide" in the Blue's who knows where the 400" bulls are and immediately calls that guy. This guy charges Dan about $40,000 to take him out 1 time before the season and show him the bull and give him 2 "callers/packers" to help with the hunt. So, if you want this Gov. tag, you better have a deep pocket book.
-
He does not buy it every year.

Need some of them Dukes of Hazzard signs..The Dukes of Columbia County! I think we should go down and get the Welcome to Washington Signs and put them down on the Snake..Them Utah boys will think they are in Oregon! :)

He didn't buy it in '09 and he didn't buy it this year.
In 2008 Mr. Agnew bought it for $65k. In 2009 the guy from Oregon bought it for $44k.
I can't find the $$ amount for the 2010 permit or the 2011 one.
-
If I had the cash I would buy the tag in a heart beat. The only thing I didnt like about him is that he paid people in Dayton to watch his bull for him. Do the work yourself, that makes the reward more enjoyable. Hell maybe Ill run for governor and quit selling the tag off to the highest bidder and use it for myself! ; )

Each one of the callers and packers must drive like 3 pick-ups then... maybe 4 cause the year he killed the 440's bull that's how many were parked above it.

You got that right Yelp. 09' wasn't even Dan..... The bull the feller killed that year was perty steller, the gentleman kept it perty hush hush. Great bull though..

I heard the same thing, but I also heard rumor that a local would be the guide. I'm sure I'll know by the end of august.
It's kind of a bummer that two guys in our camp will most likely have to compete with a group of guys packing a rifle in September. Oh well, don't need 400+ bulls to be an awesome hunt. It'll be fun no matter what.
Charlie, I'll be up there a lot in september get ahold of me. Might need your caping skills :)
-
Josh told me it was a guy from E. Oregon. The only pics he had were live still footage, if I remember it was around 420+. Its amazing the info that can be shared with a 1/2 gallon of Pendleton involved....
Jake, the pard and I will be spending some weekends down there too, starting later in the month, as he has that tag. see ya down there.
-
It does not matter because anyone paying that kinda money to kill something is way beyond me ....... Heck a monster bull moose hunt with Jim Shocky does not cost that much .......here is 65 gs bang and thank you ... sounds exciting to me ...
-
If I had the money I'd probably do the same thing that Dan Agnew and the others do :twocents:
-
I wish I was Dans Sherpa :chuckle:
-
Not hunting just a cash exchange!!! :whoo:
-
Remember guys, theWDFW raffle draw tag for elk (west and east) allows you the same hunt (any weapon in any open unit) for a $6 chance! I know the guy who drew the westside elk tag five years ago or so, took a nice 6x6 in the margaret backcountry with a rifle in September. passed on a 7x7 in toledo earlier.

Interesting thread ;)
Though all I got out of it that was interesting is I NEED DIRECTIONS TO BLUES CABIN! :dunno:

If I had the money I'd probably do the same thing that Dan Agnew and the others do :twocents:
not me... I would buy the best dang wall tent money could buy and find an area which holds good bulls , get a good sleeping bag and stay their the whole season until I FOUND THE BULL I WAS AFTER .... just gone huntin ... and I really do respect everyones opinion on there way of hunting ...

I really care less how much you wanna spend on a tag. Or what it gives you, I put in for draws and raffles as well in the hopes of one day getting a "dream" hunt.
I also understand that it is a revenue generator for the state and MAY benefit those specific species.
I guess what gets under my skin a bit, is that these tags have a conservation label attached to them. I would rather they just call it what it is, a rich guy buying his way to a state record or near state record. Really if Agnew was concerned with conservation, I KNOW he could put his money to better use than giving it to the WDFW to do as they see fit. And then dropping god knows amount on guides, private access etc... .
Im sure the money could be put to better use, and he could still go on a killer hunt anywhere and kill a great bull.
My prediction is he will soon hold the state record for cascade roosevelt as well. Why do you think the high lakes in margarete are locked down?
In the end to each his own, on how they want to hunt, and how much money they spend. Just dont hide behind the skirts of conservation to try to disguise the truth.
I would hope that if the day were to come when I had that much money to blow, I would not cheapen the life of a majestic animal by killing him instead of hunting him. And would look at ways to improve the lives of the animals I hunt, my fellow hunters, and my kids as well.

When did Todd Reichert stop getting the WA Governor's tag? I know in 2008 he bought the New Mexico Governor's tag and got a monster 440. I have been in his trophy room and it will make you pee your pants!
-
Corks? Caping? I'm confused. I wouldn't want you to invite a bunch of guys up there to help me pack out a 241" bull...

I would like to think so, isn't that his neck of the woods or did he leave? :dunno:

I don't know who Mr. Reichert is but maybe he decided to take his money to another state and support elk management there instead of here in Washington where there are a number of hunters who just want to slam a guy for "buying" an elk. :dunno:

This is not the only state in the west that hunters slam the auction permit guys FYI. Spend a little time over on Monstermuleys.com and you'll see what I mean.
-
I know. I was basically being a smart ass. Everyone has an opinion and feels differently. I personally think it is okay to oppose the auction tags (I don't) but some of the comments get really personal and attack the guy when they know very little about him, his professional life, time demands, ethics, etc.
-
We seem to agree on this topic.

X2. It's not the same as spending 10 days in the back country but some of the stuff people say about the guy is pretty sad. I don't care that people are opposing the auction tags but people need to stop ripping into the guy for buying them. It's his money he can spend it however he wants.

I can't find the $$ amount for the 2010 permit or the 2011 one.
True...But, i heard a local guy from here in walla walla bought it in 09. This year i heard that somebody from Team Mossback bought the tag. But thats just my :twocents:
I heard the same thing, but I also heard rumor that a local would be the guide. I'm sure I'll know by the end of august.
It's kind of a bummer that two guys in our camp will most likely have to compete with a group of guys packing a rifle in September. Oh well, don't need 400+ bulls to be an awesome hunt. It'll be fun no matter what.
Charlie, I'll be up there a lot in september get ahold of me. Might need your caping skills :)
A guide or landowner ;)

I know. I was basically being a smart ass. Everyone has an opinion and feels differently. I personally think it is okay to oppose the auction tags (I don't) but some of the comments get really personal and attack the guy when they know very little about him, his professional life, time demands, ethics, etc.
X2. It's not the same as spending 10 days in the back country but some of the stuff people say about the guy is pretty sad. I don't care that people are opposing the auction tags but people need to stop ripping into the guy for buying them. It's his money he can spend it however he wants.
:yeah: x3
