Does anyone out there hunt Ft. Lewis? I did a quick search and saw that the latest posts regarding Lewis were back in 2007/08. I was just wondering if it is even worth my time and what areas I should start to scout? I am a bow hunter. Any info y'all can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
-
First thing you want to do is go to the adventure center on north fort and get signed up, then head over to range control and get a vehicle pass. You'll need the vehicle pass during scouting trips. You will eventually be stopped by range control or state police while out on training areas and it pays to be squared away. I've been stopped three times in the last two months by staters. Sometimes I think they get mad when they can't give me a ticket. But they're just doing their job, theres a lot of people running around fort Lewis property that shouldn't be. I suggest getting a map at the adventure center looking at areas that interest you and then research those areas on google earth, then go out and scout. There are deer to be found out there.
-
Shoot me a pm if you have any other questions.
-
Thanks! Will do and thanks for the info, that is a step in the right direction!
-
Um don't you have to get your visitors pass then go to the adventure center?
-
Once you are registered with the Adventure Center, they will give you a vehicle pass to access JBLM.
There are some nice deer on JBLM but they are not easy to find, hell even the doe's are hard to find :bash: I only seen 2 deer all last season on the base and that is including duck hunting :bash:
I think the deer are getting less and less every year. Why, I don't know, but I do not see as many deer as I used to, and I have been hunting the base on and off for 15 years, Archery and MF.
I think they are doing more and more field work and it pushes the deer away or the guys are out there have a "Bambie BBQ" :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
As for technique, get out of the rig, and slowly walk old unused roads, and the thicker cover. Keep your eyes open and use your bino's.
Scouting is a great idea, but it is more to know the area and terrain then to spot deer. If you do spot and or pattern some deer, all it takes is a week of field maneuvers to blow themout of the area :bash:
There are many guys that scout, set up trail cameras, and tree stands so you will not be the only one out there. Once you get out hunting the area, you will start to see the same people hunting the same area and get to know there vehicle and possibly them, if you are friendly enough to stop and talk with other.
Make sure you got your bear and cougar tag with you ;)
-
During non-hunting seasons you need a vehicle use permit from range control. During hunting season the pass you get from the NAC is all you need.

There is an option on the call in that allows you access to the base but must not carry a weapon. I used it for shed hunting this winter and spring. Just have to go through the all the options on teh phone list. ;)
-
Ya, that's what I though too. And I even explained it that way on two different occasions to state police but they informed me I had to have the range control pass if it wasn't hunting season. Kinda weird, I know....find any sheds?

NOT A ONE :bash:
But I believe Yoterhunter found 1 or 2 :dunno:
Where were you when you were stopped by a stater, I have only been stopped once, by a gamie and that was about 5 years ago. Got stopped by the MP's once, but I was registered in an area that they were having field maneuvers :bash:
Got a call on my cell from the Adv. Center last year to get out of an area that they were doing maneuvers in that they registered me in :bash: The missile simulator's were loud :chuckle:
-
I dont know what it is about the fort, I hunted there lst late archery season and saw sign every where, monster rubs tracks etc. I hunted my a** off and didnt see one deer on 6 different trips, and i hunted hard!
-
thats becouse i have most of them on my walls..the biggest problem is all the manovers these deer will lay 10 ft from you if you dont see them you will walk past them .
-
The nisqaully's are hunting it now, even around the firing range.
-
Quite a few bear actually!

oups, sorry Dale, There are no deer on JBLM :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
dont waste your time on post. seek game else where because i tried last year and did not even see a single deer. hunting season is short so use it wisely. :)
-
Yep. No deer on the fort.
-
I have seen deer on North Fort on several occassions in the past few weeks . . . But if Ft. Lewis is a waste of my time then does anyone have any suggestions on where I should start? I just moved to the area so any info would be greatly appreciated!
-
To bad you can't hunt in Dupont. There is some wall hangers running around the area. You will see them during the rut but they hide out the rest of the year.
-
I know, I already saw a beast tearing up the bushes near my house a few times. I see deer around Dupont going to work in the AM and coming home in the PM almost everyday.
-
Yeah I work at the SF building and we have some studs all over the property. I posted a pick of a 140 class deer on here awhile back. Search Dupont blacktail.
-
I've had luck in an area that used to be called Area 12. It's basically on Ft. Lewis side not far from the cross base road at the end of the McChord runway. There are some old apple trees and several oak trees that drop nuts which definitely attract them and I've seen deer in there several times along with some large bucks. Never got a big buck, but a couple does and a bear. The scotch broom in there sucks!
-
Wake1 - Did a search and nothing came up.
-
Olympic - I will have to take a look in that area. I think I know where you are talking about.
-
Area 12 is closed to ALL hunting due to the mock city out there. Which makes me madder than a wal mart worker on the 1st and 15th. That area has some critters in it. Ive seen deer, bear, bobcat and yotes all the time. Chambers lake was one of my most productive duck spots in the whole state! Now its closed to ALL hunting. Ive hunted that area my whole life :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Yeah, we found some awsome areas to duck hunt in area 12, but can't :ACRY:
-
Well, there goes that idea!! Ha!
-
But we did find many other places to hunt ducks, why do you think I made a layout duck boat
-
Hey BURTONRIDER... I've hunted the fort my whole life. If you wanna know whats going on out there then PM me. Not giving up honey holes but i can help you get started.

-
I can't see the pics! :(
-
like i told you gasman there is no deer on the fort . i shot them all. :IBCOOL:
-
I was driving home this morning and saw a high 4 pt. and a doe eating together on North Fort. First buck I have seen on post, mostly see does all over the place.
-
what season are you hunting for deer?
-
Been hunting on JBLM for a few years. I've stepped on a few giving me no shot. Went scouting this weekend and saw a nice buck and a few does. I'll be back at it this year with my ML. Hopefully the TA's I want to hunt will be open during the ML season.
-
thats one thing about the base. you never know what unit will be open.
-
I may be wrong on this but isn't the GMU for the post closed in late ML
-
I may be wrong on this but isn't the GMU for the post closed in late ML
JBLM is in both 652 and 666.
652 and 666 are both open for early ML.
666 is open during late ML
-
Yes main post is GMU 652 and it's closed for the late ML but the south Rainier TA's are in GMU 666 which is open for late ML.

Area 12 is off eastgate road (wont be open) Area 4 is good but alot of activity.10,8,9,16,3 Are all good areas 3 runs along I-5 and holds alot of deer.Like said before they wont move till you step on them.We us treestands and tag good bucks every year.Ive hunted it for 30 years Ive never seen a cougar or know anyone who has or even a track.Lots of bears on area 10,9,8,18 and a small herd of elk on 23 into 20.Ive seen 1 warden in 30 years who was watching cops pull a body off area 11. The fort is not even close to what it was 10 years ago but if its close to home check it out.Have fun hope this helps Greg
-

Lets see some pics of those nice bucks then :chuckle: :chuckle:

I have taken a nice 4/5 from there. I noticed some bear scat and am planning a bear hunt out there when I return to the area. Just gotta build a crane system to get it in the truck.
-
I've been on fort almost everyday since opening day. I've seen 18 deer. Just wanted to throw that out there!! :chuckle:

DONT SET UP TRAIL CAMS ON BASE ANYWHERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! range control conceders them surveillance and if your name or anything is on it you can get in lots of trouble. with that said (i just found out) i have alot of bear pics on here I'm not saying where they came from but there are alot of bears on base. just tring to save u some trouble
-
I used to hunt the fort back in the 90's. I don't know about today, but back then there was all kinds of deer. I agree with soldier5 and gasman as to the rules. You had to go to the adventure center back then and watch a 20 minute safety video and then sign in. The single best tip I can give is during modern rifle season, wait until the last weekend. They open an area that not too many people travel the entire year. The way that all the gun ranges are designed, they form a sort of horse shoe. In the center of that horse shoe is called the centeral impact area. There is several acres of thick trees and brush. Believe it or not, the deer are used to gunfire. But not the people traffic. I was with a buddy that took a fairly nice forky in that centeral impact area. There are sevice roads that run through that area you can very slowly and quietly walk. There are deer in there. I have sen them myself. On the south end of the fort down by the Nisgually river, you can hunt bear. At the Adventure Center there is a wall with all the animals taken off the fort. I saw pics of a couple of reall nice 4x4's taken off the fort. Another buddy I know a couple of years ago, took a real nice tall 3x3 at some honey hole he knows on the back side of the fort out towards Roy. I have a pic of that buck in the back of his truck. The deer are there, you just have to jump through a bunch of hoops to go chase them. Especially after 9/11. On a side note, There are some really huge deer out on the Yakima Fireing Center also.
-
every unit on the base has big deer in them. its just a matter of finding them.
-
pics
-
Saw 8 deer today on base! I shot one, my first one, my first year hunting! Hope to have some pictures up tomorrow.
What area?
We've been training out there the last week and a bear got in to our garbage on the east side.
-
I think you're taliking about area 11? I saw garbage all over the place.
-
Just arriving here to JBLM and was wondering if anyone could help out with a couple areas for me and my son to hunt blacktails? We are from the Adirondacks in New York and have hunted Whitetails but from what I hear we are up for a challenge with Blacktails. Thanks to all and good luck this season.
-
Darton--- First off ***WELCOME TO THE SITE***
I wouldnt bother with Ft.Lewis that much unless you know the areas... It's a pain the neck cause were the deer are at they don't open those areas. I would try Vail Tree Farm between Rainier and Yelm on Opening Day. There is alot of area to hunt with clearcuts, reprod, timber. Just thought I would put my :twocents: in and let you know. Good Luck!!
-
I do have to agree with Yelm Hunter on this one, especially for your first time hunting this area.
-
I have been out in JBLM the last 2 days. Seen 2 Spike and a doe. Also saw some big cat tracks!! Ill be out there a few times just to see if i can find them spikes again!!
-
I'm so poor this year I have to hunt the Post because its close...Not quite sure were we're going to be seeing I think they are only going to 5 areas open...
Hunterman(Tony)
-
9, 10 ,11,13,15,19,21.....those are the areas that are gonna be open ....they all got deer on them you just gotta be lucky...sit and wait for someone to push one to you
-
I think we're going to go to area 11..Its just down the road about 5 minutes..
Hunterman(Tony)

Hey,,,,,,,why you giving my spot????????????????????????????

The base is a great place to go if you know where to go.I was on area 4 last weekend and saw 12 deer in apx 4 hours 3 of then were bucks but nothing big.I just got back from area 10 hunting with my mom and she missed a good 120+ buck on the small arms impact area side of 10.Im of 30 vet of the base and I get a buck every year ,but Iv never got a deer in the early season. My best is 151 6X6 I shot in 08 on area 5 just behind the skeet range. My advise to you is use a treestand and stay all day. Most of my deer were shot around 1100-1130 so park it and stay quiet.Area 9,5,4,3 and 6 are good places to start.Stay away from 11,15,21,22,23, lots of poachers. Not alot of deer. Some elk on 21,23 and you need to get a pass to go to the adventure center to get your hunting pass .Dont forget your ins.card hunting lic and reg.for your rigand they charge 10 bucks now.Hope this helps you....
-
This might be a silly question, but are you allowed to take pictures of the deer you harvest while it's laying on jblm property? I know military bases are touchy about photography sometimes... does that apply in this case?

Yes. The adventure center has a board in the entrance where they would like you to post a pic. of the animal you harvested.

I am new to this forum and am looking for a place to put meat on the table. I hunted, for years, in Germany, and my freezer was never empty. I have tried, for three seasons, down in the Mossy Rock area (505 and 520), but so much is privately owned, and closed, it is a waste of time for one who is not from that area. :bash:
I hunt with a bow, here, and living in Federal Way, Ft. Lewis is much more accessable, to me, than some of the other areas I would need to drive to.
One of the most important things I learned, studying for the exam to get my license, in Germany, was like Fishermen, Hunters NEVER lie :chuckle:; they speak Latin. This means that only one who speaks "hunter" understands what a hunter is saying.
That being said, fellow hunters, I know there are deer and elk to be found on Ft. Lewis and I, also, know they will not come and jump into my vehicle for me. On top of that, I know it is, rather, late in this season. All that is left, for this year is ML and Archery Late Deer and Elk. Can someone tell me an TA where a novice Bow Hunter, wanting, only, to put meat on the table (horns are nice, but make terrible soup), can go and get a "bloody arrow"? If you have a "honey spot", I am not looking to take it from you, or interfer with it.
I have a Post Pass (an advantage of being an Army Retiree) so next year, I will be doing some scouting, for myself, and find some areas to try, anyway, but to, at least, have an idea would be good. I don't foresee a problem getting a Range Pass, if needed.
I would, also, welcome a hunting partner, during Archery Season for both deer and elk. I fully believe in all who are in a party share the "spoils of the hunt", with rights to the internals going to the one making the kill.
If I am just spinning my wheels, for this season, I would ask those who are familiar with 'Ft. Lewis Hunting' to tell me, as well.
Hunting for bear, next season, will, also be on my list.
I look forward to conversing more on this forum/thread.

No interpatation need here: Go to the NW Adven. center and get signed up. Once you do, find out what areas are open to hunt, sign in to one you think will be your best bet, and go hunt.
There are "No Secret Spots" on JBLM. park your rig, get out, and walk.........and hope you jump a deer out of its beds.
After you hunt an area, hunt it some more to be sure you didn't miss any logs to kick out a deer. Check out of an area and check in to another area to get familure with it.
There really is not one area better then others. Some areas don't see much field use but receive a lot of poaching because of the easy access. Other areas dont get poached but get a lot of field manuvers being done ain the area.
Just get out there and hope for some luck
-
Theres no deer out here. Move along. :chuckle:

i shot the last one saterday of late buck. :chuckle:

Thanks gasman, perhaps we will see each other out there next year.
-
nice deers muskrat......There is no deers on Ft. Lewis, there all at Mossy Rock, and winston..... ;) ;)
-
Based on what I have read here and experienced in Mosey Rock and Winston, I have to agree. I don't think Ft Lewis has EVER had as many deer as down there. My only problem is it is so dang far to drive, and I don't have the camping equipment needed to spend any time down there.
