I was up scouting bears today and my clutch went out on me, luckily I was able to limp it home. How much will it cost to replace it? My truck is a 1991 Toyota Pickup. Anyone know a good place to go? I live in Lake Stevens.
If ur broke they arent that hard to replace yourself if you got a spot to work on it and some tools :twocents: My friend in highschool had the clutch go out in his and we were able to figure it out with some help from his brother. His was lifted so it was easy to drop the tranny down to get at it tho. probably tougher if its stock...

Thats a very easy do it yorself project if you are somewhat handy with tools and have basic knowledge. Ive replaced 3 yota clutches and always went with a centrerforce, usually the cheapest one as they are better than stock. Put a dual friction in my 91 3.0 . Got it online for 320.00, had the flywheel resurfaced ( 15.00) , new throwout bearing and pilot bearing 35.00 I think and allignment tool 5.00. Pedal is not stiff at all on that, a little stiifer than stock but feels better IMO.
Did almost the same thing with my 91 3.slow except I put the heavier flywheel in.

I don't think id ever pay for "quality" when it comes to a car unless maybe its paint. A new cluch is a new cluch, take out all the bolts til the tranny comes out, take out clutch bolts then put bolts back in until you don't have any left, I did my first one when I was 16(somewhere around 20 total now because of friends and side jobs) and i didn't know what a box end wrench was at the time. i'd probably come over and do it for $150 in labor and you can get a cluch kit for another 150ish. It could easily be done in 8 hours and probably half that if you really know what your doing.

do the labor yourself, I did an 88 no tranny jack or anything did it in the sand. I just rolled the tranny on my chest and pushed it up into place. I was dirt poor at the time but got good replacement parts and she held up until I got rid of the truck long time later.
if you ain't got money to just throw at it then you need to save on the labor costs so you can afford good replacement parts.

As was stated before, its not that difficult though. I did my 92 Ranger by myself without a jack.
A shop is gonna easily set you back approx $1000.

Oh man,that brings back the memories.Me and my buddies did that a few times.One of them had a 65 impala.Bet he put a half dozen trannies in it. :bdid: One night after school he went out got the trannie all ready.Lowered it down on his chest.Then couldnt move. :yike:Car wasnt high enough.He wasnt strong enough to push it back up.He layed out there for about 3 hours with a trannie on his chest waiting for his Dad to get home from night shift. :chuckle:When he came back to school he was moving kinda funny.Asked him whats up.Thats when he told me the story! :chuckle:

Lifetime warranty clutch kits are usually reboxed cheap kits from who nows who, given a "Lifetime" warranty to entice you to purchace it.

Ok some FYI, Exedy global builds the clutchs for japanese vehicle manufactures, the clutchs are sold under the Diakin brand name, so Diakin is the OEM clutch supplier for toyota (not Aisin) Aisin is one of japans largest aftermartket parts suppliers.
Centerforce makes 2 clutches, the dual force will not increase your pedal effort to any level to become unble to push the pedal, or cause hydrallic failure (remember the clutch master and slave have to overcome the clutch pressure plate weight to disengage it) and i am not even going to try an explain how the centerforce dual friction works.
Easy job, sure its just nuts and bolts, a little weight to lift and done, your knowledge and skill level????
So i told you i'd give you an estimate:
1) Diakin clutch kit $215.00
2) Labor $540.00, thats 6.0hrs @90.00 hr, book time is 6.2 from mitchell, 6.4 from alldata.
3) Machine flywheel $ 45.00
4) Rear main seal $ 17.20
subtotal $817.20 +tax
Your original clutch (iam assuming it has never been changed) went 20years and ??? miles.

I guess when i said i wouldn't pay for quality i was refering to quality labor. I know some guys on here are auto mechanics and are probably pretty inteligent but honestly Im shocked most automotive guys can operate the time clock. I worked on aircraft for 5 years and its not really much different, one guy went to the hospital 9 times in two years because he couldn't remember to duck when he walked under the belly of a 737 when we were doing lap joint repairs.. if they can do it so can you. I like good parts but honestly you can get a limited lifetime warranty complete cluch kit for 130-175 dollars from schucks or autozone, i don't care if it goes out after i die.

I know plenty of good mechanics who are also smart good guys...
I have had a few bad experiences but mostly good ones...if you are confident doing the clutch yourself you will save on labor costs if you arent that labor cost can be priceless ...and ask around you can sort out good shops from bad real quick by asking....everyone is happy to tell you about the awful shop that screwed them ;)

I learned a lesson the hard way buying cheap parts (think internal throwout bearing in a 87 Jeep Comanche) First time I replaced the throwout bearing it took two days by myself. One to remove tranny, one to reinstall with substandard parts. I was a little slow to the uptake. By the third time the cheap throwout bearings went out, within a year and 1/2, it took my just three hours to remove the tranny (a tranny jack is a wonderful invention :rolleyes: ) and a little over three hours to put everything back together with (I had an epiphany) "quality after market parts",bearing, clutch etc...
Never had another problem with either of those parts. The moral of the story? IF you want to become as proficient at removing a tranny as I was..... cheap parts and practice makes perfect.
Do not get me started on cheap rebuilt starters and alternators, lol

My old neighbor could yard the 727 out of his Super Bee WITH HEADERS in under an hour :chuckle: :chuckle: He could put it back in a little over an hour. I suppose not many on here will recognize the significance of getting a trans out of that car with headers, suffice it to say the job will teach your average toddler some new words to go tell Mommy if he walks by a time or two during the process. :chuckle:

put a center force cluch in it you will not need a cluch for years . cost around 300 dollers ... i just orderd one for my 87 toyota . if you have mecanical skills you can have it out in an hour..
Sounds like you can do it yourself for less than $500 with quality parts and have it done in a weekend. :tup:
