Is that some burger? If so, we use our deer burger up very fast! A family can make a fine dinner from a pound of burger.
-
yeah same here..we grind most of our game except for the backstraps .....use it for many things
-
im gunna guess its right around one-one and a half pounds..

LMAO, it SCORES quite nicely with the family when you bring meat home. And that is what its all about. Oh and by the way I grind the backstraps also. The tenderloin usually gets a few eggs thrown in with it.

grinding back strap?!?!? sacrilege! thats the first thing gone when the deer hits the freezer, most of the time even before.

when you take two moose, 5 caribou and two bear in one year eat all the back strap. They are not that good anymore, but they taste mighty fine with some ground pork and some seasonings ;)

not what its about for me..if I wanted meat I would be at the store
-
It is about meat for me....but that is only a small part of it. The stores I go to don't carry venison. I also choose not to shoot younger deer for the fact that I can get twice as much meat from a mature animal.....and it takes me longer in the woods to find a mature one then a spike or a forked horn.
Don't take it the wrong way...I hold nothing against the ones that shoot younger animals. I also drew a cow tag this year and plan on filling that tag....thats good eats. I love to hunt and if it takes me a week longer out in the bush for twice the meat.....that's a bonus.

You can't eat the horns!

I hunt for all reasons imaginable including the meat.
I'll give the vacuume sealed burger a 10, looks very well packaged and good and lean.
-
Never had " horn soup" that was worth a damn. I like the meat, and I love the fact of trying to outsmart an animal on its own home territory.
-
I like the meat, but the bottom line is I hunt for the challenge of taking a mature animal..not heading out and shooting the first legal deer

OH HOW TRUE. if your a meat hunter dont waste your time in the woods, it will save you a ton of money if you just go to safeway or the butcher store and buy a side of beef

And see that is why there will never be a strong enough hunting community to stand up to things that are thrown our way. To some it is all about the meat, getting out there and enjoying themselves, and doing the same thing that you are doing (HUNTING) but yet told to go to the store. If you want a big RACK go to the high fence will save you a ton of walking, scouting, gas money, and everything else you consider to be hunting. It does not matter how we hunt, wether it be road, walk, biking, bow, shotgun, muzzleloader, rifle, all that should matter is we all (HUNT). If we did not have meat hunters that went out and shot does what do you think that would do to the population? Well enough ranting, one day you will understand... Hopefully.

:yeah: telling me to go to the store is like me telling you to go to a high fence. Besides QFC doesn't sell venison.
-
no reason to get all jacked up and pissed off there fellas, simply stating that it is cheaper if you just go to the store and buy meat, and saying go to a fenced in place to kill a big rack, well for me there isnt to much sport in that and i aint against meat hunters either no where in my post did it say that, hell i use my son i tell him to whack the first legal buck so dad can hunt for somethn bigger :twocents:

For me it is all about the hunt. I'm more in it for the meat then the horns but I love both.I would rather eat deer then beef and am willing to pay more for it. I'm not a bargain shopper.

And :yeah: . . . The saying "You can't eat the horns." kills me when people talk about taking young animals at the first chance they get. . . 90% of the time the bigger the horns are, the more meat there is on the animal! You can almost always find a young and dumb one to take the last few days for meat, but I'm surprised guys don't hold out longer for older animals. :dunno:

Growing up we only had a few days out of the year to hunt, and if we could get a deer or two it gives us more meat for the year. I have always shot the first legal buck I see, it can be a 3x3 mulie, a 180" mulie or a 150" whitetail. I could care less either way. To me it's always has been and always will be about being out in the field and being able to provide food for the table. I've shot some good bucks (6x4 mulie that we never had scored and a 5x5 whitetail that scored in the upper 130's) but to me they have the same place in my memory and on my plate as a little 3x3. Just because a animal has a larger rack than a smaller animal does it make it a better hunt? or a better trophy? To me it doesn't and I hope I never get to the point where all i care about is the antlers.

meat tast a heck of alot better then tag soup. anice set of horns doesentmake it taste any better they gust look nicer. :twocents:

Meat and experience... that is what a it is all about .... and a mature animal usually gives me more of both.

joe joe JOE now take those backstraps and rub a little olive oil on them season them up with pepper garlic and salt and bake them in the oven ...do not cut them up ...place them in their whole or in halfs ...this will make you change your mind ...or season them up up with salt pepper and garlic and rub smoked paprika on them and it will tear your head off !!!! just my opinion

Generally, yes, unless you simply luck into a big one. Dumb luck aside, it will ALWAYS take more of a hunt to bag a big buck than a small one. As far as a whats a better trophy. . . That's in the eye of the beholder. I know I'll value a nice buck I worked my ass off pursing several days out of the season than a meat spike I tipped over in a clearcut at first light opening day. To each their own. :dunno:
And I never said anything about only caring about antlers. I was saying that meat is never a problem, I could get it done in the first day or two, or I could extend my season by holding out for a bigger racked buck (which has more meat too!) and just fill the freezer the last couple days on a meat buck if needed.

It's not just the antler size as much as it is hunting mature animals. However mature animals often have bigger racks which is a huge bonus. Going after mature animals year after year generally gives me much more field time than if I shot the first legal buck I see. If I did that my hunt would almost always be over the first day and I can't remember a season in over 20 years when I didn't have an opportunity at a legal buck within the first two days. Many seasons it would be over within the first few hours of hunting. Mature animals also usually have larger bodies which is another bonus when it comes to putting food on the table. Some people say they are tough or gamey when they are older but I have found most mature bucks make mighty find table fare.

You know I had a nonhunter ask me once why is it all of us hunters talk about is killing the biggest racked animal out there if we say its all about the hunt, and or the meat. To be perfectly honest I had to take a minute to think then I asked this person what they loved to do in her case it was bowling. I then asked her why does she bowl she answered for a strike, and why not just throw it in the gutter I asked. She seemed perplexed so I said very simply we all strive to achieve what we perceive as the pinnacle achievement of our given hobby, or sport. I may hunt every year for that 400 inch bull, will I ever kill one? probably not. Its the dream its what gets me out there, and if I fill my freezer with some of the greatest protein god placed on this earth for my family then that a bonus. Anyways it really doesnt matter what gets us out there every year. It just matters that we do keeping the tradition alive, or in a couple generations our grandchildren may have no choice other than the local safeway.
