How many Washington hunters on here have traveled to Idaho specifically to hunt wolves? How many guys hunt deer or elk over there and bought a tag just in case?
Ever see any wolves or get any shots?
I am toying with the idea of making a trip this year to Idaho just for wolves. Shooting a big wolf is kinda getting me thinking....
-
I might..I have a elk and deer tag there..see how season goes..pretty full now
-
I have thought about it as well. I would like to bust one.
-
Myself and another member on here are trying to plan a trip over in November to hunt striclty wolves.
Should be fun and if we get one we will post up some pics...

Yeah me to ...Lets go ....

Sounds like they are going to have a trapping season on them because they don't think the quota can be met by boot hunters. If you can, this would increase odds of success tremendously.
-
If they go ahead and approve the reduced tags in the Lolo Zone, I'll be hunting wolves this fall and winter. I would love to run a trapline and still might but probably won't the non-resident trapping lic is very high at over $300.
-
You should be able to recoupe that 300 with 1 wolf ??
-
I will certainly be hunting them this winter, I believe the season will run to March 31, so riding snowmobiles while cutting wolf tracks seems like a fine way to spend a weekend to me.

Well that is $300 for the lic, gotta buy some wolf steel, then running the trapline, probably looking at over $1000 all total for a wolf or two....might be worth it, would sure be exciting to lay some steel for canis lupus occidentalis.

I see it realistically costing $1000 to $3000 to get a wolf by the time you figure in travel costs, expenses, and the fact a person probably will have to go numerous times to be successful.
If I have time, I am giving it a try.
-
I bought a tag the day they started selling them. I hunt deer over there so if I get one it will most likely be an incidental encounter. However I have have been seriously considering going over there for a week just to hunt wolves if I fill my WA deer tag early enough...
-
They should make deer and elk tags valid for wolves for non-residents the same way they did for bears/cougar. I think $186 is pretty spendy for someone being in Idaho for maybe a week or two which isn't much time to not only see a wolf but to get a shot at one.
I guess it all depends on the area you plan to hunt though. I was in the woods probably 30-40 days/year the 4 years I was going to UI. Spent lots of time from Elk River to St. Maries and everywhere in between at all times of the year, and never saw single one in the flesh, though I saw some sign. The one trip I made down to the McCall area I saw two. Go figure.
-
I might have to pick up some snares and a half dozen MB 750 Ws, but at $34 a piece and 5 pounds per trap, that will be a load for the back country. :)

Sounds reasonable! The Jeremiah Johnson in me would rather trap a wolf than shoot an elk. Wish I lived closer.

I wonder if you use recorded wolf howlings how many trips you would have to make before they showed up?

Can you get digital recorded howlings and load them into a foxpro caller? That would be the ticket, I think. Howling works for coyotes, why not for wolves? Thatd be an interesting predator calling trip...
-
I already have a single wolf, a pair and a pack of wolves howling on my foxpro.

Nice! Have you got a response with it? Or have you called anything in with it?

I'm seriously thinking about going over. Id have to do snowshoes though.
No snowmachine here.
I guess it would depend on, if I run into one while I'm over in Montana hunting :)
If I go...it may have to be after Christmas though. I've got waaay to much hunting planned this fall.....wait, is that possible?

Not me and not yet, but I have heard it worked for a couple guys during the first season.
-
im tring to figure out a way to spend most of december hunting wolves
-
I have several weeks planed for Idaho deer trips this fall. I will be carring a wolf tag just in case. I would rather shoot a wolf then a big buck any day.
-
I want one too. Been thinking about it for a couple months. Called IDFW and was told they are setting the season dates on 7/28.
-
Can you bait wolves??
-
Here is the rules for them as of now.

Tags for non residents are 36 bucks statewide after the fees. Kinda dumb not to have one in your pocket if your hunting over there.
-
$31.75 for a state wide tag!! Holy crap they listened!!!!!!! That was a smart move on their part, lots more guys will buy a tag and this will even bring in some that may not have been coming already. Nice move Idaho!!!
-
I'll have to check on this.... Prices like that make me want to make a trip this winter. Anyone know if you can buy licenses online?
-
the nut cases will be in the woods with you guys while youre hunting wolves..
-
I still see nonresident wolf tags at $186 ?

Thank God Idaho recognizes Wa State CWP's. I just happen to have one.... Probably Rainbows.
-
Dad and I have been talking about making a trip since we didn't draw any tags to burn some money on......

What does a tag for one of them cost? Can you call them in? Over hear you just yell "free handout" and they line up.
-
PETA once chose a sunny day to protest duck hunting The Fingers on the skagit river... They drove around on a rubber zodiac and scared all the resting, moving them around... There were a lot of happy Duck hunters that limited out that day, I think they even got invited to come back!

Good. When I called on Wednesday, I was told $186, BUT, you can get 2 tags.
-
I just bought mine online. Total was $36.20 after the fee. I hunt areas with plenty of wolves, so I'm hoping I can reduce the population by 1.

Every little bit counts
-
I'm going to hunt them..........I just bought a Weatherby Vanguard 257 mag for them !!!
-
I was wondering what caliber I would wanna use on them. If i see one during elk season ill use my 300 win mag, if not during season, I might just have to bring out the .264 win mag! or maybe i need a new rifle dedicated to wolves ; )

That's what I did. Good excuse for another gun.............

We are going into our normal area in Idaho for deer and Elk in November. Wolves are really taking a toll there. Hunting them for one yr has seemed to chance their attitude about people. The yr before the 1st season in 09' we heared wolves every night and had one 250 yrds above our spike camp at daylight... It even walked across the foot bridge on the trail- we saw the tracks. 09' when we bought 185$ tags we heard them at night and saw a pack several miles away- no close encounters. Last yr we found a few kills way up but only heard them one night. They are not dumb and are no way an easy animal to take- just have to luck into one. We know theres PLENTY of them out there.
-
we need to band together on this...people are getting into wolves take someone in! Ill be buying a tag now as they went to $31
-
Figures, I bought my tag when it was $186..... oh well.

I think they will give a refund if you call them
-
Trade it for a bear tag and buy a wolf tag. If they will do that.
