I met a fellow this weekend while out for a hike. I was south of Dayton, up in the mountains and he informed me that he had seen a grizzly bear earlier in the day. I asked him how he knew it was a grizzly and he said it was blonde colored. I then said that lots of black bears are blonde to which he replied that this bear had pointy ears and black bears have rounded ears while grizzlies have pointy ears. I gave up at this point, realizing that to try to educate him was a lost cause. I am still shaking my head about this dufous. Longer claws, dished facial profile and hump at the shoulders was what I have always heard of as the distinguishing features of a grizzly bear. Any others out there come across similar goofy folks?

It was nice to meat you Rufous :chuckle: Just foolin!!!!
I guess I saw 6 Grizz down there this year :chuckle:

:chuckle: I have met more than a few. Most hang out at the general store and want to talk to anyone in camo and tell them all their tall tales. Some real winners out there.

About 4 years ago we had a report of a baby grizz. Like you, he described it as blonde and running hard the other way. At least we do not see that guy here anymore. He swore he would never return to the Tucannon. Must have been a baby he said as it was pretty small, so he was afraid for his life knowing that momma and papa were very close. I also told him we have colored Blacks and he looked at me like I was the nut case.

Met some hippies on the trail sometime back that said they saw a bear in the area. They said not to worry because he was a nice bear. she must have known it was nice because it didn't eat them. We had sidearms on so I maybe she was worried we were going to shoot it. :chuckle:

:chuckle: gotta laugh, myself and a friend were headed in hunting and were trailed by at least 6 trucks, all road hunting...I said to my partner, watch this..I slammed on my brakes, jumped out of the truck pointing down the steep hillside, threw my gun up and started acting like I was gonna shoot..Boy...It was like somebody farted in all the trucks, they flew out of the trucks guns in hand scoping for whatever I was looking at.We laughed and kept heading in...

Think I met her boyfriend on the trail once. Sleeping late, had to step over him and his pal. They dug up a fire pit in the middle of the trail up to Melawkwa 5lb bag of dog food for a pillow...

I ran into a Guy last year bear hunting that told me he shot 2 bears in the same day and they both weighted over 400 pounds. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but 2 over 400 in the same day is hard for me to believe.
-
And he was still hunting? Hmm, must not have made much effort at recovery.
-
I've talked to lots of people who cant believe we have bears...just outside of issaquah! :bash: :dunno:
Then, half of them think bears are endangered. :chuckle:

Mistaking black bears for grizzly bears is a big enough issue in places that you have to pass a test in Montana to get a bear tag.
Where do you score?
