Got a new to me, used wall tent, and was thinking that I would like to waterproof it. What product do you guys recommend? I know that Cabela's sells Canvak for $18 per gallon, is this the best bet? Thanks, Scott

Yes, that is a good option, wont make it water proof, more like water resistant. Instead of completely saturating your tent with water, it will help it to shed it off and keep it dry......works good.
either that or the aerosal can style works. not sure what the name of the stuff we used for ours but on your folds and at the base seams will get the most use and will go brittle fastest and then it will start obsorbing water, so we just touched it up with the aerosal type and it keeps it pretty dry.

our outfit doesnt use any of the waterproofers. i dont know if they are all what their cracked up to be.. certainly they add weight. we just cover our wall tents with a cut to fit tarp.. once those tents get wet,, they take forever to dry and can be a pig to pack on a mule.

We dont waterproof ours either, our setup is a heavy duty silver tarp hanging over the sides about a foot or more and over the front of the tent about 10 feet. we then made some supports for our awning (10 ft overhang) out of emt and couplings from home depot it works slick. We have had the same tarp for probably 6 years with just a few spark burns in it. I also dont know why it makes such a difference but having that tarp on in cold weather keeps it way warmer inside.

My tent has been wet and dried many times and is as tight as could be. This and waterproof-er still isn't enough. This is what it takes to get my tent truly waterproof.

We used to set ours up and spray it inside and out with Thompsons Water Seal. Put it in a pump sprayer and spray it inside and out until it was dripping wet then leave it set up for a week to let it air out. Worked great.

I just talked to Sears Tent here and they recomended Thompsons water seal. Going to do it this summer.

Canvak is all I have ever used, mine is just an old army tent, when I bought it the seller said he had always used Canvak every couple of years to treat the canvas, when I got the tent home a buddy of mine told me to buy thompsons water sealer because it was cheaper and did the same job, not knowing much about canvas tents I called a couple of well known tent manufactures to see what they recommended and they too said Canvak would work great as it was formulated for preserving and conditioning canvas tents and not to use thompsons because it was for waterproofing wood not canvas and it would break down the canvas over time, one company I called I explained to the guy what I was wanting to do and the guy responds to me buy asking if I was treating a tent or a deck??

WEA300MAG, you don't get a condensation issue with using a tarp directly on the canvas?

No condensation at all but I have the wood stove burning a lot which probably keeps the moisture level down.
