State’s fifth wolf pack confirmed in Stevens County
OLYMPIA—Washington’s fifth gray wolf pack has been confirmed in northeast Stevens County.
Earlier this month, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) biologists caught, marked with an ear tag and released a 2-month-old wolf pup from the pack. Biologists have since been trying to capture one of the pack’s breeding adult wolves to radio-collar it for monitoring. The effort to document the pack began after local ranchers reported observing three wolf pups and hearing howling in late June.
The pack is believed to include a breeding-age male and female and at least three pups. The group has been named the Smackout Pack, in reference to geographic features in the area.
The Lookout Pack, confirmed in Okanogan and Chelan counties in 2008, was Washington's first documented resident gray wolf pack since a breeding population of wolves was extirpated from the state in the 1930s. Two more packs have been documented in Pend Oreille County—the Diamond Pack was confirmed in 2009, and the Salmo Pack was confirmed in 2010.
Last month, the state’s fourth documented pack—dubbed the Teanaway Pack— was confirmed in Kittitas County. DNA analysis of that pack’s adult female wolf indicated she is likely a recent descendant of the Lookout Pack.
The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is protected throughout Washington as a state endangered species. In the western two-thirds of Washington, the species is also federally protected under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). It is illegal to harm or harass a federal- or state-protected endangered species.
WDFW has been working since 2007 to develop a wolf conservation and management plan in anticipation of wolves re-entering Washington from other states or Canada.
A Final EIS/recommended plan—which was developed with a 17-member citizen group and included extensive public review and scientific peer review—will be presented to the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission in a special public meeting Aug. 4 in Olympia. Additional public workshops on the proposed plan are scheduled later this summer and in the fall.
“Wolves are re-establishing here on their own,” said Nate Pamplin, who heads WDFW’s Wildlife Program. “The confirmation of additional breeding wolf packs moves us closer to achieving a sustainable population, and also highlights the need to finalize a state wolf plan that sets recovery targets and management tools to address livestock and ungulate conflicts.”
For more information on the draft plan and all Washington wolf packs, see http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/. (http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/.)
Wolf sightings or activity should be reported through the joint federal-state toll-free wolf reporting hotline at 1(888) 584-9038. Joint federal-state Wolf Response Guidelines, including agency staff contact information, are available at http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/gray_wolf/contacts.html. Just got the E-mail from WDFW :'( :'( :bash: :mgun:

It sounds like they've made up their minds on the wolf plan.

A conveniently scheduled Thursday meeting. Imagine that!

I am glad they finally released this info to the public. We have been seeing these wolves tracks for a couple years, now if we can get the Blue Mountains pack and some of those other packs in Stevens, Ferry, Okanogan, and Chelan county confirmed, the state will be close to delisting.
-
The other comment I would like to make is that there are either 6 or 7 adult wolves in Unit 111 (smackout area). This pack had 4 adult wolves running together all winter. On the east side of the unit there are another 2 adults that were running together all winter. We saw tracks of both at the same time in fresh snow when we were looking for cougar tracks.
So with the 3 new pups, there are actually 9 wolves in this unit. :twocents:
-
So just a question and forgive me if it is ignorant. Couldn't this be a "good" thing? What I mean is if they keep confirming wolf packs at the rate they are will they have to trash the importing 15 breeding pairs plan? Or am I way off base?
-
They have never said they wanted to import or introduce any wolves. But there has been talk of translocation (which means to move wolves from one location within the state to another location within the state. The plan is still on the drawing board, so right now is the time to comment on the plan.

Gotcha. Thanks for clearin that up!

The WDFW facebook page decided not to post the latest news on our fifth wolf pack. I wrote them a little note on the last wolf news post.

Yeah, that would be a good thing... I have photographed wolves SW of Twisp and have heard of a pair SE of Winthrop... seems there are a few more animals out there than some initially anticipated.
Anyone headed to Idaho or Montana this year to get some practice? :chuckle:

barbara likes to quote "respected peer reviewed journalism" in an article that mentions the epidemic of lyme disease coming if we don't have wolves controlling the deer and elk, but strangely that article makes no mention of the worms the wolves are carrying that are much more virulent? great article, barb!

i added some useful links to resources for the coming years... little red riding hood, the boy who cried wolf and the three little pigs. funny how it's always "the big bad wolf" not "the beautiful, cuddly, necessary for the environment wolf."

Driving down Meadow Lake Rd the other day and a nice sized wolf crossed the road right in front of me. No time to get the camera ready. Definately a wolf. He crossed on a heavily used blacktail trail that runs down into a creek. My neighbor has ctv cameras on his roof in the same area and says he has video of wolves on his acreage. Havent been over to check it out yet but I will soon. I've been down in that area and seen tracks. I always thought maybe it was someones dog track because they were too large for coyote tracks. I guess those things are making there home all over the place. :(
