I am just getting into hunting and I have been watching a lot of hunting shows. They seem to have a lot of success with various calls. I was wondering if any of these would be effective on Black-tail? I was looking into buying a rattle bag or the Knight&Hale pack rat, the Primos Uproar, primos little can, and maybe getting a couple of different scents. Are any of these items worht my money, if not are there any that are recommended?

They are good to have i have never called anything in with one but i have a primos grunt call and when my daughter got her first mule deer he was on hes way out and i grunted at him and it stopped him and gave my daughter the shot she needed.

Thanks for the info. I think I will get the stuff that i want then. I really hope it brings me luck, I want to feed my family.

I don't know about blacktails but for whitetails a grunt call is a must in my opinion. I've only called one in but it has stopped many a buck so I can get a 3 second longer look. :chuckle:

For my 40th birthday, some friends gave me a hunting book called Deer Talk. It was actually a 180 page advertisement for the the Deer Talk deer caller. Figuring that the book was free, I went ahead and bought the call for $14.95. It was two pieces of plastic with a rubber band sandwiched in-between. A friend at work coached me on this until he thought I was acceptable.
Come hunting season, we were out scouting and every now and then I would sound off on the call. Nothing.
On the way home, there was the obligatory herd of deer in the farmer's field behind the no hunting sign. This was a perfect opportunity to see the results of this call in action. We pulled off onto the side of the road, rolled down the window and waited a bit. I put the call to my mouth and gently did my best with it. The deer nearest me stood upright like he just peed on an electric fence and then lowered his head and bolted as fast as he could to the far corner of the field. The rest of the deer just cast a backwards glance as they sauntered over to join him.
You might want to pass on the Deer Talk deer caller.

never messed with blackies, but have grunted in many of whitetails, last year had one spot me(having a bad day droped my benchmade and was backtracking to find it) and was running away, one the other side of the ridgeline was my dad working his way to the fourwheelers to grab lunch. I started doing challenging grunts and snorts. The buck stopped in his tracks looked at me, then dad unloaded on him (que iraq flashback)and stole the buck from me :chuckle:. dad never heard my grunts but was confused as to why the buck just froze and looked away from him.

Red Ryder,
I had an experience with the same call, same type of situation, but it turned out differently. I was hunting antelope with a friend in Montana. We saw some mule deer as we were driving from one spot to another. They were about 50 yards off the road and he was anxious to show me how well the "deer talk" call worked. So I pulled the truck over and rolled the windows down, and he sounded off on the call. That doe came running in immediately, until she was only 30 feet from the truck. She then stood there stamping her foot and staring at us for several minutes. So, they really do work. There's a good video made by the same company that has some really good footage. It's worth watching if you can get a hold of it.

I have the true talker and I love it. My wife has the can and the uproar, and I can make pretty much all the same sounds as her two calls but only have to carry one and I think it's easier to use. :twocents:

You guys are awesome, thanks so much for all the info. I have posted two questions and I have been very pleased with the feed back. Again thanks.

I have had blacktail and mule deer respond to the deer talk call, never shot an animal as a result of the call.I have noticed that I can get bucks to stop when I blow a distress call, just waiting for mr big to stop.

I have tried a few and the only that has worked for me on blacktail is the ( ridge runner ) made by quaker boy ...the name speaks for itself ....

I would add that calling animals is different from caller to caller and animal to animal. I have seen blacktail stop and turn back towards a makeshift grunt my buddy made with just his mouth. Then again I have seen deer respond similarly to a noisy fart (if the wind is right). They're about as unpredictable as your average housewife. Buy the call and give it a shot. If it seems to work, try to perfect it. If not, sell it on Craigslist or write it off as "research and development" on your 1040.

your standard cottontail call will bring them in if they wanna come...adjustable grunt works, and the bag of bones brought this guy running in,,

Yes, they do work, but if they worked all the time they would be illegal.I think they work best if you also use scent to play up the scenario.
