We just got back from Lk. Chelan and did pretty well. Saturday my buddy in the picture and i caught 14 he got a 12, 15, and a 17 #er! My biggest was 8. Today we only got two it was really slow. Didnt see much other action around. On the way over we did get to see about a 300 lb. blackie on stevens pass.

Nice Fish :chuckle:
-
Wow some nice fish you got there!! Was that the blackie that has been hanging out near the Stevens Pass Nordic Center?
-
The blackie was on the north side way up on the hill.
-
Nice fish. Were you jigging or trolling? I might head up there this week, was there anybody catching kokanee? Do you eat those nasty things? I have tried to eat them and it is like eating a big hunk of fat.
Travis
-
Good job! Nice ones. I'll be over there next month targeting smallmouths.
-
nice...come take a brother with ya next time ur gonna tear em up ;)
-
fishhunt223 we were trolling in 30 to 150 feet. No kokees saw a ton on the surface though sunin themselves. We eat the smaller ones and you have to cut the belly out. Smoked they are pretty good. We just try to help the kings and other fish that get hammered by them. The rest are crab bait! Try using coyote spoons they work really well.
-
Maybe this winter longtat. We might try to do a get together over there with some guys on here. Winter is the best for the big ones!
-
The small ones are alot better than the big ones for sure. I usually just use thm for crab and crawfish bait. My favorite way to catch them is use 5 oz jigs and pieces of kokanee out on top of mack island. I have never had much luck trolling even though I know many people do. I catch more Burbot on jigs also.
Travis
-
Huntinphool here you go. We have caught fish with everything in this box.
-
I will pick some of these up for sure
-
Talked to a guide from Chelan today at the show, he said the best time to fish for these big guys is the next couple of months. I'm going to hit it a couple times this year, anyone else feel like dragging their boat over?
-
I'm in for a trip or two... Got to get my down riggers hooked up first... Man another excuse to go to SportCo...
-
Got to get my down riggers hooked up first..
I can help you out, let me know and we will knock it out
-
Good job! Nice ones. I'll be over there next month targeting smallmouths.
Now your talking!!!!!!!!!! ;)
-
Boy I would love to drag the boat over but I might be dragging my crap down to the Columbia for them damn springers. (to addicting) plus I do it every year. That sure does look fun. What month did he say was the best? FEB, MAR, April???? I might have to do that one weekend.
-
He said Feb/March are the best :dunno:
-
really :o I would have never thought that. Are you heading over? I need to do a little reaserch....
-
Will be out of town the next few weekends but want to hit it after that.
-
Ok so how many guys are planing on going? I can get 2-3 boats to go. Its best to fish no more than 3 out of a boat, unless you are set up real well. My buddies sister has a lot on the lake we could probably camp at or we can set up at the park. It would be nice to get 10+ guys to go and do a little tourney.
-
I would be down to go if there was no Springer action happening. Unless my buddy has the weekend off, it would probably just be me, so if anybody needs a boat to fish out of, can throw in some gas money and crank up manual downriggers, you are welcome to fish with me. :)
-
Have you ever been antlershed?
-
Personally may and june have been the best months for me. Much nicer weather also, for a bunch of guys want to get together. The lake can still be real rough until later in the spring, and freezing weather through march is not uncommon in chelan.
-
When does everybody plan to go? I think we need to narrow it down and get a group together. I can bring a boat. I prefer before or after springer and turkey season because I will spend most of my time in later March, April and early May shootin and catchin. Never done that type of fishing so it would be a little learning experience. Looks like to much fun to pass up.
So when would people rather go? I have seen a few want to do the June time.
-
Have you ever been antlershed?
Nope, but would love to learn how to do it. I have most of the gear that was pictured, and have a 20' NorthRiver with downriggers.
-
i no the secret bait for that. and steely's with special notellem sauce. well i hope to get out and get some big ones this year
-
I've got friends of the family who have a house on the water north of Manson and every Labor Day weekend the family would pack up and go visit for the weekend. I remember spending every morning as a kid on the dock fishing. One year I caught from the dock a 14 & 16 inch trout on a piece of bread I had spit on (still my largest trout). There was another year my brother casted out and set the poll down and went up the get a quick snack and when he came back the poll was gone. Come to think of it he has never replaced my lost mickey mouse pole. Some good memories of the lake.
-
@ antlershed I think I fit the description you outlined. I'd love to get in on a trip over there.
-
My cousin went over last week and fished with one of the guides. Here is how they did.
-
@ antlershed I think I fit the description you outlined. I'd love to get in on a trip over there.
If we get a trip put together, you are welcome to fish outta my boat.
-
Man Skyval your killing me with those thumbnail teaser pics, get the full screen shots up for me to drool over. We have got to get this trip going guys.
-
Ive never fished for those but ive allways wanted to . I hear there are alot in lake Cle Elum but its a pretty tight group that fishes for them . Im trying to get my neighbor to get on board .
-
OK lets make this thing happen Friday March 20Th - Sunday the 22ND. Leave Friday afternoon/evening. We can figure out a common meeting place and caravan to the lake if wanted. As far as accommodations I am working on trying to get us into a house/cabin. If that does not work we can look at getting into a motel. One other option is campers/trailers. Not sure how we could work that out though. What do you guys think about doing a little tournament? Maybe $20 per person. This would go to the boat with the most fish. Then have a side pot of $10 per person for the person with the biggest fish. This would be a combination for both days. It could be a good chunk of change for the winners/winner.
Lets get a list of who is bringing a boat and who is going. You must be a member of HuntWa to be in the tournament. As I said before I suggest 3 guys per boat but if you are comfortable with fishing more that is OK. Running down riggers with more than that can be a little awkward. Any other ideas you have please include.
-
I'll be springer fishing then...
-
:yeah:
Same here. I will be down there every damn weekend hitting those Springers
-
I can't make it this weekend BC, but can the next weekend. Let me know if this gets pushed out a week or two.
-
What depth are you trolling at for the lakers this time of year? Ay general areas and or tips? Thinking about doing it sometime soon. Lures?
thanks
Chris
-
I want to go soon as well teacherman. The guides have been going between 250-300 feet
-
200-300 feet and within 1 foot of the bottom the whole time. Bigger flatfish or similiar lures work. Color doesnt matter a bit since it is much to dark to see at that depth. Just make sure your lure makes lots of vibration.
Travis
-
We are heading out on Friday is anyone going? We are hauling over 2 boats and we are full in the two so no tag alongs.
-
holy crap guys, these fish are amazing. Will the fishing for lakers still be hot in April? 10 more days till I'm in WA and I'm certainly interested in fighting a few of those brutes.
Curtis
-
Not sure that I will be able to make it this trip, too much going on. April may be the time I can go.
-
I will be down in Camas chasing springers. have to do it next time!
-
I have to pass this weekend as well. Heading to Vegas for the opening rounds of the tournament. Let me know if and when an April date is set.
-
Well I just got back and we had a good time. Sat. it took us 6 hours to locate the fish and then we did alright. 90-130 ft. It was pretty slow all in all. Day 1 me and a friend were in 1 boat and 3 others friends in the other. We caught 6 they caught 1 and a Kokee at 150 feet on a K-13. :chuckle: I got a 11lb and an 8lb the first day, as well as 3 of the others. I gave the other boat a ton of crap and told them they did not catch fish because they started drinking before they put the first one in the boat and that they drank too much. They were so mad at us! :chuckle: Day two we got out late and got on them right away, but a little deeper than the day before. 160-200 ft deep one 8lb and a couple little ones. I got the 8 and one other. We left at noon and I wish we could have fished all day! :'(
-
The first two pics is the other boats fish. Here is ours! :IBCOOL:
-
This was todays total.
-
nice work.
looks like a good time was had by all.
-
Looks like a fun trip, never have been over there, and caught any, maybe someday. Just 2 boats went?
-
Yeah, not one person from here went on the trip! Im heading back over in a month and a half.
-
That sucks, it sounded like there was a lot interested, oh well I quess most are a bunch of couch fisherman/hunters. :chuckle:
-
No doubt! :chuckle: :chuckle:
-

I'd rather catch Springers than lake trout any day of the week.... :twocents:
-
Did you catch any?
-
what a fool!
-
Went out fishing for springers, Like I said I would. No fish here, did manage to get a stealhead on the way home on the Cow! No couch fisher/hunter here...... (Bearhunter)
-
nice fish, good job BC , might head east this summer, a friend always camps at roosevelt, wants me to bring my boat w/and go up there, ever fish there? I think he camps around 7 bays or keller somewhere, thanks big iron.........
-
what a fool!
Not sure who you are refering to... I guess I should have added a /blackmouth to my post since that's all I managed to chase this weekend.
-
Wish I could have made it, had to cancel my plans anyway seeing as how sick I got :bash: Hope to get out there soon though.
-
I didn' realize you where going, I wasn't paying attention. :bash: The fish that where caught under 150' how deep of water where you in? Thats all the line I have on my down riggers. How big of ball at that depth?
thanks
-
You need to keep your bait within 1ft of the bottom most of the time. We did fish under the schools of kokees but did not pick and lakers up from under them. Between 90' and 200' and we were on the bottom at all of those depths.

thanks a lot, not this weekend but next I'm going to try and head over if Deer Lake in Steven Co. isn ice free enough to get the boat onto. Large Kiwi's work I'm assuming, its what I've used for them on Deer Lake.
-
Coyote spoons and a few on k-11 and k-13's.
-
We chartered a trip a couple of years ago. Bottom tracking downriggers, 12 lb ball at about 200'. We got one 14 pounder and a bunch in th 3-6 pound range.
-
Hey BC, what color on your Kwikfish? or does it matter as long as your on the bottom?
-
The deeper you go the darker it gets, we tend to use darker colors but we have caught them on light colored as well.
-
thanks for the info
-
Heading back over the weekend of the 9th. Anyone interested in hauling over there?
-
NO
-
Well just got back again. None in the teens this time. Sat. we took two guys out who at an auction bought a trip that we had donated. We boated 15 Lakers between 3-10 lbs. It was a beautiful day and we had no wind. Today Robby and I went out for a few hours to try some new spots and baits and put two in the boat and we caught and released a 16'' king. Lots of deer on the way over and back.
-
nice work dude.
-
Its a lot of work with manual down riggers :bash:! You got to be on the bottom and at 200 ft. it is a long ways to the top!
-
those are some great looking fish.
-
Very Nice guys! :brew: I hope those boys tipped well! :)
-
Congrats, nice lookin fish. I spent the weekend resting from my damn tonsillectomy..... :'(
-
Nice fish. Reminds me of fishing on Flathead. Out of curiosity, whats the water temp?
-
Good job, you guys slayed em.
-
QW the water was 53 at the surface.
-
nice, thanks
-
Guess what I caught Fishing Is For Fools (FIFF) doing this weekend! :chuckle: We just got back today and had a great time. I broke down and bought myself a new toy. I will post pics of it later. We had to take her out and get here dirty. Total we hit 18 in a day and a half. Day one it took us 5 hours to find them and FIFF caught the Smallmouth in 60ft. Ive caught very few that deep. I was a little suprised as we have never caught one while laker fishing even in the spring and summer while trolling in as shallow as 30ft. 13lbs. was our biggest and was caught by LITTLE FIFF. I will be spending quite a bit of time over there in my quest fof a 20 pounder! My biggest was a little over six.
-
Awesome guys
-
When you gonna get over there HP?
-
nice fish BC chaser. Cant wait to see some catch and pics of the new toy.
-Fish On.
-
Nice fish! Looks like you had Kelly Rig the boat wish some good equipment!
-
Nice fish!
-
When you gonna get over there HP?
Would like to BC, will work on it
-
Sweet trip! Easy on the girls, they're napping for the winter.............. :chuckle:
-
Nice- I haven't caught one since summer vacation in Montana when I was 14.
-
I've never caught one, im so close i should be up there every weekend. but right now im working on hitting rufus as much as i can.
-
I took my wife over for her birthday/valentines. Saturday we fished for just under 4 hours and boated 7 fish and lost a really big fish at the back of the boat :'(. The fish were all between 3 and 6 lbs.
Hey FIFF do you recognize the rod? :chuckle:
-
Are there any 50 # lake trout in washington?
-
Im sure there is but one has yet to be caught. I think the SR is 37lbs. :dunno: Flathead is full of monsters and I will be going over there shortly!

Nice, were you trolling off the bottom in about 200' of water?
-
Between 40-100ft and right on the bottom. We are going back on the 27th as well as the 6th.
-
Sounds like fun, my daughter and a friend and I fished over there with a charter guy (Dad's something or other?) many years ago and had a blast. My ex and I used to catch some awesome rainbows up off of Grade Creek back in the mid 90's.
-
Looks like one lucky bidder from the sportsmans convention in Bellevue will get to go with Drew on a laker trip in the near future in that new boat of his! Way to go Drew for donating the trip!
-
We just got back again and I forgot my camera so a buddy had a cheap-o and another buddy showed up with his wife today and she took a few pics as well. FIFF boated a 16.8 lbr within 4 minutes of being in the water on Sat. Total we boated 15 in two days and had to really work for what we got. We caught them between 38 and 202 feet. We also got to see a monster Tom on Sat. morning at 2 a.m. right down the street from my house, I bailed out of the truck and got 30 yards from him.
-
Awesome!
-
Great job and hey that's a good looking boat, how is everything working out on it?
-
BC the kings will start turning on in a short time with this warmer than usual water temps. Got some real nice ones 14 - 18 lbs by june last year, and should be better this year. Then we started fishing the kings on the Icicle, crowded but killer, then back to Chelan for more brights. It's a kick in the ars, probably see ya there. Don't know each other well yet but will if you're going to be fishing Chelan. When it slows down for kings and lakers and your bored, the smallies will kick ars around the town docks and bridges with 6' rods, 8#, with reapers, grubs and plugs in crawdad or grey smoke and silver, red flake. Picks up at the end of april till june. Probably didn't need to tell you any of this, because it's evident you catch plenty already. :) :)
Have fun and rip some lips :chuckle:

HEY THATS MY POLE
-
Hey, DF thanks for the info on the kings! Out of a couple hundred lakers we have boated in the last several years I have only caught one king. As far as the smallies go I used to tournament fish and got burned out on fishing because of it. Im starting to get back into fishing again and bass is out of the runnings for me. Maybe a little top water every now and then would be a little fun. Im actually looking forward to carp shoot out of the boat because we can shoot off the top of the cab!
-
Let me know when you go carp shooting! I need an invite, Ive got the stuff just havent used it yet! Nice Fish, when are you taking the people that purchased the trip at the SCI show?
-
Cohoho, I will get moer detailed pics up on here later of the boat. This was the first time we ran all 4 riggers at once. I thought for sure we would have had problems and lots of tangles because of the constant turning and bouncing on the bottom but everything went really smooth. One more thing that I have to get is my bow mount. Im going to go with the Minn Kota Riptide RT80/ST/CP/AP 80lbs. W/ the 60'' shaft. Im wired for it and will use it for walleye and carp shooting. I will let you know when the tuna trip will be!
-
I will Bear, my bro and I are the only ones out of our friends that do it. It is a kick in the pants! Im waiting to hear from the guy, I talked to him on day two and he just bought a boat and wants to learn the fishery. I will let you know when we are going to go back over so you can jump in.
-
Looks like a good time.
-
Whenever anyone goes over and fishes for these Lakers..... please keep and kill as many as possible!!! These fish need to be removed from the food web.... the native cutthroat and kokanee populations will go back through the roof!!! These are the worst fish for the Lake Chelan food web possible.....
-
Last weekend. 7 on Sat. and this toad was the only fish we caught on Sunday. Really slow for us as well as others we had talked to.
-
oinker
-
BC That is toad of a laker...
-
Anyone fished there lately??
-
You want to get the REALLY BIG fish you need to go up lake a bit and get down deep to the 2000 foot holes. :chuckle:
Yeah, it's hard to believe we have a lake here in WA that is that deep.
-
I'll be over the weekend of January 21-22-23 fishing with a buddy. If anybody else is going to be over that weekend send me a PM and we can compare notes on the water or over a beer at night if you want.
Lake Chelan is at least 1420 ft deep at full pool (some say 1486ft). Bottom of that lake is still well over 300 feet below sea level, though.
-
Just over 1400 feet deep. Hmmm, I have always been told it was about 2000 feet.
-
1486........2000.......reguardless it's friggin deep! I keep saying to myself that I'm going give it shot one day, but still haven't done it.
-

Do they make downriggers that go that deep? Could only imagine the size of a reel to hold that much line.
-
I have 500 feet of cable on my riggers. Deepest I've ever caught a laker there has been just over 300 feet. Some guys go down to 400-ish... but I don't know anybody that fishes deeper than that.
-
what size of balls do you guys use for 300 feet??
-
what size of balls do you guys use for 300 feet??
Man, what an opening for some crazy responses.... :chuckle:
I would use the largest that your downrigger can handle to reduce the amount of blowback and allow you to more accurately follow the depth contours.

I got big balls. 12 to 15#'ers. :chuckle:
Trolling for these guys is very slow, typically never over 2.0 mph, so blow back isn't too bad - but it's still there. I also run an "outrigger rod" down the middle with a snap weight on it... in 220 feet at 1.5 mph, line counter says I have 600 feet of line out. Almost hate to see that one get hit at the end of the day!
And, I run manual riggers. Really makes you think twice about putting that extra bit of bend in your downrigger rod when you're over 200 feet. Pretty much why I don't often fish alone out there -"you gotta crank the downrigger, I have to steer the boat!" :chuckle:

Did that for years, the electrics were well worth the price especially as I did most of the driving and cranking.
-
Two good fish from last year.
-
Big old fish!
-
Heading out to try and catch some lakers tomorrow on lake Chelan. I will let you know if i get anything!
-
I only ended up catching 1 fish in two days. :bash: I guess it wasn't to bad for the first time. :chuckle: better than getting skunked. I also was able to land a big white towel. :chuckle: So i will be heading back this coming weekend. Will be going with a guide Friday for a 4 hr. trip and get to know how it is done. :chuckle: with Lake Chelan Adventures. Then go out with my boat Friday afternoon and sat.
