Title: Wyoming deer and elk points
Post by: 3nails on July 25, 2011, 11:56:25 AM
Bought points this year for the first time for deer and elk in Wyoming. My son will be 13 this season so I figured if we buy for three years he'd be a good age to handle a hard hunt. Anyone know how many points are needed for a quality hunt for each?

Very much depends on the area. What area are you looking to hunt. I have around 8 points so it varies alot on the area. I know its on the internet.

The area where the big boys are.  :chuckle: No, seriously, I haven't looked into areas too much yet as I figure I'm still a couple of years out. I've hunted Idaho and Montana real hard so might as well start into Wyoming. Have you been buying points or aquiring them by not getting drawn?

All the draw info you can ever need right here........
https://gf.state.wy.us/wildlife/hunting/stats/demandpdf/index.asp

Click the year you want.
Choose deer or elk.
Under Preference points, click on either Non Res or Nor Res Special to the right in blue.
This will give you the data on how many points it could take to draw.

I'm almost in the money for Moose, still hanging for sheep.  Not doing deer or elk there.

I have six points for the elk drawing, it was a 57% chance at drawing this year but I only bought the point and wasn't in the drawing.  I will probably just keep buying my points untill I get drawn for Wa.

Can you get a decent tag for deer or elk with, say, 3 points?

Drew a great Bighorns Elk tag last year with 3 points, and G and H for deer are pretty easily drawable with 3 points...

Most take anywhere from 6 to 16 (and counting) for an any or bull tag, just depends on the hunt area you choose.

My #1 and #2 choice went to 10 and 11 point holders this year.  I might get lucky in the next couple years after having 9 points this year.  All depends on how many of those remaining 10 point holders apply again.  How many other point holders with more than me choose to move to the same areas as me.  Then there's the preference point only buyers who come out and play in the draw finally.
At least I know I will get drawn, eventually.

I'm with 9 as well.  Money for me is 10.   Course you have point "creep" to deal with.  As for sheep, its getting better all the time.    Key for me is to get drawn before the wolves take down all the permits which is happening at a dramatic rate of speed.(moose that is)

here are the sheep and moose total points if you want to get an example of point structure.

they break down deer and elk in the same place.

I too have just gotten into buying my points for Wyoming.  Last year was the first year.  I am going to buy points for antelope and deer.  A good buddy that i went to taxidermy school with and lived with during school, lives in Wyoming and grew up there his whole life and told me that he would be glad to take me out and help with any tag i draw.  He let me in on a couple of good units for antelope and said that i shouldnt have any trouble drawing with two points for the 2012 season, so if lucky in the draw, it looks like a Wyoming antelope is in the works for next season.  His family has owned an outfitting/guide services there his whole life so he really knows his stuff. He has always wanted to take a blacktail so I told him i would be glad to return the favor and try to get him a good blackie. :IBCOOL:
