Title: Removing rust
Post by: 338WinMag on July 26, 2011, 09:24:01 PM: Hi everyone. I have a slight problem with one of my guns.. A few weeks ago I picked up my Ruger 10/22 from from folks place. It had been stored in one of those soft gun cases for apx a year. I opened the case up and removed the gun only to find some small patches of rust on the barrel. My question is from everyones experience what is the best way of removing it with out doing to much damage? Thank you for your input!!

Post by: 338WinMag on July 27, 2011, 07:12:19 PM: Thanks for the replys. I picked up some 0000 steel wool and used some rem oil and and gently rubbed it on the rust spots and seem to do the trick..

Then use a good solvent to remove what brass may have come off on your barrel.... done, done. That is the old school way. :tup:

Hey I tried that on my "new to me" Remington 870 and it works and its cheaper and safer(I think) then using steel wool...

Brass or a penny will work as well with a good solvent. Bottom line never store a gun in a soft case you are asking for problems. :twocents:

I do, but I also have an unlimited supply of silica packets that go in my cases at least twice a year... plus mine get taken out and played with enough that they will never rust in a case..
