Headed over the hill to get some summer like weather this week with a bucnh of little ones. Wondering the best prospects for kids and fishing may be in the area? I see Fish lake has perch! Are these plentiful and easy to catch for the kids? Any insight at all about tactics, locations ect would be highly appreciated!

Ok.....Here is what to do.....Get a boat.....Just out of the Cove Resort turn left.....go up lake til you see the flag pole on the cove side of the lake......now, turn out and go about 1/3 of the way across......Drop anchor!!! Fish for the perch at this spot by tying your weight to the bottom of your line....then you want your hooks above the weight.....bottom hook about 2 inches above weight.....next one about and inch above where bottom hook is tied! Since winks are not out you should just use worms!! Fish lake has a limit of 25 perch each......but the size is pretty good! Plus you will probably catch some trout, but I wouldn't eat them out of there this time of year!
If you have any other questions, just shoot me a PM!

Kids can have a blast fishing from the dock at Fish lake (if it is not too crowded) my boy use to love it. Lots of trout and Kokes, with perch and others thrown in. The wind picks up in the afternoon sometimes and can make it hard to row a boat or use a electric trolling motor. We watched a 5 year old hook a 3 pounder from the dock. His dad yells set the hook! The kid yanks the fish completely out of the water, over everyone's head and into the swimming area to disappear. It was the biggest fish of the day, lol.

If you don't have a problem putting the little kids on a boat, those dock-boat rentals at the Cove can be a blast. The last time we fished there we caught about a billion trout. Good times...watch the wind.

Hey 300mag do you know if Nimrod has a retail open to the public? I see you live right there and I have a ton of Nimrod gear and love it. I want to get the big haul bag now.

I've never been there but it sounds like fun. Just one thing tho' - Why shouldn't they be eaten this time of year?

I think he was talking about the trout. The reason is the lake warms up since it is summer. and once you catch trout in 65 plus degree water they tend to not taste very good and get "muddy".

Aha. Gotcha. Thanks.

just spent this last weekend there with the wife. We caught one off the boat the first morning and two off the dock the second morning (trout) the kids seemed to be catchin the perch off the dock pretty good with worms. Either way you go your bound to catch somethin and get the kids to have some fun, the folks that run the place are always nice and helpful with tips

any advice on fishing from the shore?
very little shore access

Mostly private shoreline but you can rent boats at the resort.

It was a fun fishery. Perch was a bit slow but seemed to be for most. We caught a few though. does it ever heat up there and get lights out perch fishing?

Cove Resort is actually a National Forest permitee. They are on Forest Service managed land.
There is also National Forest land on the north side of the lake.

We used to catch perch just off the lilly pads, using an eyeball of a perch on a jig is the best, plus the eye stays on the hook, perch are alot better than those scrapfish trout.

Grew up fishing that lake. I've had many days where we caught and released perch in the hundreds...
