Hey this is my first time hunting in Washington. Looking for a decent public land opportunity to hunt in the Teanaway unit. Anybody know of any suggestions? Not looking for your secret spot or anything...just a spot to go out and find some deer. Thanks!

What season are you hunting? Archery, muzzle loader, or modern? If you are doing modern I would recommend packing in somewhere just to get away from the crowds of orange that you will be competing with. We were just overe there hunting bears and saw quite a few does but only 1 little 1x2 buck. That is where I shot my first/only buck and it has been on a down slope as far as numbers in the last few years. :twocents:

Most land from 97up the valley to the river is private with no permission to be had. Sorry thats all I know.

There isnt going to be many deer this year, the wolfs are killing them all.

I will be hunting the modern firearm (general season). Sled--are you saying that all the land west of 97 up to highway 2 is private land? I was hoping that was all public, and I thought it was from looking at a map on WDFW website. I was thinking I could just take one of those roads going west and just follow it as far as I could and go from there. But you're sure thats private?
I'm new to the washington hunting regs, but I guess since I didn't draw I can hunt anywhere with my tag. I would just like to stay close to teanaway because thats where I will be staying.

Lots of public land to hunt in 335. Just got to put in your mileage. And you'll not be alone, lots of pressure. Ask some land owners also. See if you can access their land to get to public. Good luck.

Anybody know where I can get topo maps near federal way and a map that shows where the public land is at?

The land west of 97 is not private,now going from teanaway road then you have to get permission to access that land.In my honest opinion I would head further east to hunt the teanaway unit is losing more and more land each year and its extremely over crowded not to mention low deer numbers your really stacking the odds against yourself hunting this unit and I have been hunting it for 20+ years.

I think you should research some data on harvest reports and such to determine that,I would say hunt here but I think you will get frustrated at the lack of game sure you will see plenty of does and spikes if you hunt hard but the chance at even a small legal buck is so slim.This area is so over hunted and public land is so limited I think you would waste a hunting season trying to hunt here.I will give you an example how bad it is there is a certain creek on the teanaway road that is really popular to hunters and two years ago on opening morning I counted 32 rigs parked at the gate.If you want to hunt this area I want you to know your chances are slim and you have a real good chance at being really disappointed.

you can still go high and have a good hunt if you put on some miles and hunt hard. As said, lots of pressure and not a ton of game, but still some good bucks in the unit. If you want to hunt lower elevations you will have a hard time finding land to hunt.
I have used mytopo.com for maps. you can make your own custom map and have it shipped to ya. Good luck

Have you found there to be bucks up in the high country?? Im guessing you are talking near the stuart range? Any roads that go up that way?

I have hunted that unit and the same area since 1996. We used to take bucks every year, but now I've had a dry spell of not harvesting one since 2007. There used to be a lot of deer in the unit, but hair-loss seemed to really have an impact on the population. It hasn't really rebounded to the numbers we were seeing in 2004-2005. We hunt high, but still encounter people. Get a topo map, find out the roads and trailheads and do some scouting.

its a great unit, just get a few draws over from a road and you'll run into animals.. seen a fair amount of deer everytime Im out there

That being said, I primarily hunt other gmu(s) because of....secret reasons.

I sent you a PM. Lots of good area over there. Like others said, got to get off the roads and put some miles on the boots to get away from the pumpkin patches.

hunted it last year during early archery and saw alot of good bucks. id hunt high if I was you.

I would also say go up high, not hard to find a doe but bucks are hard to come by.I hunted there the last 2 years and saw a few good bucks but few and far between.
