I've been excited for bear hunting since winter when a buddy at work told me he'd take me with him when he went in August. Previously I'd only hunted birds so this was my first time shooting the rifle in the field and my first time shooting any big game. We had hiked up about 3 miles and spotted a black bear across the valley. He stopped moving for a moment and we got the sticks set up and I got him in my sights and dropped him. He moved a bit more and I fired again, put him down for good. We got him packed up and skinned that night, first bear hunt, first bear!

Very Nice, Congrats!!

Nice.......looks like you got scope kiss too....... :chuckle: Post that picture for a good laugh.

Good stuff congratulations
-
Thank you guys, yeah it was a blast! I meant to give credit to D-Rock425 and h20hunter in my original post, they were my hunting buddies and helped me skin and clean the bear, that was a compleltely new experience for me. Not like cleaning birds! They taught me a ton about bear hunting this weekend. Yeah i got a good knock on the head from the scope on my second shot :chuckle:
-
 A nice bear and some good friends helping you out. Doesn't get much better than that.
-

nice bear
-
Scope kiss......don't think you are fooling anyone. That is where we had to smack you around a bit to get you to quit shaking enough to finally take a shot.
Nah, not really. You really hammered him. No bear for us tonight, just a stinky gut pile were we got yours out. Nice job getting it done.
-
awesome! first one feels great hu
-
Nice first bear! and even better yet, you'll always have that scar to remind you of it. I can only say this because I have never been guilty of scoping myself.... ;)
-
 great job you'll never forget it! great bear with nice color!

Congrats on your first bear!!

Naw, he decided to wrestle the bear to death--wins more points with the ladies :chuckle:
-
You did pretty good for your first big game animal.
-
That's a great 1st bear. Congrats!
-
congratulations on harvesting a nice bear for your first big game animal
-
I was with him win he shot. I set up the sticks for him told him to wait until he stops and turns broadside. When the bear stop he was 75 yards away and quartered away. I asked are you on him he gave me the yrs and I told him to shoot him right in the shoulder and down he went.
-
No no no no.....I was there and I stood in front of him so he could shoot off my shoulder. Once he missed the first three times I elbowed him in the head (hence the cut) to calm him down. Then, he took his final shot and connected with a texas heart shot that came out the bears nose.
Thats how it went down!
-
Nice job! A scope kiss is a badge of honor. Everyone knows what that means - first question I ask when I see someone walking around with one is "Did you get him?"
-
I joke and all but the boy did very well out there. Keep in mind this was his first day of big game hunting of any type. He did what you have to do...make the shot. I wish I would have been there but I was away a bit looking over different ground. I heard the boom of his -06 and then a follow up shot about 10 seconds later. I knew the first shot must have counted if the follow up wasn't very quick. When we dressed it out he did get one his slugs back which is pretty cool. I'll tell you what, this bear was hammered. No tracking needed. DRT baby! Scope kiss and all he did great out there.
-
Wow, super nice bear first time out congratulations
-
If this is his first Big Game animal where is the Blood? :o
-
We made him drink it.
-
:chuckle:
-
We emptied the bladder, filled it with blood, and threw it at him like a water balloon. We did talk about it but never got around to making him do anything like that.

Nice Job on your first! Way better to get your first Scope kiss on a kill than on a miss. You do realize that you are probably spoiled for life now though, bears don't usually come out to play every time you go out looking for them.
Great job!
-
Awesome, now you're hooked.
-
I am hooked on bear hunting now, it was an awesome trip, so much fun! When we get the slug cleaned up I'll have to put a picture of it up. Those two guys helped me a lot, definetly a blast! And the scope kiss does add to the memory! :chuckle: Thanks again everybody, I wish you all luck in your own bear and all other hunts!
They did make me drink the blood though...
no, not really.
-
Hey robcat why don't you tell them about the dieing quivers.
-
:yeah: This was unheard of to me until Saturday... No dying quivers for me thank you very much haha
-
With hundreds of animals over the last 30 years my first bear still reigns as my high point. That's when I knew I could beat the mosquitos, keep my drawers dry under stress and master the shot. It's going to be a fun ride from here on out.
You guys must be some tough SOB's to Indian pole that thing off the hill. We tried that with a bear and a deer when I was young and naive. Thought I was going to loose the whole right side of my body each time. Plus, the amount of unkind words being thrown around between the two of us was definitely unprofessional. It's got to be done at least once though. An experience to start the rest of your hunting life.
I'm extremely happy for you. Congratulations!!!
-
I packed out one bear on a pole about three miles once and never ever again.. my buddy was whinning he wanted it whole and when we got to the truck my shoulders were raw ... I do not think twice about now .. skin it - bone it and off ya go
-
Thank you RadSav! I appreciate it, it's definetly a extremly high point for me, very happy. Couldn't have done it without h20 and D-Rock, Indian poling that bear up the hill I shot him on and then down the mountain was a job I'll never forget, but so satisfying when we got him down and in the truck. It wore us out :chuckle:
-
My shoulder was so tired at the end of that, I'd definitely be ok if we skinned him first next time haha.
-
Sissy.....I only needed one hand on that thing all the way down the hill......hmmmm.....kids these days are just soft I guess?
-
nice looking bear. your hooked now. Rick ;)
-
That's right we be some tough SOB'S
-
I two-handed it down the mountain but I did have the back pack with tripod on... :IBCOOL:
-
:) A real man would have just made a back pack out of it and did it themselves. :chuckle:
-
Just when I thought I was THE man for getting my first bear :chuckle:
-
congrats
-
congrats buddy! looks like the scope left you with a nice little reminder of your first bear. looks like a cool place to hunt! oh, and be sure to bring your buddy a 6'er of barley pop.
-
There's one of the slugs that killed the bear
-
Cool picture
-
Great start to the fall. Well done!
-
Congrats on your first bear. I've tried that pole method for packing them out, was the last time I ever tried it. How did it work for you?
-
I can tell ya he did pretty well with the meat pole. He on one end, I on the other. We'd just pick it up, walk a bit, rest, repeat. Made pretty good time keeping up the rythm. We'll see if he thinks so as well. I remember he was getting a little worn out.
-
Kids these days there all soft.
-
I think we moved him pretty well, getting him uphill from where he fell was really the only hard part. Not a lot of good footing in there
-
Sweeeet  Way to go man. Got to love that. First bear on your first hunt. Dont stop now, keep'er rollin. Go and get a deer and an elk this year too. Pack that freezer and you can eat your free meet in front of the fireplace all comfy on your bear skin rug this winter....
-
Nice! Only a couple more weeks wait over here and then its game on!
-
So when are you going to go kill Bear #2? :chuckle:
-
We've got a few bears to go still before I go for another one :chuckle:
