I have decided to retire my old Rem 788 in .308 until I hand it down to one of my boys. Sooo, I will be in the market for a new rifle soon and want something bigger (read....more power....). I want to use it primarily as a bear gun and long range all around gun. What is everyones opinion on caliber?
Looking at going with a stainless steel Savage with this rifle but am open to opinions on that as well.
Lets hear it.
-
Oh and let it begin!
Tikka T3 .300 wsm for me! :whoo:
-
Define "long range"......
-
.408 Chey-Tac
-
.338 WM will take everything from deer to Grizzly Bear... Shoots flat as heck with 210 gr. bullets. Will knock elk flat at 400 yrds. If I could only have one hunting rifle, that would be it.
That said, there is so many what caliber threads on here, do some searching... everyone has a favorite, and reasons why... it is worse than the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Dodge threads.... :chuckle: :chuckle:

The .308 is pretty good cartridge. How much are you willing to pay for ammo???? :chuckle:
-
Any of the 300's wm wsm ultra all good guns and fits your wants pretty well.
-
Just get a 338 Lapua. Thread closed...........
-
Since you have a 308 and want something for long range, and an "all around" cartridge, I would have to say either the 7mm or the 300 Remington Ultra Mag. Yes you could go with one of the Short mags, but in my opinion you wouldn't be gaining significantly more "power" over the 308.
The 338 Win Mag that was already suggested wouldn't be a bad choice either.
-
My Savage Model 10 LE 308. Shoots 877 yards with hunting ammo. I like it !!!!!

7mm Mag! Nosler bullets. :twocents:
-
My Savage Model 10 LE 308. Shoots 877 yards with hunting ammo. I like it !!!!! :chuckle:
Point it at a 45deg angle and it will shoot farther then that LOL just because something shoots far doesn't mean anything. With the low energy at that range from a 308 I would never shoot a bear with at round at even close to that far.
-
I don't know about all those choices there guys.
I've heard that the 17 HMR is the one to beat, 1/2" groups at 1000 yards and can easily take down a charging Rhino at over 500 yards with one shot! Plus it doubles for home protection way better than any 12 gauge could even dream of.

How about you read the original post? He is looking for mainly a bear gun... what does your 308 and how far you can shoot it have to do with killing a bear and being a good cal for him to hunt bear with.
-
I won't even make a suggestion with such a vague request. :chuckle:
How much do you want to pay for ammo?
How much do you want to pay for the gun?
Long range? what is that?
Do you reload?
Are you going to alaska?
-
300 win mag best all around gun. perfect for long range on bear elk deer ....
-
how about the 30-378 shooting 180gr barnes tsx at 3360fps
or the 338-378 shooting 225gr barnes tsx at 3100fps
idk something about the weatherby always gets me.
-
Depending on your definition of long range,
will you be a turret twister/BDC or are we looking for MPBR?
How do you handle recoil?
How heavy do you like your rifle to be?
-
I dont think the .338 edge can be beat! :twocents:
300 grn bullets at 2900 fps!

it's already beat if he doesnt want to reload. ;)

Assuming that "long range" is just a little farther out there than you feel comfortable shooting game with the .308 Win (i.e. under 500 yards), then I'd say the .300 Win Mag or .338 Win Mag in the 116 Savage would fit the bill. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/ (http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/models/)
If you're talking over 500 yards then the Edge would be in order..........or maybe like Bobcat said, and go with an Ultra Mag. :twocents:

7 STW
284 win
8mm REM MAG
Need more info. :dunno:
whatever you go with, your probably on a good track looking at the savage.

I always love horsepower threads. Start with the basics. Budget, brand, weight, distance of shot, handload or not, recoil tolerance and that should narrow the field.
I love the guys that are sure a .308 will not kill a bear at 500yds....but my 30,000 ultra maxi plows em'. Truth be told, that .308 is a dang good all around choice, especially with todays bullets.

heck if ya feel you need to shoot into another time zone, get a 50 cal. :chuckle: buckhorn2 has a sweet shooter in .338
-
I was shooting steel just to let you guys know, not at any animal. I hope this makes some of you happy. :bfg:
-
For a bit more power than the .308, look at the .300wsm. More power and a wide variety of quality bullets to reload with. I think the 30-06 would fit what you are describing the best for an upgrade in power.

the headstamp is the least of my concern. I was an ultra mag guy for a long time, I found smaller rounds worked just as well. dead is dead, there is no "more dead" and those that "knocked it down like the hammer of thor" I believe are saying the same as my "bang flop".

I had a 300RUM and got rid of it.....ouch !! I personally use a 300 win mag T/C Encore.
-
What kind of bears? If you're hunting bears in Alaska, then just get the 338 Win Mag and be done with it. They do buck a little, so if you are sensitive to that, go with a 30-06. I'd personally stay away from anything with "ultra" in the name.
Kelly Johnson (Lockheed fame) once said that the perfect airplane is a crop duster. This from the guy who designed the SR-71.

something in .338 cal

You're looking at a Savage. Why pick just one caliber? Start with a 300 Win Mag and just go from there until one of them gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. A different barrel will cost you any where from $40-$600. Just try the all. That what I do. ;)

Can't go wrong with a .338 :twocents:

Lol to funny. I think your ideas get a little out of wack sometimes. But they are your ideas for a reason. If you think a 308 is a good long range all around gun that's just fine lol
-
Well lets see if I can answer a few of the questions thrown out there...I do reload, there is a very good chance I will end up in Alaska with this gun, long range to me is anything past 400 yards, I know the .308 is a great caliber because I have one, I like a light rifle but my 308 is rino lined and weighs a ton so weight isn't really an issue. My 308 does not shoot anything over 160 grains to my liking hence wanting to step up to something that will shoot a heavier bullet. I have been leaning towards either the 300wm or 338wm. Most people I have talked to say to avoid the ultra mag. Thanks for all of your advice and opinions.
-
Both would be fine choices. I have both and have shot bears with both. I prefer my 300 because of the fit of the rifle. I think most understand you wanting bigger then your 308 for what you are wanting to do with it. I shoot 180's in my 300 and 225's in my 338.
-
i also shoot 180 out of my 300 win mag . you will be very happy with a 300 .
-
Mallard79 have you shot much for mags? If not you might want to shoot both the 338 and 300 and see what you like and shoot well. If you post your location a member or to might let you shoot them and get a feel for them. I am in the very bottom middle of wa. I have both and you would be welcome to shoot them if you are in my area.
-
I think those are two good choices.
both will kill game way out there and are suitable for big bears in AK.
Since you reload you may like the 338EDGE as an option as well.
how about a 338-06. 1300ftlbs and 1700 fps at 700 yards should do the trick. lol.
you could also look into the .325WSM
-
If you are looking to go light, the 338 is going to bring a fair amount of recoil. I have many rifles and have had some very light very potent chamberings...the river boat paddle 338winnie was one that was a joy to carry and a pain to shoot. With a decent pad it makes a solid well priced choice. You will see many in Alaska. There are many 300 wsm offerings and most are quite solid. I think a Kimber Montana is as light as the layman can afford and tikka has a cheap offering that almost always seems to shoot well. I have not heard of many wsm that don't shoot well.
The 300 will not increase recoil too much in like rifles, the 338 is going to for sure. You are looking at 72ish grains of powder to burn, so it will let you know.
Long story short, both solid choices, less weight available to the wsm, more horsepower in the winnie.
-
If those big guns kick too much, put a muzzlebrake on it, or buy one with one. Then it'll be LOUD. Sacrifice, something I guess.
-
The 338 wm with a limbsaver isn't to bad to shoot.
-
Go with a classic. .35 Whelen.
Skook

Been watchin a couple pawn/gun shops locally the last few days. Nothing special poppin up yet. Anyboby shot the Savage modell 111 like the one mentioned already? How is the trigger since it doesnt have the adjustable accutrigger.$400 seems like a pretty good deal even if the scope is cheap. Is that trigger adjustable at all? I also saw that they have the remmington 770 combo for under $300. I bought my son a 770 in .243 and after working on the trigger it flat shoots great! Action is sloppy but what can you ecpect for under $300? How is the action on the savage? Might go look at them both tomorrow since they are 3 blocks from where i work. Who knows.....one may follow me home :dunno: :chuckle:
-
a savage will shoot better than most other factory guns regardless of price most days of the week. the floating head and good barrel are a wonderful match. they are ugly, chunky and 100x the gun the 770 is. there are loads of parts, they can be transformed into any caliber you want in minutes and thy are cheap for what you get.
as above, the 35 whelen is a great gun. I am looking for a nice cdl in 35w.
-
I sure like the .257 Weatherby mag now.
May never use my 7mm rem mag again.
-
If you're going to use the rifle in Alaska, I would look toward the 338-06, 338 WM, or 35 Whelen.

Here is a nice 338-06 Improved for sale: Link (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=245763372)
Here is a nice Weatherby Ultra Lightweight, but you probably would wish the guy left the scope off.......Link (http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=246283336)
Out of those 3 cartridges though, I think I'd lean toward the 338WM since you mentioned long range.

I just bought a 257 Mag Vanguard for wolf hunting. Your thoughts please. It's not put together, scope and Dednutz mount yet. Killed anything with it ?

100gr tsx and 72grs of rl22.....done.

NO kills yet but punching paper its awesome and if you read up on it, drops em fast.
Its a stainless mark V with 26" barrel and I shoot 120s out of it @ 74 bucks a box.
I will use first time in WY for antelope unless I see a bear or yote before archery elk season.

Cool beans... I bought Weatherby 110grn soft points for mine. 2 boxes from www.grafs.com (http://www.grafs.com) for $ 76 to the door. Those buggers are spendy. A friend shot a 5' saw blade @ 877 yards with his. I was impressed at the distance, but not for killing an animal. I don't know what grain would be the best, so keep me posted on your adventures with it. I can't wait to shoot it...
-
Yes I will
I hope to have some pics to post when I get back from WY
