Title: pellet rifles
Post by: jdb on June 18, 2008, 05:40:19 PM
anyone shoot a pellet rifle for pests? I been thinking Id like a pellet rifle for shooting pests near the houses. I have a sheridan silver streak, there are some pretty cool modes you can have done, but also thinking something I dont have to pump. JB

We have a Red Ryder propped up by the back porch -- stuff that legends are made of!  Couple o days ago a starling dared to perch by the bird feeder.  I popped him in the chest from about 20' through the sliding window & he rared back and hovered toward the trees.

With a RR, I think you have to shoot them in the eye.

I'd like to get a good gun like a Benjamin or a 1200 fps Gamo, so I can drop 'em good!

actionshooter, you might want to be careful about posting that on a public forum since rabbit's ARE a protected species. Just FYI

I bought a Gamo Whisper pellet rifle last year. I get groups of 1" at 40 yards as long as the barrel is clean. When shooting the gold ballistic pellets, they travel at supersonic speed around 1200 fps and actually have a crack to them almost as loud as a 22 long. Flickers like to drill on my house so I like to drill Flickers with it. There's probably a law against shooting them too but I'm not going to just let them destroy the outside of my house. What do you do?

I've got a gamo that shoots 1,000fps as well as a norinco that shoots about 600fps.
I've also got a very smooth benjamin single pump pistol that shoots ~400fps.

I use them on starlings and rats from time to time around the farm...but when possible I usually opt for one of my .22lr rifles, shooting either Aguila Colibris or CCI CB Longs. Either of the two pack at least twice the energy of the pellet rifles, but with half (or less) noise.

I gotta Gamo that shoots like 850.  It's OK for starlings and the like.  I'd actually like to upgrade though.  For whatever reason I just don't shoot the gun that well.  My buddy is death on wheels w/ it.  I only hit about 50% of the shots I take.

Must be the gun right?  :chuckle:

We have some nice pellet rifles for blasting pests....not long ago, my bro's and I went to a farm to take care of some rats with .22 bird shot and pellet rifles...it was a slaughter for about 3 hours.

Cant wait to get back once the rats regroup.

Yeah you're probably right, maybe "protected" isn't the right term, but yes they do have a season and they're not open yet. I don't have a problem with killing them. I was just saying I wouldn't be posting about doing something illegal on a public forum. But that's just me. It's about the same as posting that you killed a deer because it was eating your flowers. The thing is you dont' know who is reading what you type on here.

on this breeding ranch i worked at.. we had a huge barn rat problem. *censored*s were huge, and mean and not shy at all about jumping off a rafter as you pass by.. i just used some cheap o chinese 177 with those gold colored rapter gamo pellets i think.. they do fly fast.. shoulder shots  would kill them,, but would not anchor them. i didnt like it when they went back to the holes to die.. a lot of times i would ace one in the spine, and he would kick around in a little circle,, after a few mins of this, one of his rat *censored* pals would come over and try to eat him, and i would ace him too.. most i ever got in one stand was four.. damn rats.. cannibal *censored*s.. no loyalty to their own kind.some of those rats were real booners.

on this horse breeding farm i used to work on, they had a huge huge rat problem. the mexicans were horrible about leaving stuff out for them,, feeding the cat so it would not hunt.. some of those rats were huge huge.. and quite fearless. i used a cheap chinese 177 ... with the rapter gold pellets.. fast fliers for sure... you had to hit them in the head or neck.. body shots would only allow them to crawl back in the hole.. my fave tactic was to set up,, let one get in the middle of of the hall or stall,, ace em in the spine, and let em kick around a while.. sooner or later one of his rat *censored* buddies would come to nibble on him and try to eat em.. then i would ace him.. most i got from one set up like this was four.. pretty nice.. *censored*s, cannibals, showing no loyalty to their own kind...some of those rats were real booners. big old grain fed rats.

I have a Gamo that is advertised to shoot around 850FPS, I wouldn't swear to it, but it sure knocks the hell out of rats, possums and raccoons.
