Title: How to catch Puyallup humpies and how to tie a rig
Post by: Cap.Silver on August 18, 2011, 08:54:00 PM
I don't consider myself being an fishing expert or anything ,just want to help fellow folks ....maybe some of you do things other ways ,this is my way to do things -feel free to comment if you want or give better info ....
As you know fishing for humpies is great on Puyallup river right now .....so I wanted to show you how to rig things up best for humpies ....
a/I'm using 20-25lbs test line on my reel .... follow the pictures : first put a sliding rig or simple swivel on the line and behind put little bead ,then tie a swivel .Some guys like to use sliding plastic rigs ,metal or cheap swivel .I use 3/4OZ lead cannon balls ,or pencil lead (depending on how fast current is ,depth etc. adjust to your liking ) .
For leader I try to stay with 5-6 feet maximum length -using 12-15lbs test line .I use #1 or 1/0 BARBLESS (see rules)
hooks with simple eggloop knot ,cut 1" - 1 1/2" of yarn ,put in eggloop and pull. After that I put #10 or 12 corkie online ,put toothpick through it to secure close to the hook and cut off the excess making sure not to cut the line . Try to tie at least 10 leaders and keep them in leader vallet for faster tying .
Tight lines and good luck ...I saw already 2 king in the 15-17lbs range pulled out of the river

20-25lb test?! sweet jesus!!!

anyway the puyallup has been pretty decent so far this year. not huge numbers like '09 but still averaging 50 fish landed a day. also everyday im seeing a few more silvers caught but nothing with any size yet around 3-5lbs. and around 5 or so kings.

Orange and red is working best for you?  Have you tried other colors?  Have you tried pink yarn and corkie?

Just my input, but if you are specifically targeting the Pinks, they yes, pink yarn with pink corkie will work well.  But I use orange and red in my top five color combo for silvers and the pinks will hit that as well.  So, if you want to up your chances of hooking a silver, orange and red will work well and you will still slay the pinks!  :twocents:

Great input guys ,and yes I do use other colors too -black,white,green etc. depending on the fish type. I use the 20-25 test because when I snag I loose only the leader ,not the main line and yes to bring them in if the guy next to you is standing about 1' away and ...... but there is so much fish you don't really have to be angry if you loose bunch .Sometimes I add some scent to the yarn -only when I'm desperate  :chuckle: and fish isn't biting . C-money -just hit me with e-mail and  we can meet over there - weekends are really crazy down there .... at least where I go ..... Gasman might be able to join us this week I hope -he couldn't make it last thursday .

I've been on vacation since Friday night and have been fishing since then. My oldest son and I have been limiting out with 32 fish caught. I love being on vacation and out of the water with in 2 hours each day and home in 20 min. By the way the I have caught 4 silvers in the last 2 days.

Can someone PM me with a place to take my boy pink fishing? from the bank? we live in SW wa and i don't want to drive to the north end rivers. I used to fish the snoho/sky system.
Maybe the Puy???

I am in the same boat....wanted to take my 2 boys (10 and 8) over for some humpy fishing...... but was told that fishing from the bank with kids isn't a good idea due to the crowds and the patients level of most of the fisherman.......Too bad, I would like to take my boys.....but I guess it wont happen......

I never let what other people say keep me and my boy off the river. Never had to find reasons not to go, just did it. My boy is full grown now and doesn't fish with the old man nearly enough. It's all good, my first grandson was born two days ago and when he's old enough to get out we'll own any river with fish left in it.

Get them kids some nice fitting life jackets and get them on the water.  8)

Half of the fun in fishing is teaching others how to do it, your kids are plenty old enough! Teach them how to cast in the yard at home so they have some familiarity with the gear they will be using and make a game out of them aiming for something in the yard. Once they start to figure out the aiming part, take them fishing! I never heard of anyone getting crazy pissed over humpies anyway?

The best thing about havin the kids out on the water, the respect level rises for every one around you. My kids have the best time on the water catching Pinks. Most of the time they are out fishing me once they get it figured out.
So far on the puke since Friday we have take 42 pinks and 4 silvers that's with my kids wanting to keep every think they catch, and that's why I'm a little more selective on keeping female pinks and coho.

I rig in a similar fashion except I like to slide a piece of yarn into the last wrap as I pull the egg loop knot tight. This pins the yarn permanently in the knot.

Sometimes a 12 foot leader is the ticket.  :chuckle:

Ok...maybe i should have been a little more clear.....My boys fish with me all the time....For kings this year they are both almost got full punch cards.....but that is over here on the eastside of the state.....where people are not lined up shoulder to shoulder...... and you can still get away from any crowd....if you can actually find a crowd......lol

What I was talking about was just the humpies.....I have never been myself....and was wanting to take them if I go....cause they are my fishing partners and I don't go without them......but the issue is, from the stories I have heard on here and other forums.....that the rivers on that side are not kid friendly.....I don't know, never been.....just figured the humpies would be great fun for kids......faster than kings.....and more of a do it them self type thing.... but I don't know about it after seeing the pictures posted with people standing three deep or shoulder to shoulder......I mean is there a place over there to take kids where they don't have to combat fish????? Guess that is a little more understandable......

I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you are keeping an eye on them as opposed to inflicting them on other fishermen I think you will be fine. Combat fishing may be the order of the day though, I've never seen so many boats or bank fishermen on the Snohomish before!

FWIW, if someone raises a fuss over a humpy they lost that they figure your kid might have some part of they probably need to be held under water for a few minutes to help them cool off :) There are just way too many of them and they are so easy to catch that there is just no point in getting pissed about a lost fish.

Hunting-Washington should have a evening of humpy fishing some evening this week.  If folks wanted to have it on a weekend I will be scouting some elk areas.   But it would be fun to hear the comments.

I'm in but may I suggest a rule: Barbie poles only, right out of the pkg, no modifications.

Spiderman or other confirmed heterosexual superhero poles are considered valid substitutions.

We will be up there saturday sept. 3rd. We are staying in morton, and the drive is only an hour. I am just looking for a spot on the river for 2 boys 12, and 13 to catch a few fish.
My son has about a 100 summer steelhead under his belt, all plunking. So this drift fishing will be fun for him.
I have never fished the Puke before so maybe a point in the right direction would be appreciated.

Yes the river always looks like Puke! Only when it starts cooling down in the mountains will the water lighten up!  Like I said in a previous post the river is kind to those that have kids and the respect level rises! I have 3 boys and I take my 2 oldest with me and they have a blast!
Here's some pics.....

Good job getting your kid out there IRem.  I've been out a number of times and even with fishing a few hours after work i'm still able to constantly bring home fish, even if i'm not limiting out, but then again i'm after the hens and eggs.
***Side note for anyone who does not fish eggs.  If someone fishing next to you request some eggs after they see you tossing then, or just ask "do you by chance keep the eggs?" be polite!  I was out last week and ask a guy if i could have his eggs after i saw him simply tossing he eggs and he told me to fuc& off and then squished all of his eggs followed by violently throwing his eggs back into the water .  Good news was that i came home with 4 hens filled with eggs and just about everyone else fishing gave me there eggs after witnessing this poor sportsman ship and i'm still curing up eggs from that day :chuckle:.  But really that was uncalled for and a simple no would have sufficed.
