Title: Ultrasonic Cleaner
Post by: vmkeith on August 21, 2011, 06:37:25 AM: I've got an ultrasonic cleaner that I'm thinking of using for two things...cleaning smaller gun parts and cleaning brass. I've done searches for what to use for cleaning gun parts and brass, and all I really came up with was brass cleaning. The general consensus is to use distilled water, white vinegar, and a drop or two of dish soap (optional). After cleaning, immediately put the brass in a water/baking soda solution to neutralize the vinegar. Then put it through a standard tumbler to get that nice shine.

For all you guys that use ultrasonic cleaners, does this sound about right?

The other part of that is for cleaning gun parts. I've read that it does wonders for the BCG. What would be a good cleaning recipe for gun parts, besides just getting the Hornady One Shot stuff.

I have never tried it on brass, but it is the best thing since sliced bread when it come to cleaning Gun parts. Especially if you have a Ultrasonic cleaner that is heated. I have been using the same 1 gallons jug of concentrate for about 4 years now. I use this thing for every thing, I probably should clean it more often but I haven't seen a whole lot of decreased performace by not cleaning as often. I usually end up cleaning it when it gets so full of gunk that it is covering the parts as I put them into the basket. The nice thin about the solvent that I use (Heavy Duty Degreaser Concentrate under the Solvent-Free Water-Based (Aqueous) Solutions) is there is no neutralisation of the solvent when you are done. Just rinse it under warm running water & blow dry with an Air Compressor.. It comments in the info about a possibly discoloring Aluminum I have put at least 40 Ar-15 receivers through it & never had any problem. I am "Cooking" one right now trying to get all the Krylon off that some body had layered on supper heavy years ago & slowly but surely it it cumming off perfectly... The only issue is that there is some much cumming off I will have to clean it for sure when I am done...

Post by: vmkeith on August 26, 2011, 05:00:25 PM: I'm lovin' the ultrasonic cleaner. I used it to clean the BCG on my AR15 today using the Lyman cleaning solution...all I can say is wow. I like to take my time when I'm cleaning any of my firearms, and what usually takes me 1-1.5hrs on the BCG alone, only took 30min to clean...without all the mess. Next I'll try cleaning all my once fired brass.
