Title: Fletching colors
Post by: TikkaT3-270Shortmag on August 25, 2011, 02:42:25 PM
What color combos are you guys using? Any colors you think work better than others? Last yr I did 2 white and one pink.  Going to pick up some arrows tomorrow.  Never done a wrap kinda curious if they help much.

2 pinks and 1 white with a white wrap.  Not very good camo but you can really see the arrow fly and find it easily, too.  The bubbles in the blood on the wrap was really easy to see.

I change mine up depending on the batch of arrows so I can keep track of them sort of like a load for a weapon.  I usually use two darks and a white or bright color.

the set I shoot now is (2) white and (2) orange. Like Bone I tend to change them by the batch so I know how old my arrows are, but I almost always have (2) white fletchings and rotate the second color.

2 yellow 1 orange with camo orange wrap. I like orange. And camo. And wraps. Pink and white will never work. Throw them away!

Ok that brings up a good point. I still have 3 arrows from last year and wanted to refletch the same as my new arrows. Should I leave them how they are. Does it really matter what arrow is the oldest if it shoots good?

I like the blue nock bowman. Do you cover your fletchings  when hunting?

Always like a wrap, one with white is best. My fave combo us white and Orange for most of my hunting arrows. I also like a bright yellow and use them a lot on mt trad bows.

I use the same tiger stripes as bowman but don't do the wraps (affects the FOC and effective spine).  I usually buy 2 colors (36 packs), typically yellow and orange.  Would fletch 2 of one color and 1 of the other (would choose the 2 fletchings for that batch of arrows based on which box had the most fletchings so I would end up using up both boxes at about the same time eventually).  So with one batch they would be two yellow and one orange and the next batch would be two orange and one yellow.  That would naturally change the color from season to season.  The yellow and orange are relatively easy to see when they get down range.  I have to admit that my bow shoots so fast, I hardly see the arrow flying except at long distances :P.

The orange and yellow do kill more deer, but not so good for elk. :(

Do you guys cover the feathers when hunting?  I had a guide in Africa claim the only thing that spooked the animals were my bright fletchings.  I attacked them with a black sharpie at the time, and have hunted with black and red ever since.  Anybody else noted that the fletching color matters in the quiver?  Very nice for watching the arrow, but can be bright when there are 4 - 6 in a row in the quiver.

Black and red are some of the most camo of the colors believe it or not.  Sometimes painfully so if you are trying to find your arrow after a pass through.

Never cover them for that.   Have had issues in nasty rain or wet slot.   That will change your trajectory a ton!

I used to use an arrow cover booty I made myself.  Forgot to take it off once and all my fletchings were bent over.   :chuckle:  I really have not noticed if the bright fletchings hurt or not.  Normally my problem is shifting wind or noisy ground that gives me away.   :bash:  This is the first time I am using wraps though.

I was shooting these before.

I cover my arrows in my hip quiver and only leave one out. For hunting i can not stand dark colors. Target shooting is one thing, but in a hunting situation finding your arrow can mean the difference in finding out if you hit the animal or not. So bright colors are a must on all my hunting arrows

pianoman stole my thunder.  I used pink and white almost identical to yours and shot a really nice buck in AZ last year.  I don't care what kinda crap I get from my buddies about it - I'm not changing anything.

And I'd put the tutu on if it meant killing a nice bull every year.  People can say whatever they want as I load my bull into the back of my pickup.

Okay, I'm still kinda new to archery.  What are wraps and what's their purpose?

A wrap is a piece of plastic that wraps around the arrow shaft. Then you attach your vanes or feathers to them. There is a few advantages to using them. 1 they help the vanes bond to the arrow better.2 they help you see the arrow in flight. 3 they help you find your arrow. 4 they help show blood and other material on your arrow. So that you know the quality of your hit on the animal.

:yeah: and 5. Adds a little weight (could be good or bad) 6. Makes it look pretty

I have noticed that most of the arrows that I find after a shot I see the nock first; therefore I like a bright colored nock. Also florescent green (similar to sight pin color) seem to stand out well.

Unless it's total BS, I believe that the 2" vanes spin at a faster rate with less drag and are more designed for sorter, carbon shafts. Longer vanes are more suited to larger diameter carbon and aluminum shafts. So, am I full of it or what? Anyone?
Title: Re: Fletching colors
Post by: halflife65 on August 26, 2011, 03:11:50 PM
I'm not sure if they spin faster but they are supposed to have less drag and allow your arrow to travel faster.  I've shot 4" fletching and 2" Blazers and they both flew well from my bow.  If there is a difference in speed it's not enough for me to have to move my sight.

Post by: Elkslayer on August 26, 2011, 03:20:42 PM
I shoot a 31" Carbon Express Maxima 350, I have noticed that the 2" Blazer vanes have better penetration than the ones fletched with 4" vanes. So my guess is that they do have less drag.  :twocents:

What works is what shows up well to your eyes and in the conditions. For example white isn't good when there is snow on the ground. And yellow is a bad choice if aspen or cottonwood leaves are blanketing the ground. Lately (and until I run out of them) I am using yellow hen feathers, a purple cock feather and yellow nocks. I also like red hens with a white cock feather and white nock. I've never used pink feathers but some of my happy buddies do and those things really show up well. My arrow shafts are natural spruce, fir or cedar so they show up on the ground pretty well and so I don't choose to dip them. If I were shooting black shafts I'd sure as heck dip them or put a brite colored wrap on them.
