HEY,  I KNOW A COUPLE OF PLACES AROUND HERE,  I HAVEN'T HUNTED YET,... BUT I HAD SOME LOCALS TELL ME WHERE TO GO.  NOT VERY MANY BIRDS,  BUT THERE IS SOME.  I BUSTED A COVEY OF ABOUT 30 BIRDS THIS WEEKEND,... BUT IT WAS IN AN AREA THAT HUNTING ISN'T ALLOWED.  ACTUALLY THE FUNNY THING IS THE ONLT PLACES I'VE SEEN CHUKAR AROUND HERE ARE PLACES YOU CAN'T HUNT  :bash:  :bash:  I WILL CHECK OUT SOME PLACES IN THE COMING WEEKENDS THAT HUNTING IS ALLOWED IN AND SEE WHAT I CAN SPOT.

SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN TO ME.  I STILL NEED TO DO QUITE A BIT OF SCOUTING TO LACATE SOME BIRDS WHERE I CAN ACTUALLY HUNT THEM,  LOL  I KNOW SOME SPOTS THAT WOULD REQUIRE ABOUT AN HOUR OR TWO OF DRIVING,.. MOSTLY TO THE WEST OF US.  I WANTED TO CHECK OUT THE EASTERN SIDE OF US,.. AROUND CLARKSTON  :)

No I live by Spokane. I got a lab, and neither of has have truly hunted a bird before. This will be our first year. Unfortunately there wasn't much public land around that area anyhow, so I will have to get back down there to do some door knocking!

Hey Biginner

If you jumped two separate coveys anywhere close to the Tri-Cities, you did very well.  We've lost so much good ground to development and fires in the last 40 years around here that finding one good covey is very special.  I have several places that I hunt fairly close that have a few birds and I treat them like gold!!  First rule...Tell no one!  Second rule...don't hit them too often and don't go for a limit, ever!  30 - 40 birds don't go a long way when you figure predators, other hunters, bad weather, or a long winter.  I've probably grown old, but any more, I love watching my dog do the hunting and if I manage a bird, I've made the day even more successful.  I was out one day late last year about 20 miles from home and managed a chuckar and bonus hun.  Lilly made great points on both coveys (at that point only 3 chukars and 6 huns left in each covey) and that made probably my best hunting day for the year.  It was pretty late in the season at that point, so I didn't hit that area again.  I haven't been up there looking yet, but hopefully the remaining birds had a good hatch this year.

Over the last week or two I'be seem tons of chukar, but one thing that caught my eye is that there were about 6 coveys if about 30 birds each, but about 80% of those burds were very young,  most of them didn't even have all their feathers yet....  Is this do to a late hatch? Or a second hatch?

Biginner,
There was a late hatch on Chukars and Quail this year.  I was over near Clarkston last weekend and saw 2 big coveys of Chukars and all the babies were smaller than Softballs.  Late, late hatch this year.
