Went bear hunting over the weekend, found a nice clearcut with good amount of berries around. I set up behind a pile of old tree roots and sat for about 30 minutes before i started calling. I used a Primos Jackrabbit distress call. I called off and on for about 70 minutes and i had nothing. Not even a coyote. It was around 0820 in the morning when i first set up. It just stinks that i didnt call in anything. Any advice for a beginner? Good predator calls you might use?

Remember the stump you sat on. Go back, sit on it some more. This is my second season hunting and I FINALLY saw a bear while hunting. Not gonna happen first time out usually (no comments RobcatBobcat).

1. Is there fresh sign of bears in the area? Tracks? Bear poop? Torn up rotting logs?
2. Any ripe berries?
3. Get in there earlier. Be in place prior to sunrise. Or just after. Emphasis on prior to. Sit still and watch.

I personally haven't had much success with calling bears as I have with watching large areas with good food source and stalking them

We have had a lot of great result with calling. You might make 1 stand or 5 or 10 or 20 before you call in a bear. We have called in bears on a avg of about 1 in 12 stands. We are not hunting in a hugely populated areas but there are some bears. A lot of people do just what you are doing. Make a stand or two and give up or get frustrated. It takes a lot of time and stands to produce results. It's not a easy thing and 99.9% of the time you will have to make multiple stands to produce anything let a lone a bear.

Also most of our bear stands are around 45-1hr. Depending on the area it could be a little longer or shorter. Figuring out a calling series and amount of time between is a lot of calling for the bears and cats. Sounding good makes a lot if difference. Learn to call yotes well and calling bears and cats will become easier. That way you know your calling sounds right. Also Target the kind of pray animal they might be eating. If there is no rabbits maybe a fawn call or elk call will work better.
