Title: Would you kill him?
Post by: buglin4bulls on August 31, 2011, 07:19:17 PM: Looks like a 2 year old Blackie... Dont know if i should whack him or not. What you guys think?? Im leaning on just letting him walk. Hardly enough meat on him worth killing for

I won't kill spikes anymore, but 2 point would cause me to debate the issues in my head before I could decide.......most likely he'd be gone before I made my mind up one way or the other...... :)

Even if I had my bow, I'd probably try my best to hold off if it was the first week of the season. I really want to spend more hunting time than that, unless it's a really good buck.

Post by: sticky on September 01, 2011, 03:33:08 PM: Yes, if 1.) he is not in some deep ass ravine to pack him out of, 2.) if I have not seen one single buck all season, 3.) none of my buddies have killed anything larger, and 4.) he's made up of 80% backstrap, and the rest jerky and some lovely sausage.

Otherwise, Mr. Babyfork gets a pass until next year.

If he was where I hunt it would just be another buck that will grow until next year. 3 point or better unit. And we have seen a big improvement on the size of bucks since it has started.

You can't really brag about shooting a forked horn, and a doe is as good if not better eating than that little buck. I have not gone a year without shooting a deer (except the ones I have not hunted) so I am not worried about "tag soup".

I think someone needs to do some reading on blacktail ..... not whitetail but blacktail and I better round up some pictures of some of these 200 pound blacktail I have seen killed which most likely never gotten any bigger than a 2 pt. and I AM NOT SAYING ALL OF THEM DO NOT GET BIGGER BUT I also know alot of them do not !!! I round up some pictures of some long time 2 pts :chuckle:

This one was a 2pt a couple years ago ... :chuckle:

The buck in the original photo is a young deer and it is impossible to say what a little age will turn him into......

Did you watch him make the rub? Or did you find the rub and then hunt over it?

I watched a blacktail buck from the time that it was a fawn be raised on a farm. When it was 1 1/2 years old it was a spike, when he was 2 1/2 he was a 2x1, when he was a 3 1/2 he was a 2x2, when he was 4 1/2 he blew up into a 120" 4x4 plus eye guards. When he was 5 1/2 - 7 1/2 he was a 4x4 plus eye guards that pushed 130 or better each year. When he was 8 1/2 he reverted back to a 2x1 and was shot by a hunter.

I hunt modern firearm and only have two weekends total in my area. I only get to take one three day weekend to hunt because of work and finances, so I have to get it done in a hurry. The second factor is would shooting him make you happy? I was raised to look at any legal buck as a trophy, so I would be happy with that deer. So, yes, I would shoot him. Think about those two things and make up your own mind. Good luck out there!
