Looks like a 2 year old Blackie... Dont know if i should whack him or not. What you guys think?? Im leaning on just letting him walk. Hardly enough meat on him worth killing for
-
:hunter:
-
Nope! But I would in a few years. :twocents:
-
:hunter:
:yeah:
-
I would pass if it was me :twocents:, I bow hunt and have a 3 point rule I can always get a doe to fill my tag let him grow however if I had never shot I buck I would take him in a heart beat.
-
Let him walk unless the freezer is totally empty, then I'd have to really debate it. I won't kill spikes anymore, but 2 point would cause me to debate the issues in my head before I could decide.......most likely he'd be gone before I made my mind up one way or the other...... :)
-
let him walk
-
Since your in King county i'd kill the doe in the pic or wait for a nice one. :twocents:
-
Good one for the girlfriend or daughter!

:dunno: yea cus nice bucks are born big and are never 2pts. to start :bash:
-
The freezer is my main goal, any deer with meat is a shooter in my book.
-
If you would be happy to shoot that buck then by all means shoot him! im just saying i wouldnt......
-
LET HIM GROW! From the pic it looks like he has a solid frame easy 6 pointer in a few years. The midwest has big deer because they understand management littles become BIGS. Fill your freezer with a doe!
-
:hunter: Bust him in the head as to not ruin any meat..Nice young tasty dude

You bet ya tony! Same with the Cow with calf situation, she is dead to me already :chuckle:
-
looks like nice freezer size to me..
-
:archery_smiley:
-
Nope
-
Depends, if it is a shoot now or he runs situation I let him run. If he hangs out and gives me too long to think about it he is dead.
-
wackem its better to put meat in the freezer .then have tag soup later .and kiking your self in the but for not taking it. :twocents:
-
That screams jerky, pepperoni, and breakfast sausage all day!! If I had yet to kill a buck, I'd whack him, if not I'd hold out for the last few days or so before laying him down.
-
This year I'd have to pass on that one, unless I was hunting with my bow, or unless it was the last day of the season.
Even if I had my bow, I'd probably try my best to hold off if it was the first week of the season. I really want to spend more hunting time than that, unless it's a really good buck.
-
Yes, if 1.) he is not in some deep ass ravine to pack him out of, 2.) if I have not seen one single buck all season, 3.) none of my buddies have killed anything larger, and 4.) he's made up of 80% backstrap, and the rest jerky and some lovely sausage.
Otherwise, Mr. Babyfork gets a pass until next year.
-
Nope not on the first day this year. If it was the last day and legal to shoot a 2 point, then he would be down this year because I want some sauage and jerky!
If he was where I hunt it would just be another buck that will grow until next year. 3 point or better unit. And we have seen a big improvement on the size of bucks since it has started.
-
It's got to be a doe or a huge buck. You can't really brag about shooting a forked horn, and a doe is as good if not better eating than that little buck. I have not gone a year without shooting a deer (except the ones I have not hunted) so I am not worried about "tag soup".
-
sure would be tastey

I think someone needs to do some reading on blacktail ..... not whitetail but blacktail and I better round up some pictures of some of these 200 pound blacktail I have seen killed which most likely never gotten any bigger than a 2 pt. and I AM NOT SAYING ALL OF THEM DO NOT GET BIGGER BUT I also know alot of them do not !!! I round up some pictures of some long time 2 pts :chuckle:
This one was a 2pt a couple years ago ... :chuckle:
-
here is one my niece shot with me last year .. this deer was at least 3yrs old ...still a 2 pt ... look at the body size .... I find ya some real big ones !
-
All just thought of this one .... O.K How big of a deer has done this ? :dunno:
-
I will continue once I hear some comments .... :hello:
-
:chuckle:

I dont disagree that alot of blackies never get any better than a two point. That doesnt mean that it would be a good idea to "whack all those two points" because even that dandy 4 you posted was probably a two point at some point. The buck in the original photo is a young deer and it is impossible to say what a little age will turn him into......

BH 45 I'm guessing that tree is 8in in diameter? so mabe a 3 point? your neices 2 pt that was 3yr old was pretty big so it could be possilb e that a rutted up 2 point did that... :dunno:

Did you watch him make the rub? Or did you find the rub and then hunt over it?
-
I dont believe that BS "once a spike always a spike" or "he will never be better than a 2pt". I watched a blacktail buck from the time that it was a fawn be raised on a farm. When it was 1 1/2 years old it was a spike, when he was 2 1/2 he was a 2x1, when he was a 3 1/2 he was a 2x2, when he was 4 1/2 he blew up into a 120" 4x4 plus eye guards. When he was 5 1/2 - 7 1/2 he was a 4x4 plus eye guards that pushed 130 or better each year. When he was 8 1/2 he reverted back to a 2x1 and was shot by a hunter.
-
Early season no, but late season yes.
-
If you or whoever takes that deer is happy with it then take it...... I passed up a bunch of small bucks last year.... Took a doe last day..... To each your own....
-
I think whether or not you shoot him depends on two main factors. The first is how much time you get to hunt. I hunt modern firearm and only have two weekends total in my area. I only get to take one three day weekend to hunt because of work and finances, so I have to get it done in a hurry. The second factor is would shooting him make you happy? I was raised to look at any legal buck as a trophy, so I would be happy with that deer. So, yes, I would shoot him. Think about those two things and make up your own mind. Good luck out there!
-
Ive let him walk at 40 yards 2 nights in a row. Not letting the multi season deer tag make soup this year though
-
Private land =let him walk
Public land =If its brown its down.
