Title: Grouse Season 2011:
Post by: Ellensburg on September 01, 2011, 09:26:00 PM
Lets start gettin pictures/stories.

I went out with my girlfriend today and managed to get 2 nice blue grouse. Let my dog try to retrieve them. He caught an injured one and retrieved one. He is definitely improving.

Saw about 10 grouse in total.

Most big game hunters really have "grouse camp" as that's usually what most people see and or actually shoot at. It just sounds more bad-ass to call it deer camp, elk camp, or bear camp.  :chuckle:

Sorry, I did not take a picture......We rode in on ATV trails and had a great day. about 12 miles in, in a more open area I saw two doves fly by and lite in a pine tree. So I stop, told my buddy "I am gonna try for one of those." So I grab my H&R composite stalk 12ga & walk towards the tree, got to about 20 yards or so and the doves flush. I focased on one of them and fired. Both doves fell, Cool! Through out the day we blasted one grouse and rode 70+ miles. Oh ya.....we saw 1 spike bull, and 30+ cows being tended to by a 6x8, huge bull. We watched the bull work his cows for some time, he even came with in 100 or so yards a few times. I was kicking my self for forgetting my camera! Most cows were laying up on the side of a hill, but he seemed to be looking for a hot cow. He even let out a grumbely growel at one point. Awesome day.

I took  my dog out on his first "real" hunt today. He flushed 3 , all at different times, but I was only able to shoot one. The others flew in to some thick timber and I had no shot. So for his first time out he didn't do too bad. He flushed the first one with in 15 minutes of getting out of the truck, I thought we would get our limit. Maybe next time.

I went to what I consider the best ruff draw in the state tonight and never saw a bird. Usually in the 30's. Bad bad deal here in NCW as far as grouse go.

I was out kicking bushes yesterday morning.  One flushed behind me but I had no shot.  Heard another one but never saw him.  Saw a couple of nice rabbits but I'm not interested in those kind of bunnies. Will be trying out some other spots.

Went out yesterday afternoon and this morning. Hunted out several trails/skid roads and all I saw was a rabbit and a grouse that had been eaten by something not long before i walked up on it. Seems like another slow year for me!

Scouted for deer and bear all day hoping to flush some birds too. Nothing. Got back to "the cabin that never was" and packed up, changed out of my camo and into my comfy-driving-over-the-pass-clothes, and put all the gear away. FC walked to the edge of the hill to have one last "rest stop" and I hear him loudly intruct me to "bring your shotgun! Quick!" I run over to my truck, unzip the shottie case, hastily grab a coupla shells, and briskly walk over to where he is standing. He points down hill about 15yards and I shot my first Blue Grouse. I thanked him for calling in my bird for me - the sound of a zipper apparently does the trick fairly well!  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Just shows ta go ya - it's never over 'til it's over.

Hunted hard for two days with my brother. Didn't see much. Did see the what looked like the worlds largest blue grouse. It flushed up into a tree and then as we approached, flew away, too far to get a shot. My brother did get this ruffy.

Spent the 1-5th hunting grouse in the morning and deer in the late afternoon/evening, was not real hopefull for groue considering the cold spring/summer we had in my area and the lack of grouse i had heard/seen during my time scouting/cutting wood.
After hitting the usual "spots" that during good years produce limits in the first hour and not seeing a whole lot we hit some "new" ie never had to hunt them before draws and found some birds, figured out what they were eating and the side of the mountain they liked and the hunting got pretty good, was able to put a few in the cooler every morning after that.
The deer hunting was also promising, did not notch my tag, saw bucks everyday, 4x4 & basket 3x3 (not counting eye guards) opening evening hunt but could not get closer than 80yrds, doe's that i let walk, a lone spotted fawn i saw every day and started to feel sorry for it, a broken horn buck that has the broken spike still attached to hide and bothering him, would shake his head every few mintues, i named him floopy the wonder buck LB really wanted me to take him and was trying really hard to get me to hunt him, i said if he is still around come late season maybe  ;)  and had a nice 3x3 at 22yds that busted me when i started to draw (my fault i should have waited).
Going back over the 16th-25th or when i tag out...should get some more grouse then...

Nice! Thanks for the report. I was thinking about you guys yesterday and wondering how it went. Glad to hear there are birds around. I have plans to hunt the Twisp area on sunday and hope to hike up to the ridge above our place on Tonasket maybe monday morning. I'm told there are birds up there so we'll see. Still looking to find good grouse areas closer to the ranch so, maybe this is it.

Just got back from an evening/morning hunt near Cle Elum.  3 flushes/6 birds seen, a couple shots, nicked one.  My setter had a good time and so did I.  At least we saw some birds.   He even flushed a flock of turkeys above me, two of which flew right over me.  I tried hard to turn them into blue grouse, but to no avail.    :bash:

Hunted south of Cle Elum, kicked up 6 birds, only got a shot at one of them and missed. I am in complete depression.  :chuckle:

What I did notice though is that the blues are lower on the slopes a bit and they are hugging the timber because of the heat. And it is dry out there.  Awfully dry.

Good hunting on Sunday with ya there, Heartsblood. I've been trying to get a better ID on those birds since we got back. The one bomber that I got on Saturday was definitely a Blue. A Blue male at that. As soon as I heard the "thump" when he hit the ground, I knew he was a big Blue.

I've been searching for some good ID information and pics and the best that I could find is this one:
http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/ifwis/huntplanner/biggame.aspx?id=10 (http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/ifwis/huntplanner/biggame.aspx?id=10)

Spruce grouse or Blue?? It's really tough to tell the difference between young birds if they are both female. Pretty sure that they were females. Did you notice any combs above the eyes? It appears that the Spruce have a bit more white on the belly feathers than the Blues. Mature Blues will always be larger than Spruce. Regional differences may also make ID'ing difficult if we try to compare western birds with eastern.

Friday I bagged a smallish bird because I was starting to think this year was like the last and I may not get another shot at one. Since it appears there are a lot of birds out there, I decided to be picky and only take the biggest. What a welcome change from last year!
Title: Re: Grouse Season 2011:
Post by: Heartsblood on September 14, 2011, 10:27:27 AM
Thanks for the link netcoyote! Yes these were all nearly mature females - no comb, but almost completed tailfans. The only thing I see that consistently shows up on images of both spruce and blue females is the color of the area just above the eye - most pictures show blues with a yellowish "eyeshadow" and spruces with a reddish shade. I don't think this shaded area is actually the "comb" but I could be wrong.

It was great to meet ya (and Boomer!) sunday. I had an awesome time. We should do it again sooner than later. And let's talk turkey when it gets closer too  ;).

I also really enjoyed meeting you Hartsblood!

Both of the grouse I took this weekend were Spruce grouse.  Beautiful birds with black feathers, white accent feathers and brilliant red eye combs.  I noticed that one of these birds were walking around with their tail erect and fanned, like a strutting turkey.  I'd never seen that behavior before in the field.  Always something new to learn....

With the wet spring and late summer we've had this year I was pleasantly surprised to see as many Grouse as I did on my last outing.  I took my Single Six along while checking my game cam sets and looking for Bear sign, as it is a bit too thick good shotgunning, unless I just wanted to do some tree pruning.  It was pretty crunchy out so getting back into the cover they were holding in was tough and getting a clear shot was even more difficult.  Managed to make the shots I had count - all neck shot.  This one I thought I missed as he thundered skyward at the sound of the shot.  At about 6' in the air his motor stopped and fell back to earth DRT.

There were plenty of Fajitas to go around.  Looks like it'll be a good year.
