I have great respect for a hunter not willing to take a shot if he's not within the comfort and shooting skill range in given conditions. No reason to be wouding animals.  Keep at it. You'll get him. Tell us all about it when you do.

OK... I'm not a bow hunter...  But, uphill, I'm imagining more than 25 degrees, (otherwise that's not a hillside),  Someone quick, tell me what that equates to with arrow flight perpendicular to flat ground.  42yds?   :chuckle: :chuckle:

I think Bullblaster knows where I'm going with this...

NOT comfortable with a shot at 50yds... But, would he have been comfortable with a 45yd shot? That's 15' less arrow flight. Even less arrow flight against the forces of gravity if the hill was steeper than I've imagined.  Not a big deal to us rifle hunters, but to a bow hunter that's another pin, right?

It definitely wouldn't hit the same spot at 45 as 50. The arrow still travels the full 50 yards. Just affected by gravity same as 45 yards. The vitals (bullseye) is.same as 50 yards so its just like a 50 yard shot but using 45 yard pin.

What I was implying is that when you added everything up in my eyes for me it was not worth the risk of wounding the deer. i would not have taken the shot at 45, or even 40, I'm comfortable at 30. I have hit targets at 50 but who gives a crap about a target?

Years ago I wounded a deer with a rifle right before I killed it, its a bad feeling :bash: :bash:. so since then I have learned to calm down and if I cant do it in one shot I ain't gunna shoot. sucks i had to learn that the hard way but at least I learned my lesson.

and besides bow hunting is about getting close :)

Actually, it really only takes about 5 seconds if you have a calculator. Take the cosine of 25 degrees, and multiply that by 50. That's it, that's your answer. Try it.

mongo hunter that is awesome that you know your limtations and arent willing to deviate, at on time in my life i was a real good bow shot, i only used an old 50lb fred bear recurve i got from my dad, i actually killed my first duck at 11 at 40 yds, one shot dead duck, dad was a proud papa of his little boy, but there is no way i could hunt deer with one because i just didnt trust myself , i hunt with a rifle use to hunt with a muzzle loader, and i can tell you this their isnt to many guys out there that are willing to do what you have done, they would have taken the shot and hoped for best, i for one hope you get him, you have earned it for sure
