Title: 2011 Washington Archery Buck
Post by: backcountrybow on September 07, 2011, 04:24:56 PM
Hello- Here's a pic of my 2011 Archery buck from Eastern Washington.  (Spot & Stalk, DIY, P.L.)
I spotted him from roughly a little over mile away.  Closed the distance...watched him until I saw him bed down. As soon as I saw him look like he was comfortable, I gave him 20 mins...then I worked around the back side of the rimrock...pretty much scaled a cliff (no kidding) to be able to come up and over the top.  I was a little nervous...but the killer instinct was kicking in. I worked my way closer; I finally was able to see his fully velvet horns.  I hit my range finder on him...19 yards (looked like it was 40 yards since I was so high above him.  I inched up closer to the edge...I ranged one more time (he had no idea I was there)...18 yards.  I cow called with my lips...he stood up..and and the razor sharp Montec flew true and did the trick.  Dropped in his tracks...rolled about 10 yards since he was on the slope.  While he did that...he stripped off a ton of his velvet.  Someday I hope to stick one with all the velvet still on. He's not HUGE...but I am very proud of him!

Good luck to everyone.  I am back off to my Toutle bull hunt tomorrow. I came home to spend some time with the fam and get my emails and new files cleared and then it's back out. (it's hot...action is slow so far)

Great story. Congrats on the buck. Are you going to have the fake velvet put back on?

Thanks everyone! I am still pretty pumped that I arrowed this dude! Just thinking back...it was the perfect stalk with a perfectly placed arrow. I would love to have it hang on the wall as is with the velvet hanging...but I don't think that would work out...I am pretty sure it would be pretty smelly.  I am going to do a euro mount on him for sure. I made myself a promise that I would euro or shoulder all 4pt or larger bucks that I arrow. Does anyone know of someone that is great at putting artificial velvet back on?  I have a few other 4 pt bucks that I've arrowed that I've done Euro mounts on...so a change would be nice.

Thanks and I really appreciate any advice.

Most taxidermists have access to somebody who can put artificial velvet on. If you have a local taxidermist that you like, you might check with them first, otherwise pm me and I can recommend somebody but you would have to send your skull out (most taxidermists do this as well).

To put fake velvet on your buck, I would have to recommend Peter's Taxidermy off of 224th and Meridian out in Graham.  The place does amazing work and I have personally seen a few bulls that he has put velvet on and they look natural.  Congrats' on your buck, I have a similiar story to yours, but mine resulted in a miss on one of the biggest blacktails I have ever seen.

Great story and beautiful buck man! Putting a spot and stalk on a mule deer in open country is no easy task. A velvet-mount would be awesome. Thanks for the story, it's just getting me more and more excited to be out there soon myself!

Nice buck! Great stalk and hunt! There are a ton of Taxidermists on here one should have a answer about the velvet.

This was good to read ... I live off 224th and Meridian!!!!!  Hopefully I can steer some business their way later in the year!

And great buck!  Nice write up too!

could you freeze dry the euro with the velvet hanging off, or would it be brittle when frozen and break off?   :dunno:

Thanks again ya'll....I really appreciate the love! I am thinking of doing either a velvet euro or keeping the velvet hanging as is and doing a euro. I kind of jacked up the cape on him a little or I would consider doing a shoulder mount since he has some character. I'm pumped for my upcoming hunts.

Jon G- let's connect soon man. Send me an email when you get a chance.
