I don't get any hunting magazines anymore, who has time to read with this site and family. Since I don't plan on writing this story up for any publication, anyone interested in this years Boneaddict hunt?
-
nope.
-
good, it will save me alot of time and effort with pics. :chuckle:
-

Get writin...and get to processing photos!!!!

Only if you killed something. ;)

-
Now you're just being mean! :bash:
-
Tell us more! Pics are always a plus too!

I packed back into where I went scouting earlier this year. Though I didn't see anything super big the area certainly has potential. I was mostly after that 5x4 buck we saw. I'd be very happy with him
Here he was back at the first of August.

The hike in was nasty. It just happened to be the hottest week of the whole year I think. I managed to make it into my lower camp which is 14 miles in. It took me about 9 grueling hours. I don't think I have ever drank so much water.
My bivy for the week.

Camp will be setup... two tents, one wall, stove, food... Dillon 25 miles away...

Photos won't be the best. I packed my daughters little Lumix with a 5x zoom. Day three I figured out how to get it to digitalzoom to x12. I was trying to avoid the backlash of doing a trip without my camera, but damned if I was going to pack that thing in there again. Then in the trail I was trying to take a photo with it and the damn thing wouldn't work. I was hearing the tongue lashing already. :chuckle:
Like I said, the weather was hot as heck. The deer apparantly were taking full advantage of the bright moon to get their activities out of the way. They are in the middle of their changeover as well with their winter coats coming in and the velvet coming off. I started off the day with only seeing one two point in the rocks in the sun. He happened to be still in velvet and in his reds. My goal was to get into a lofty perch then make a move. Let the climb begin.
-
come on, your killin me on the pics
-
Come on Bone, keep er' coming!
-
Sorry, moose hunting plans had to be ironed out. Moose hunt is ON! Now back to the deer.....
-
Day one: 9 bucks and 20 does. Only two deer worth looking at. One was a nice 3x4 and one was an older aged class buck, that almost took an arrow as he walked by me. I think he was the mystery buck from our scouting trip that looked like he had a huge frame but didn't see any forks. This guy was heavy and probably regressing a bit. He had crabs top and bottom. Took some restraint.......
can you see this guy? a nice 3 point out of velvet
I saw hime both day one and day two....

Yay... boneaddict coming to MT for Hornseeker Moose hunt... hope I supply him with enough entertainment to make it worthwhile!! With the big canon, he should return with a few pics... Moose, lopes, whiteys, mulies... bears? Wolves? elk??
Looking forward to seeing pics of the buck soon Doug!!!
-
I'm almost there. couple bucks to go through....
Here was one that blew me away. Really glad he wasn't a shooter. A nice two point that was in an insane spot. He sat there until the sun hit him then he pulled back into the shadows.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FAntler%2520Images%2Fdeerinrocks.jpg&hash=91efb7d46a57972ad88c9bcea5a84bde422187ab)

-
This is getting good!
-
So, I sat down and had lunch under the biggest 3 foot tree I could find. :) Man the sun sucked. It was flat hot. I then started working my way around the ridge. I kept finding empty beds.....where the heck were the deer. It was insanely steep and nasty.
Watch that first step..

-
Great read, but crappy pics. :chuckle: :hello:
-
ya ya I know....
I was going along as high as I could as all the deer were hiding on the top end of their single trees, or on that side to stay in the shade. I was working the ridge when I spotted this guy standing in the shade next to the rocks. He heard her camera come on, and then meandered off.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FAntler%2520Images%2F3pointshad.jpg&hash=c4d96142db5da676924d7755cf206ee8e53f21d8)
-
That is some steep ground!
-
More Please!! :)
-
I held to the spot as I just had a feeling there were more deer nearby. I leaned out over a rock outcropping to look around some whitepines and there he was. The buck I wanted. There was no way I could get the spotting scope on him. He was about 150 yards or so. I really wanted to gander at him. I surveyed the situation to see how I was going to get the drop on him and I took this pic.
-
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FAntler%2520Images%2Fmybuck.jpg&hash=c97d468d8e02208785622fcd337e45df4c75ef69)
-
I went to try to get above him and only went a few feet when I got this feeling.........I stopped and rechecked the area.
Guess who was watching......
Not really yet, but he would have. He also heard her camera.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FAntler%2520Images%2Ftheobserver.jpg&hash=ef055da8c37fd3b500c493f3202f1f0cae897cfb)

Dang Doug I think those bucks are part bighorn sheep! Good thing you are part mountains goat
-
I had the thought...just because a deer and goat can go there, I should be able to right? :chuckle:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv47%2Fboneaddict%2FAntler%2520Images%2Ftheobserver_edited-1.jpg&hash=5535b7e769e4acc9825d35a4f42e6a24b591e0fe)

You're enjoying yourself, toying with us, aren't you Bone?

Hurry up I have to go to work!!
-
You're enjoying yourself, toying with us, aren't you Bone?
:yeah:
-
So I crouched down, and backtracked out of his site....checked my deer, and he was still there. I almost hated leaning over to look at him...ever look through binos at a high altitude, hanging out over a cliff. KINDA makes you lose your balance.......
I went back about 50 yards creeping in the rocks trying not to send any shale down the hill. There was no way to get closer. I crept back. Both bucks still there....about that time, a small three...very heavy but small framed and def a yound deer came trotting out from under me up to between both of us. I figured the show was over. I froze. Both deer were focused on me now. About 15 minutes passed. I stood there frozen. They were in no hurry. Finally the 3 disappearedand the bedded buck lost interest. I slipped back and my buck was still there.
-
Hurry up I have to go to work!!
I'm at work too. I think my break was over about 5 minutes ago.
-
what to do..........I figured I was going to have to wait and let fate happen. I glanced back at the buck bedded....HE WAS GONE!
-
this is torture!
:bash:
-
Just to be clear, the buck you want is the one below, right? Would you shoot the bedded buck on your right if he came your way?
-
I left my pack and grabbed an arrow, which by the way I only packed 4 this trip. I usually pack 6. and started slipping my way around in the rocks. I got to about 45 yards....all I had was a spine shot. I hate that shot...I hate that distance. I had a tree blocked a bit. The only other buck I've killed with that shot was my biggest. I pulled back.....and the arrow went. Hit him right through the spine and disappeared into his back.
The deer stiffened up both back legs and layed there. All smiles. I let the bow down and was thrilled. 45 seconds went by....then he twitched, kicked...something......and he went over the cliff.........
bang
thump
crash
crash
slide.....
silent
-
no, I wanted the one below. I would have passed on him.
-
now I didn't even know where he was or if I could get to him. I went back and grabbed my pack and started working my way down to where I thought he might be. I came in one ribbon cliff below where he was bedded at least I think thats about where I was......I was trying to find where he hit the rocks....I happened to look down and down the hill a couple hundred feet hanging in a tree was my deer. NICE.
I had to pick several routes to finally be able to get to the tree. I started cutting down the tree and plump came my buck. THANKFULLY he stayed put in the bush. I cut backa couple limbs and here is my buck....

Super cool bone. Thanks for sharing.
-
Nice looking buck Doug... what a hunt.. and I know that was just the "beginning" of the work... wow...14+ miles is a big one... there are really very few places where you can even go 14 miles without hitting a road!!! Nice.
Now, bring that big camera/lens to Montana and lets find a fricken huge bull moose...
-
Congrats! Nice write up bone.
-
I haven't even stretched a tape yet other than his width....26 inches. I'm guessing 160ish. He broke o ff one small cheater. You'll note in the one beam its a bit swollen. Probably some damage in velvet. Has a small hole like a stick got it, and a cheater came out of that as well. He broke it off in the fall.
sounds good Ernie. Looking forward to it.
Yeah, it was a bit much. I own stock in Ibuprophen, Tylenol, and Aleve. I've been packing for a couple days. This heat was nasty. Been awhile since I've seen that much heat in the high country.
-
you...are...EPIC! well done
-
Sounds like a great experience, as per usual for you...An adventure like that is something I've dreamed about numerous times. Good on you for the great write-up
-
45 yards with a longbow.. Wow! Great shooting and great buck. Thanks for sharing. It's nice to 'know' who you are from your presence on this site then see you go out and get a great buck. Makes me very happy for you.
-
What a great story. You define the words sportsman and fair chase. A high bar for most of us "mortals" to strive for-
-
Congrats Bone, nice job!!
-
yeah we may give ya an A+ for all of that plus killing him old school makes you the ultimate bowhunter :yike: hope I did not make your head swell to big :chuckle: :chuckle: :tung:
-
Poor buck didn't have a chance with you after him Bone. Good job. I wouldn't expect any less from you. What an animal (you).
-
Oh yea! That's fricken awesome!
Nicely done! Thanks for sharing!
-
Way to go bone! your a god to us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Probably to the mule deer community too! I can hear the tales going around now about the to legged killer goat! LOL
-
Nice buck! Lotta work went into that one eh.
-
-Awesome!!!
-
You had me from the beginning...what a story! Thanks for sharing!
-
Great read Bone, thank you for the post and congrats on a dandy buck..
-
You guys are very kind. Thank you! I'm still trying to beat Mr Hide and Seek buck. Guess I will have to wait another year. Now its a season of photography. Maybe I'll get him on film this fall. I guess you'll all know it when I do. I'm really looking forward to some moose action now, and then later in the month. Its too dang hot to chase elk.
I had some really cool things happen this hunt. I got a new eberstock pack and its AWESOME! I got the battleship version. Its really quiet so I could wear my frame pack while hunting. It fits even better than the daypack does. Plus I could pack from the spot. It could also support a heavy load. It made me think of my Grandfather and Dad packing freight with an old wood pack and straps. Tough Tough men. It made me ponder while I was "roughing it" with my Ole Boy Olberto jerky and mountain house and nice sleeping bag, what those boys did.
On my first ascent as I was kissing the ground(very very steep) trying to mount the ridge, something wenT flying by my head at mach one, and then another one. Apparantly some territorial Perriguin falcons. After several flyby's, they landed and kept chattering at me. Just as I got on top of the ridge I kicked a blue grouse. DAMNEDD if that falcon didn't nail it in the air and bring it to the ground. SO COOL.
Next day...another ridge over I was watching two more of them. Could be the same birds, but they were very talkative and hunting. I am sitting there watching one soaring and hunting in my binos.....I was hunkering under that small tree.....the bird was very interested in a ground squirrel that was interested with me....the thing is comeing closer and closer....Damned if he didn't land on my hat. NOW that was COOL! Kinda freaky, but COOL.
-
Nice buck, and nice story, Bone. You are truely an inspiration. Thank you.
-
Damn Bone I was on the edge of my seat reading your story! So are you saying your a hobbit on an epic adventure? LOL! Great story and great buck!
-
Great buck Bone, congrats! I bet it was a pain in the butt to hither him by yourself on that hillside!!! Great job!
-
It helps that I am not quite hobbit sized. :)
-

I need to get some close ups of that bow on here. I was thinking that while passing time on the mountain. Ernie did such an awesome job. Gorgeous wood. The zebra limbs are amazing.
-
Once again Bone, you da man!!!
-
Awesome job. What beautiful, lonely country. From your FB photos you didn't even look sweaty, so I thought you had an easy hunt this year. Lol, I was definitely wrong about that.
-
That was a fun story to read, awesome pictures and an awesome deer!
-
Congrats Doug on a dandy buck. Great writeup as usual.
-
All I can say is:   :rockin:

To me, all the other things that happen on a hunt like these add up to at least just as important as the kill. :twocents: Thanks for the adventure!
-
Awsome hunt Bone, I would love to be able to go on a hunt like that one day. You ever do any guide trips? If so sign me up!! :chuckle:
-
Great story and nice buck! Looks like some tough country for sure.
MS
-
Thanks for taking us with you on your adventure Bone the write-up, and pictures were fantastic. A well deserved trophy for the amount of time you spend in that country I just wonder how you convince the misses to let you go back that far alone. Im thinking a several million dollar life insurance policy is sitting around the house somewhere ;)
-
Awesome story, and a great buck!
-
Good work Doug! I love reading about backcountry hunts, especially solo hunts!! AWESOME job!
-
Great story, great buck, and I found the photo's very informative in that they demonstrate that there is no such thing as too rugged or (seemingly) barren. They also show how bucks use topography/shadows to stay hidden in an otherwise relatively open landscape. Good work and you set the bar pretty high.
-
Great buck and story Bone. Greatly enjoyed reading that. Congratualtions!
-
great story and buck.
-
Right on!! Great story and nice looking buck! Congratulations!!
-
Bone, another awesome buck and hunt. I look forward every year to your hunt.
-
Way to cool. Solo backcountry hunt with traditional stick and a buck like that, you are a god!
-
Sounds soo fun! I'd love too hunt with you sometime. I'd be a adventure! Nice buck too!!
-
Your camera should have a setting in the menu to turn off all sounds. You should look.
Great hunt.
-
Great hunt and recap bone, I can't image hunting in that heat over there. I went out for a few hours this morning on this side of the mountians and it was too warm for me by 9am.
-
HGH + anabolic steroids + Frodo = Doug
-
Great story Bone and great buck. I always love reading your stories and looking at your pictures. You are the definition of hard core. Congrats!!
-
HGH + anabolic steroids + Frodo = Doug
:chuckle: I think he's a Ninja.

He is part Sasquatch, that is how he can pull off what he does with such consistency!
-
Sounds like a fun hunt, and a nice buck as well.
-

-
Um... Wow!
I am speechless... (those that know me, know that's impossible) :chuckle:

Many thanks everyone! Yes, I put these boots to work. I duct taped my feet on the way in just in case. I kind of got a rash a bit from the tape or the adhesive, so I didn't bother with it the rest of the trip. My feet look pretty beat up but no nasty holes. I think the boots are broke in. I did burn my socks and undies and one t shirt this trip. Anything to cut some weight down. I got rid of some oatmeal and snickers bars too.
Its really funny how things change year to year. Last year was pure survival with 8 inches of wet snow and rain and fog. This year was fighting dehydration and heat. I actually watched one spring completely dry up overnight. I found this great spot to coyote out and was impressed this spring was there. I anticipated it the next morning, and it dried up over night, at least to a point I wouldn't drink out of it, and the main creek I was on probably cut at least a good 1/3 in size during the week as the snowpacks disappeared. Through all my years of the outdoors, I think thats the hottest I have seen it in the high country. I sure burned some sweat.
I do need to sort something out for a camera. My lumix worked pretty good for these sort of things but I wanted something even smaller. It also hasn't been very dependable since I took it for that swim. I was going to buy something, but decided to try my daughters. I had most of the beeps turned off, but when you turn it on it still does this start up thing where the lens opens and goes in and out. The deer just loved that motor sound, and its long enough they could zero in on it. IT wasn't until half way through that day that I found it did have a bit of optical zoom on it, but certianly it hampers the photo quality. The shot I missed the most was the one in the middle of the mountain on that outcropping. I think the photo would have been AWESOME with my big camera. Haze might have got me though. You guys might note the air quality sucks out there, even at that altitude. I was dreaming of some crisp pics though.
-
Absolutely great story and Buck, Bone. You put in the effort and you get the reward, congratulations buddy.
Now I feel sorry for the Moose in southwest Montana!
-
When are you going out with your Dad?
-
That was an amazing story. I love reading stuff like that on here. That makes me want to go hunting. :)
Several companies make small waterproof digital cameras now. I bought one for about $175. It works well, but its not super nice. Ive ruined several cameras by dropping them in water. Its nice not to have to worry about water, with a waterproof digital...
-
Doug, I am headed out with Dad on the 27th and will be staying until the 12th of October or until he kills a Moose, whichever comes first. When you headed over to hunt with Ernie?
-
That is an inspiring story. Thanks for sharing.
That country could make you dizzy.
Curious-- did you pack out all in one trip?
Now hurry up and help Ernie get that bull, so he can get to work on my bow ;)
-
Man that was a great read Bone. what a great trip. Rick ;)
-
Congrats Bone and thanks for taking us along, means alot to all of us!
P.S. Those Zebra limbs are the cats meow! Sapphire Hawk!!!!!!!
-
Congrats Bone, Very nice looking buck! Quite a talent shooing a long bow with that level of precision!
-
Unreal , Awesome story and deer
-
I did it in stages Quad. hanging the boned out meat in the bottoms or holes where it was cool, then going back for gear. My gear is all in waterproof bags so takes me about 4 minutes to completely pack up so that wasn't a problem. That new pack also helped as it has all the right straps in all the right places. There was no way I could do it in one trip even without the cape. Just too much and I am too out of shape. The last time I did it, I swore I'd never do it again.
-
Bone,
Got an honest question for ya.....Being as hot has it has been, 14 miles in, location of the kill, and the photos look to be at a time of day where the sun is really out (maybe not)......How in the heck do you get the meat out without it spoiling?!?!
I have never figured it out.....I see hunts all the time in the back country....or in Nevada, where the hunter is in shorts and a tee shirt...sweating like crazy....posing with a buck.....How do you, or did you get the meat out???
Would love to know cause i truly have no idea....Thanks in advance for the info......
-
The last time I did it, I swore I'd never do it again.
:chuckle: :chuckle:
But the Beauty of the high country keeps you coming back.
Thanks for sharing a hunt we can all dream of. I haven't spent that much time in the High/high country, so was shocked to see where those bucks are hanging out. I had no idea. I may have walked by many and never even thought to look
-
Very nice Doug, well done.

One of my favorite things about this site are when people take the time to write up their stories. Thanks for the good read. Congrats!
-
Bone I would be interested in hearing what all gear you take up there you must be traveling pretty light.
-
Nice buck! Well that story there puts my lil solo bear hunt to shame, i was only 9 miles in lol., I dont know how you have the determination to hike in 14miles for a critter, must of been a hell of a pack out. One of these days i will have to hike into that wilderness and see just how lost i can get

Nice buck, Doug.

Like everyone else has said, great story, nice write up and congrats on a beautiful WA muley!
-
Great lookin buck and man, the work to get that buck...nice!
I know just what you mean about looking through binos while your up high like that. Congrats man!
-
Great buck bone. I haven't been very excited about hunting season this year. But your story sure got me excited and ready to go.
-
Congrats on a fantastic buck, sir! Great write-up and photos as always... the photos you posted of these bucks earlier definitely got me glassing a little higher in elevation than I normally would have! I think you killed a new-and-endangered species... the mule-horn sheep... or perhaps a muley-goat! :chuckle:

Congrats Bone and thanks for the write up! Mulies with the trad bow, on a solo backpack hunt are just so darn cool. I'm constantly trying to figure out how to lighten up my load. Last week during the first 3 days elk opener I slept on the ground with no bag/shelter, was too hot to get in the bivy sack or bag... Now I'm thinking about next year and how light I can go.
-
Great story , thanks for sharing it with us . I'm very courious how the meat turned out . ur the man no doubt.
-
It takes balls to hunt that way my hat is off to you.
-
Thanks guys. Meat turned out fine Coach. It was key to know where there were cooler spots to keep it in the journey. Packing good meat bags is a must as well to keep it clean and let it get air.
-
Great story and photos!! What meat bags do you use Bone??
-
I'm not sure. I picked them up at sportsmans wharehouse a few years ago for my moose hunt. The wrapper is long gone and I don't recall any logos on them.
-
You probably ate half of the animal while you were way back there anyhow!! :chuckle:
-
I did cook up some fresh steaks. Way better than mountain house.
-
Fantastic hunt! I don't think I have ever read a more impressive hunt story (including magazines) that involved such a long solo hike in during hot weather (I was hunting elk in that weather) and a kill at that distance with a longbow (or was it a recurve?)
What type of bow are you shooting (Brand, length, pounds..) I shoot a longbow, but my longest kill was around 30 yards. Awsome shooting man!
Thanks for the story and the crappy pictures.
-
70 pounds at 32 inches. I think the length is 66, at least that rings a bell in my mind. Its a Sapphire Hawk, made by hornseeker on here. I NEED to get some close up photos of it on here.
-
That's was a better read then any magazine I've ever purchased, and pics to boot, and for free. Thanks, nice story and buck! Love how you broke it up with everybodys comments in-between. I purchased a Eberlestock pack this year for the first time, the gunslinger II in rock viel, not quite the freight pack you got but love the scabbard for my gun, came in handy for climbing up this year for my first high buck hunt.

Great Story and Buck!!!
-
Great story, very impressive! Congrats on the buck!
Thanks for sharing,
Mike

Nice Story and Pics Bone! I hate turning on the camera and have the deer look right at you. Happens everytime I turn the video camera on. :bash: I'm going to start calling you Tred Barta! That was definately doing it the hard way...I guess you could say doing it the "Bone" way! Congratulations on a Beautiful animal!
-
I don't know how I missed this one, congrats yet again. Cool to see someone "our" age have your kind of success, great going.
-
Great story and congratulations on the hunt.
