Title: Bumping bull down!
Post by: norsepeak on September 16, 2011, 12:13:51 PM
Packed in to Apple lake a week ago with two horses, been getting into bulls everday.  Passed on three bulls, got close to several more, but couldn't get a shot, so after a week of mtn. house and eastern brook trout, we were running out of food, so we packed up and headed out for lower country.  Well, we got down to the trailhead and we were re-packing one of the horses when a bull ripped out a nasty bugle only about 100 yards away, so we looked at each other and said "let give it a try"  So the hunter grabbed his bow, I grabbed my calls and we sprinted across the campground to the edge of the river.  The bull was across the riverbed from us, so I do a little calling, and next thing ya know, here he comes.  He comes across the riverbed and up onto the bank that we are on and stops at 40 yards broadside.  The hunter drew, took his time and made a sweet shot, the bull spins, runs back across the riverbed and then slowly walks up into the timber, so we sat down and had some lunch and gave him an hour.  After lunch we got on the blood and followed it for about 100 yards and found him tipped over.  We got the ponies right to him, quartered him up and loaded him and down the trail we went...great trip and great hunting, lots of bulls going nuts.

Nice bull.

So, how many brook trout does it take before one grows tired of them?

Nice bull.

In my experience, after about 30/hunter, grouse become a real high priority!  I'll let Norse speak for himself.

Thanks guys, we had a great time.  Heard and saw a lot of nice bulls, caught a lot of trout, I think 10/meal is about enough for me anyway :chuckle:

Heck, Run, I'll give them the GPS cooridinates if they want....he's dead...that means he is no longer there.  All they will find will be a pile of bones.

Hey Norse...Bumped into you guys up there on the trail.  I was the solo hunter that was moving up on the bull it turns out you had been following.  Felt it was the right thing to back off and let you guys go on in and work him.  You had him going good, but sounded like he hung up just out of range.  Your one heck of a caller, and really gave him a show!  I too had close opportunity at some NICE bulls but was solo and all hung up at around 60 yards.  Wound up shooting a 5x next to last evening.

Hey thanks Bam, yeah we got close, had one of his cows come down the hill and stop 8 yards behind my shooter, but he just wouldn't come down close enough for a shot.  We ended up moving camp over the hill to the west and getting into a couple really nice bulls, but just couldn't get a shot until on the way out...lol.  Thanks for letting us finish up chasing him, don't often run into guys with those kind of ethics and respect for other hunters too much anymore.  Glad you nailed one.

Did the fish come out of Apple or pear? I have hiked in a few times looking for spikes, but never considered the extra 5 ounces a pole would add.....lol.

Congrats norse, and a tip of the hat to bam.....way to be.

Sweet Bull NP! Great country out there.  I love all the brook trout in those two lakes.  Always take my fly rod when going there, but seems like the bigger ones a bit deeper.  Gotta love those wilderness areas!
