Title: New to hunting
Post by: jennyfell55 on September 18, 2011, 04:46:37 PM
Hi there everyone! I'm new to hunting, and trying to find someone to introduce me to the sport. I've got a modern tag for deer, but I would also LOVE to try my hand at grouse hunting in the mean time. Would anyone be willing to help me out? Thank you so much!

~Jenny

Jenny.......First thing I would need to ask is how old are you (because you may need hunter safety courses). I am always looking for someone to go out with. I spend alot of time in the woods this time of year and most people I know can't get away as much as I can. PM me and lets chat, and congrats on getting in to hunting

My son and I have burned our bear tags.  We only half assed it this year though.  Any luck lining anything up for deer?

Still a few out for bear.  The longer you wait until the end of the season, the furrier and fatter they get.  Plus, by getting a bear in the colder weather less likely to lose meat.  I'm not familiar with your area so can't say I know of places there for bears.

DoubleJ: I've had a couple people talk to me about deer, but I'm always looking for more. I figure the more I can get into the woods the better my chances of bringing home a deer  :IBCOOL: I am in the southern Lakewood, between Ft Lewis and Tacoma. Driving isn't too big of an issue for me as my car gets decent mileage. What it can't do is get up forest roads :( That's one of the reasons I'm looking for a partner actually, in addition to wanting some good company and not being comfortable going into the woods alone looking for something that can eat me  :yike: I'd prefer to not drive to Idaho or anything  :chuckle: but the drive to Monroe a couple weeks ago wasn't bad at all.

Looking to months from now/next season here, I'm in the process of getting a longer barrel with chokes for my shotgun. Once that's taken care of I'd love to try my hand at waterfowl and turkey hunting. I would love to find someone to be my mentor to take me under their wing :chuckle: The barrel is 28" with a 3" chamber and interchangeable chokes.. is that suitable for these activities?

If you already have a short barrel, that will work for turkey. 28" will be good for the ducks/geese. Check out the turkey thread. Lots of good information in there. Ping me if you have any questions. I'm a turkey junkey.

I have always wanted to hunt but never really knew anyone that hunts.  I have not taken my hunters safety course yet but would like to start talking to people to mentor me and help me begin getting all the proper equipment! I am super excited and willing to drive. I am in the TricCities:)

You could get the one year hunter's ed deferrment and still go hunting this season.  It might help if you list what types of hunting (deer/elk/high country/bird/road/archery) you are wanting to try.

What is a hunter's ed deferrment?  Do you have more info on that?

you can take someone huntn that has not been through hunter ed, the reason is to see if they like it before waisting their time sitting at one of the courses, i took a kid through the same thing and after the season was over he couldnt wait to get signed up for hunter ed... call the wdfw and ask about the one time defferal hunting license and they will tell you all the stuff you will need the only thing that was a pain is i had to go to oly in person hopefully you dont have to that anymore but either way it wasnt a bad expierience the people there were real helpful

That's a perfect size gun for waterfowl. Are you still looking for someone to go with? I just recently started looking for people to go with because I'd like to go every weekend if i could, but my dad can't always go with me. Oh ya, i have a truck.  :)

@TacomaHunter: I already have a pass for JBLM, I just don't really know what areas out there are any good for deer. Are you planning on going there at all for late season?

@kendawg2485: I'm always looking for hunting partners! I'm still scraping the last of the money together for the barrel, but hopefully I will have that soon. I already have a set of waders, hooray! Even though I've never been I get the feeling I'll want to go as much as I can!

Ok, that's cool. I'm new the game as far as looking for people to hunt with. I've always hunted with my dad and his friends, but they don't go as much as i'd like to. I would like to go as many weekends as I can until the end of the season. Having waders is a good thing. Lol! If you ever decide you might want to meet up with me sometime to go, I have 2 extra guns to choose from if you'd like to use one. If your interested, shoot me an email with more info and maybe we can get together.  :)

If you willing to come to Olympia, I have a FT. Lewis pass also.  I know the areas pretty well, I will also be in the capitol forest if you would like to see that area.  What are you doing for elk?  My party will be in raymond for the till wednesday, after that i'll be flying solo!
