Title: Success on the East Side. 6 for 10 with 4 youngsters in camp.
Post by: brianb231 on September 19, 2011, 09:46:59 AM
Hey Guys,

We just returned from our Archery Elk Hunt on the East Side. We harvested 6 elk out of 10 tags. Two 5x5 bulls, two spikes, and two cows. One of the best parts of the hunt was having my 9 year old boy in camp for about 7 of those days. He was involved on many of the hunts, watched me shoot an elk and helped call some bulls in. I know my Dad who started our elk camp over 20 plus years ago and passed away in 2009 is smiling down on us. With 4 new and upcoming bowhunters in camp it was a great experience. The elk hunting was good too. Here are a couple pics. I will let the others from our camp post other pics and tell their stories. I love Elk Hunting!

Thanks for all the kind words! It was a great hunt. We surely did not see as many opportunities as we usually do. We just made the most of the ones that we did this year. I think we added a few more elk hunting addicts though. That was the best part! Having my 9 year old with us this year was the best! I got to hear him gasp and see his eyes widen more than a few times. You could see him struting around with pride knowing he had a part in calling in some of the elk. :chuckle:

More to come later, but after being out of the office for two weeks, to much to catch up on..... but I just had to check in on huntwa and saw this post......

I was lucky enough to hunt with BrianB231 and his son, and  both myself and my son were fortunate enough to take an elk with their assistance!!  This was an amazing season with great success for our camp, but as BrianB already stated, having our children in camp with us this year, seeing my son take his first ever animal (5x5 bull), having my other son there to be a part of it, and the memories we all made and most importantly, reconnecting with my youngest son was better than anything I could have hoped for.

This will be a season to remember and I am now sure that my son will be a part of our camp for many many years to come!!!

Much thanks to my hunting partners for the calling and the friendships!  It wouldn't be the same without you!

Finally a moment for 2 of the stories.  I will try to keep them short...

My son drew a peaches ridge tag this year, and he, myself and my hunting partner put a lot of time in to scouting and preparation for the hunt.  My son has been in the woods with the 2 of us since he was 4 years old.  He is now 19, and had yet to harvest an animal, so this was going to be the year we went ALL OUT to get it done!
We all put a ton of work into making this year a success, and looking back, all of that work is what made this such a special year.  The tagged elk were just a bonus!

My son and I had both really wanted to hunt a place we have named "Hell".  It is a steep, deep hole that few will dare to travel, and we knew there would be elk there.  The lure of the hard work draws me here, and I am proud to see that trait has passed to my son.  Anyway, one morning after a blown set up on a hot bull in another area, we decide to run up to Hell, and see if we could get anything to talk.  The 3 of us take our usual positions and do a little calling when immediately a bull responds ABOVE US!  (They are never up there.....) any way, another bull sounds off from way down in "the hole" and a few cows begin to call.  Immediately I realize I am in the wrong position to be the caller, but the elk are closing fast and there is no time to trade spots.  Within seconds a cow and a spike appear in front of myself and my hunting partner.  With the wind hard at our backs and them broadside at 43 yards, we both landed our shots and were very fortunate to tag 2 beautiful elk that morning!!!  It was a long hard day, but very fortunately for us, neither went in the hole!  We shot them at around 10AM and by 6PM both were quartered (We used the gutless method for our first ((and second)) time and will do so again in the future) and headed for the cooler!

This was actually a VERY quiet year in our area and not many elk were talking, so we knew what we had to do to give my son an opportunity to fill his tag.   So, a couple of days later we returned to Hell to see if we could make something happen there again.

My son and I had located a bull earlier in the afternoon in "the bedroom"  which is across Hells canyon, and decided to leave him alone until we had our partners to call for us.  Later that evening, less than 100 yards from the spike carcass, my partner and his 9 year old son started calling.  Say what you will about the hoochie momma, but in a 9 year olds hands they are PRICELESS!!  His calls mixed with his dads estrus calls, brought this bull RUNNING!!!!

My son was 10 yards in front of me as we slowly moved towards the bedroom.  All of the sudden (within 3 minutes of their first call) we hear a crashing and assumed we scared something away.  Then, I see my son range something, and wonder "does he see something I can't???  Seconds later he blows a soft cow call, comes to full draw and releases his arrow!!!  50 yards, right through the heart!!!  The bull took 10 steps looked back at us and fell over!!!! :IBCOOL:

What a moment and what a season!!!  Too many memories and moments to share, but having my sons, my best friend and his son... I will never forget Elk season 2011!  I am truly blessed!

Oh man I can't believe you told everyone you were hunting the Peaches Ridge unit. Now everyone in the state is gonna pick up roots and hunt there now. Gee willickers Dad  gum some people. Man and now people are gonna go to Hells Crossing because it has elk and is such a pleasant hike. Goodness sakes even though I had no plans of huntimg tjere you completely ruined any chances i had of thinking about going there.  Man you and norse peak are making signs all over telling people to go there.

 :chuckle:
In case you didn't know I am full of it. Congrats again on a great hunt and great writeup.

The other part of this story that I find funny is that We have monitored this place we call "Hell" for a couple years now and it is nasty, steep and deep. I kept trying to tell him there are other areas that we can kill an elk in without taking our kids (and myself  :chuckle:) down in there. Well, we tried the other areas and everything kept leading us back to "Hell". There is a reason there are always elk there. I guess I was the hesitant one. The kids....They didnt even have a second thought. They wanted to go down in. As luck would have it the elk we did take did not go all the way into the bottom of "Hell". We ended up taking 3 elk out of there so I guess I am going to learn to love this place we call "Hell". One thing is for sure. The hunting pressure there will almost always be minimal! Thanks again to my hunting partner for forcing me out of my comfort zone once again!.

Congratulations!!! The memories will far out live the tangibles. Now that my boys are older, when I am successful in harvesting an animal, they just hand me their weapons and drag it out for me. That was a little hard for me to swallow the first time they did it but I am getting use to it now.  :)

That's good. I'm gratefull anytime my Dad hunts with me.  And I take a lot of happiness and look forward in doing anything to help him out. If your sons are like me dragging out or packing out an animal our Dad shoots is the least we can do for all that you have done for us.
