Title: Sneak Boats
Post by: jordano on September 22, 2011, 10:20:44 AM
Hey y'all!

So I have been getting rather frustrated.. I have been looking on Craigslist like crazy to find sneak boats, etc. But I have been having horrible luck finding anything. I realize this is probably something that should be in the classifieds but I could use a little help finding some things. I really like the Beavertail Phantom, but would like to try to find it a lot cheaper than what their website says.. anything helps! I would build one but I don't have the time for it..

thanks,

Jordan

hey...gasman and i built 8' sneak boats in about a 2-3 week timeframe working on it for a few hours a night after we got home from work.  probably a bit cheaper than finding one online unless you catch a marsh rat on C/L.  it was pretty easy and fun too...just a thought and my  :twocents:

If you do your research, you can find plans for many different shapes and sizes.

building one on;y takes as much time as you devote to it. i built mine in a week and plan on building a second on, just a little bigger and minor modifacations to fit me and my dog  :IBCOOL:

Weather is a decent factor in the resin hardening when you're building a boat, though - keep that in mind. I never really liked mixing hot batches of resin personally. I'd see what you can find on CL and go from there. I may have a boat I'd be willing to hand off your way for really cheap.. although it's not terribly great for duck hunting. It's a little old rowboat with a really slow leak in the bottom that I don't really have the time to properly fix up.. It's not cammo but I painted it with the ultra flat khaki stuff, and I have hunted out of it with two guys.  :dunno:

PM me if you're interested :)

yeah I have a big fat goose egg when it comes to time cause I am going to school and all.. I really like the set up of this sneak/layout boat.. it is small and light enough I can pack it around by myself plus its stable as heck!

How much are you looking to spend?  There have been Otters on CL at times.
Bottom line when it comes to marsh boats, it is tough to beat an aquapod or marsh rat and they are much easier to find.

Might check this out if you want a project.

What exactly are you looking to do out of your boat? Hunt open water? paddle long distances? hunt tidal bays?

salt flats and small ponds.. something I can get lost in the weeds with when I want to set up.. something that is small enough that I can carry it myself fairly easily.. use it as a layout boat and a sneak boat to paddle around

roto molded marsh rat with a H20 blind is going to be the ticket.   I looked at making one, and you just cant do it for the benefits that you get with a rat. beat the hell out of it, hose it out and do it again. Sounds like short distances and concealment are the top priorities. This fits the bill to a T and you cant them.  Put the time in and find one online.  Might get lucky and find one for about $500.

There have been several on the internet over the past several months.  Keep looking.

I have hunted from a canoe in the area you are talking about. Skagit, and Samamish bay. What i can tell you is that the current and wind make paddling VERY energetic! You might be surprised how much current there is int the fingers.  :twocents:

Another vote for the marsh rat, I like mine but it is the magnum a little bigger but not as light as the roto moulded type.  I found mine on craigs list a couple of years ago look under boat and sporting goods.  Good luck

I have an Aqua Pod that works well for me, it is a short (8 ft.) and fat (read stable) kayak. Not sure if they are still making them anymore, but I did see one cheap on craigslist about a month ago. Search for that name.

not a bad deal on a pod actually.  Most of them around 1K plus now. I saw one in BC for $1175 I think.

I would encourage you to really evaluate how much you would actually use the boat.  I have a bunch of duck boats and it boils down to me using each one about 8 times per season if that?  I had a marshrat for 4 years and hunted out of it only a handful of times.   :yike:

I will use it a lot actually, last year there were lots of spots where I didn't hunt because I didn't have one or lots of times when I wish I would have had one..

I ran across two otters for sale on craigslist this past week.  One in Portland and one south of Seattle if your looking.  There is also aqua pod on the Refuge forum for sale.  It looks to be just across the boarder in Canada.
