Title: Trying to call yotes but i scare them.
Post by: MIKEXRAY on June 29, 2008, 06:20:02 AM
I live in federalway on 3/4 of an acre and big fields all around me and we have coyotes every where. So being the hunter I am I bought a dying rabbit squeal call. So far I have had three coyotes in the fields next to me on different days and I get all ready. I blow the call hiding in the back yard and at the call the yote tuck their tail and haul ass out of there. No hesitation or curiosity just bam, gone. They are 50 yards away when I call in the side yards and I am trying to bring them into my archery range in back. My only thought is I'm blowing to loud since they are that close ? Not blowing loud but at that range I'm sure they could hear a lot less. They definitely don't see me. Any ideas ?

If they are 50 yards out you could be spooking them. I would try something quieter like a kids (or pets) squeak toy or just a lip squeak with a feather decoy. Pup distress may pull them in as well.
What about the wind?

When they are that close just use your lips , pucher up and suck or "kiss". I'm not sure how to explain it, basicaly the same type sound Billy is talking about. They should come right in.

The noise I'm making is way louder than you guys are describing. Posted this at 6:20 and two yotes trotted through my back yard at 7:30. Didn't call since my bow is in the shop. Not that I would shoot. :chuckle:  I'll try a much quieter squeek. Thanks.

Too loud.
At 50yds when there isn't much wind, they can hear a "kiss" or "lip squeak" plenty well enough.

Another thing to think about is if they see/smell you.
If they see you set up, then hear you call, they arent going to come. You need to get into the area without them noticing, or you just spook 'em away. If you think they may have noticed you, get into position and wait for 10-15 minutes quiet and motionless for things to calm back down.

They could have been shot at when going into that call and they know what that sound equals now.

These ones are not hunter savy and never been shot at since I live in the city. I am blowing to loud for sure. I will try quieter and let you know how it goes.

Also, you might try tying some feather up in a bundle and hanging it from a tree a bit away from you....so it catches the wind and causes movement (or have something else to cause movement), this might distract them long enough for you to draw your bow on them.

Good luck with it.

Neighborhood Coyotes are some of the hardest on earth to get into a kill position. They know too much about what is safe, and they know every square foot of WHERE is safe. Likely they know that noise just ain't right, whether they've heard it before or not.

It's a fun challenge, different from what most people confront trying to kill Coyotes. I'm real interested to hear what you try and how things pan out!

I have a golf course I try a few times per year, same thing. Very neighborhood educated, very people savvy. Doesn't matter if they've been called before or not. I've had then in long shotgun range, but didn't risk a shot for fear of chasing a wounded Coyote through someone's yard in the dark! (Bad scene!) Shotgun only area.

Keep us posted! Likely, They'll drive you up a wall!

A friend of mine lives in New Castle area of Bellevue, he has a bad yote prob at his place. Between He and his neighbors they have lost 5 cats, 2 very small dogs and a ferret. He has seen them chasing a cat in the street in the middle of day.

He has called them from 50-60 yrd out to  about 15 yrds with a mouse squeek call. His is just a squeeze bulb type he bought at Joes.

If he can get them that close, let's go stick some arrows in them!

No arrows... CB caps baby... CB caps. I lived in a huge apartment complex in Renton, when we moved in there was a huge population of nasty azz wild cats. In just a few short months, and a box of CCI CB Longs,  later there were almost none... no one was the wiser.
