Headed over to the Pack Forest on Saturday morning ... ran into an elk archer ... told me in previous years they'd seen grouse, but he hadn't seen any that morning ...
I hiked for an hour+ and saw a bunch of sparrows. And 1 dove away off in the distance.
Anyone else hunted grouse in the Pack forest with success? I was on the 7 side, not the "entry house" side of the forest, if that matters.

GCRocketman I rode my mountain bike in the pack forest a ton the summer of 2010 and never saw one grouse. The only thing that I did see was an owl. No deer, no elk, no bear, however, I did see a lot of people except for when I was riding in the southeast side of the forest. Not to say that they aren't there, but it might be that there are to many people around. Good luck and try the roads less traveled.

Tried grouse hunting in there already this year. Nothing at all. I was disappointed for sure.

I tried the road less traveled ... its why I was on the side of the Hwy7 that I was on ... the visitor center on the other side seemed like it would attract more ... beautiful country up there and other than the archer I ran into on the trail I didn't see another soul.
I don't know what they were hunting, but from the visitor center side there were a few shots, and away off in the distance from the side I was on it sounded almost like a dove hunt ... LOTS of shots grouped together, then silence, then lots of shots ... that or early season waterfowl
As for deer/elk - that place is riddled with sign for them ... I'm gonna scout it a bit over the next week or so before rifle season opens ... from both sides of Hwy7
HuntnFish - which side/area were you on? I saw an owl and a bunch of sparrows ... and something WAY high up in a pine tree that I couldn't quite identify. That was it for birds

GCRocketman,
I always came in from the visitor center as I always brought my dog with me. To worried about people taking my dog kennel and breaking into my truck to try and park on the HWY 7 side. Probably also why I didn't see much sign that and I was there mainly to get myself and the dog in shape, so I was always pushing hard on the uphills and seeing how fast the pup could run on the downhills. The owl was off a short spur road that went down to HWY 7. As a crow flies pretty near the visitors center.

Cool! Thanks!
I'm thinkin a walk in the rain might be in store for Saturday morning over there ... just to scope things out. May even leave the shotty in the truck

Don't do that! Unless you want to guarantee seeing birds... :chuckle: I swear, anytime I wander off from the truck for whatever reason, I almost always regret to having my gun. Just sain'.

Yeah ... thats a GREAT point! LOL
With my luck that is EXACTLY what would happen.
Maybe I'll bring it but not have a shell in it ... maybe split the luck that way?
