Title: Dec. 18th - Jan 8th Teanaway Rifle Cow Elk Hunt Help
Post by: FrDLappe on September 27, 2011, 01:11:43 PM
My brother and I got drawn for the antlerless elk hunt in Teanaway for late December/Early January.  It sounds like snow is a big determining factor on where a person hunts and that private land access is at a premium.

However, I would be interested in finding an area where one could camp and snowshoe looking for elk rather than just shoot one out of a farmers field.  If any one had some ideas I would appreciate some direction in getting started on my scouting.

We are in very good shape and don't mind working for a big cow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is plenty of timber company land once you get passed the farms and that time of year there are still a lot of elk and just right for snowshoes.

My dad had the tag 2 yrs ago and we were hard pressed to find an elk. The gammie we ran into said that the tag was designed to push  the elk out of the area and cause them to migrate to winter range. He also said he hadnt seen an elk in 3 weeks, other than where people were feeding on private. We did fill the tag on the evening before the last day but........for a cow?? Good luck. There are still a few around.

My dad had this tag last year and we hunted for a solid week and only saw bulls taken. There was close to 2 + feet of snow up above the river. The only cows we saw were in Ronald on a private feeding station. You really need a snow mobile to get around or at least snowshoes. Every third step we broke through the snow to above our knees. We had a lot of fun but we will never put in for that tag again. Hope you have better luck. Don't wait until the end of that season. Go as soon as it opens. When your up there try to stay in the snowmobiles tracks it is kind of packed down making it a little easier to walk. Good luck and have fun.
