Title: Coyote Call?
Post by: tides56 on September 27, 2011, 09:21:39 PM
Tryed Coyote hunting half a dozen times... with no coyote :bash: . just with a simply reed call. Time to upgrade to a nice electronic one. What has WORKED for you?

Open reed calls are good.  Electronic calls are good.  A half dozen stands does not a coyote hunter make.  If you are expecting an electronic caller to suddenly make you a successful coyote hunter, you are in for a big letdown. I've got both types of callers, plus decoys, camo, Ghillie suit, and several varmint rifles, and in 3 years of coyote hunting, I have yet to kill a coyote.  I hate to break it to you, but in the 200 years ranchers have been trying to exterminate them, they are smarter, more numerous than ever, and now have expanded their range to cover most of the North American Continent.  You will not find a more cunning adversary than a coyote.  Once coyote hunting gets in your blood it's a disease that has no cure.

Sounds like if you're expecting a ghuillie suit, mouth and electric calls, decoys and numerous rifles to make you a coyote hunter and not kill anything in 3 years maybe you should buy a hunting video game....it would be cheaper!!

wow way to check the date of the post... :dunno: also I have always found it classy when a "expert" tells someone struggling to play a video game instead.

No, you didn't.  40 years in construction taught me to ignore rash statements from young'uns!  In my personal experience, I have gotten a lot more response from mouth calls than I ever got from the E-caller.  and RR Calls makes some of the BEST calls...

Rick Robbins.  I see you are in Kennewick.  If he's at the Coyote Classic in Pasco again this time, he will have calls for sale there.  He's an advertiser on this site, too.  Nice guy.  He will even show you how to use his calls.

It is my job however to inform you to straighten up and play nice .   This is a nice site and we intend to keep it that way.  Here is your warning.

To me and maybe others. Coyotes are probably the hardest predator to call in. They are very street smart and know the end result if they weren't. I hunt them year 'round with very little success. I shoot maybe 3-5 a year where I live because everybody shoots at them and smarten them up real quick. Don't give up and don't buy an ecaller. Learn the mouth calls first and I think you'll have better luck. I've never called in anything with my FoxPro Spitfire.

I have about every call you can buy off the shelf, plus 40-50 custom made ones,  electronic calls work great as well. Make sure you are where coyotes are..... siren before daylight works great if can't find visible sign, then approach your stand as if a coyote is watching you get into place, play the wind and then be persistent... They'll come, and there is fun to be had in the timber as well as wide open places....
Wind and careless noise is more important than ecaller or mouthblown in my opinion.
Good Luck, and learn to howl....

I've never called in anything with my FoxPro Scorpion, either.  But I still try...  I get better results with my mouth calls.  I must hunt well educated coyotes too.  They are extremely wary!
