About 930 I spot a cow out about 500 yards out. I park the truck and close the gap. I get to within about 75 yards of her calling all the way. She finally spooks and runs up the hill. I heard a peculiar sound from up the hill behind me. I stop for a second and start heading back to the truck. I round the corner and I hear a bull grunting, (he made the peculiar sound) I call him within 20 yards and I can see his antler tips peering above some young firs. He turns and heads back up hill, I cow call. This stops him and he side hills. I get a couple shots of him. Not a big bull but his horns lay out flat. I spent the rest of the morning getting the lay of the land. I found about 6 different rut pits from different bulls. All made that night with the turn of the weather. I was afraid it was too early. Nothing like the smell of moose piss. THey should make a cologne of it.

THen there is the 60 incher. A guy told me about him, and I am LEARY on most peoples judgements on moose. HE'S BIG
I gave a big grandious call scheme and waited for a long time when I finally heard "him". He was about 1.5 miles south of me headed my way. I wasn't in the best spot to photo him.......about an hour went by and he closed to within 500 yards, then hung up. About this time another bull behind me went nuts. This forced the big guy to close within 200 yards. At that point his demolition tactics began. He tore the living hell out of things. Sometimes this can be misleading with moose, but I could hear the sound of his palms on the brush, and that is NOT misleading. I answered back with my pitily little demonstation. The little bull behind me, said "screw this" and shut up. The big guy talked for a few then went silent on me. I could hear him sneaking. He got within 40 yards. I could see pieces but I needed one more step. Literally one more step. We stared at each other for about 10 minutes. He's disappear then come back. I needed one step. Then it was too dark for pics. I waited a bit just to see him. I finally issued a big challenge to his face, but he could obviously see me. He just stood there. I left.

You are such a tease Bone. I know Deerdog would like to help you get a closeup on that BIG bull. I believe he was leaving today for his Selkirk tag. I have his # if you need it (hint, hint). Leaving tomorrow myself for your home range to call/scout for my buddies Cowichie muzzy Bull tag.

I came home and think I will end up working a couple of my "vacation" days. I'm contemplating NE corner or Panhandle for a couple more moose excursion.

Doug, I had a hot bull come to kick my butt in Sherman this weekend. I also about had to dump a sow as her 2 cubs walked 15 feet in front of me. Tis HOT right now fo sure.

Seems like you're always gone from work....how many vacation days a year do you get? What do you do for work if you dont mind me asking? Nice pictures!
-
I'm a med tech in a hospital lab. I had the entire week off, without using an ounce of vacation because I worked double shifts the entire week before. I don't get overtime, but do get comp time.
I just got back from another adventure. I took my oldest daughter out. I had to return her to spokane. If I want to have a great day int he woods, all I need to do is take her. I called in 4 moose in the morning and played with another that was cowed up and refused to come. What a GREAT morning. You should have seen her eyes when I had three bulls coming in at once, and one emerged from the brush 20 feet in front of us.

Another great story Bone! Pretty soon it's going to be a trilogy with you traveling the land fighting ogres and all kinds of creatures to capture something big and your camera is the one camera to rule them all. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
