I found a little down time, so I thought I'd post a pic of the bull my buddy Jason got this year on our annual elk hunt. I didn't kill it, but did help on the recovery. Shot on opening day in western WA.

If that truely is a Wetside bull I am impressed!
-
Sure is... just look at those dark antlers ;)
-
WOW :yike: :yike:
-
nice bull but looks like your on the East side!!! what unit was it on the west side My guess would be near 578 West Klic!
-
Maybe I should try elk hunting  :chuckle:
-
Great Bull, But that looks like no ROSIE I've seen.... Not even in the Olympic Peninsula. ???????? :dunno:
-
Very Nice!
-
Sweet.
-
Beautiful bull.
-
Beautiful elk! Congrats to your buddy!
-
Thats a dandy.
Sure doesn't look like a westside bull. How did he get the skull so clean, so fast? Looks like its already been whitened
-
Nice Bull!! I love the area in the background as well!
-
Dang nice bull!
-
Congrats on a nice elk. Got to love the hunting attire.
-
Just because its westside doesn't mean its a rosie, lots of border units, nice bull!

It is most definitely not a rosie. We can probably all agree on that. Even then, most westside bulls have alders to rub on... giving them the reddish and/or blackish horns. Still a great fricken bull
-
Nice elk. I think it lived on the east side and commuted to the west side were he was shot.
-
my bet is a bull taken very close to the pacific crest trail.... the elk go back and forth all the time... from an east GMU to the west.... I have chased elk from the Taneum side and watched them run right up and over to the west side... Just because it is on the wet side doesn't make it a rosie...
-
i live in graham and i constantly have some huge bulls in my back yard and all their antlers are dark some light but the 2 biggest ones which are absolute pigs are as dark as night
-
That comes from rubbing them on the tires of a jeep he rolled with 'em.
-
the timber company sure did a great job thinin that timber...wish weyehauser would do that on the coast..it would be much easier finding animals :chuckle:...all jokes aside thats a great bull no matter where it was shot! congrats to the hunter!
-
Most of you guys are real close to accurate. Not a true Roosevelt. I believe it would be classified as a cascade roosevelt. And I do the european mounts myself. Let me post one more of that bull and also the whitetail he tagged this year.
-
Most of bulls taken on the westide arent rosies

:yeah:

Rockies were transplanted on the west side in the 1920s I believe. Most of the elk east of I-5 have rocky blood in them.

How to...cut off all the flesh you can with a knife, then submerge it in boiling water (only the skull; not the antlers!) with a little soap (some say) until the rest of the flesh can be picked off (tedious work; be careful in the nasal passages because it is delicate), then submerge it in peroxide (or bleach?) until it is white to your liking (again not the antlers!). It only takes a couple of days.

I do a lot of skull whitening (not bleaching). If you kill an animal anytime in the near future, please follow the steps above. I'd like to see the damage the boiling water and bleach will do to the skull. Thats if you kill an animal. Big IF.

Personally I have only used boiling water and then peroxide (I think I've heard others say they've used bleach and some say they put a little soap in the water; maybe I'm not remembering those two things correctly).
I have several skulls done exactly this way (and I killed the animals; what do you mean Big IF?). The boiling and the peroxide did no damage whatsoever...

i use powdered ph increaser like you would put in your hot tub when i boil. it makes the meat turn rubbery and either fall right off or fairly easy to pull off. after its clean i paint the skull with a paste mixture of powdered bleach and hydrogen peroxide while its still wet from boiling. chain it to something and let it dry in direct sunlight for a half a day and brush it off. the ph increaser makes a nasty chemical/meat steam you dont wanna breathe but it works awesome and none of the boiling or chemicals have ever damaged any of my skulls, just keep a close eye on it and dont boil it any longer than you need to or you might. anyways that is an awesome bull and a nice buck too! and good job on the euro mounts
