Here's the buck I took. My buddy and I hunted from opening day of "High Buck" three days in I took this one (24" outside spread). We saw one bigger buck, but couldn't get a shot at him (dang clouds). Passed a few bucks as well (6 legal bucks passed). I saw three much larger bucks in pre-season scouting. Packed him down and came back to look for another for my buddy, he passed 8 legal bucks... one was almost there, wider than mine, but a little too spindly. Special thanks to Benchmark Barrels!
Shot was 482 yards downhill .91 cos.

The Rifle is a Remington 700 LA (trued up by Benchmark)
AICS Chassis system (heavy)
Benchmark Barrel .277", 1:9 twist, chambered in 270 Winchester, 28" long and fluted with "mini muscle brake" muzzle brake.
Factory trigger tuned down to around 2lbs.
20 MOA base...(can't remember brand)
Leupold Mk IV 4.5-14x50 with TMR reticle and M1 turrets
Seekins rings etc.
This rifle is heavy for hunting.... over 14lbs. with everything including bi-pod and sling. I use this rifle for competitions as well. Did the Field Shooter's Challenge right before the hunt and placed 4th.... not bad considering I also acted as an RO for the match and had to shoot every stage first.
Im shooting Matrix ballistics 165gr bullets. The actual BC is about .650, and I'm shooting them at 2890fps. The ballistics are excellent. In my usual shooting spots it's normal to get first round hits beyond 1200yds (wouln't shoot game that far). I've always loved the 270 winchester. When I got involved in long range shooting, my old 270 just collected dust. When I found out about these new high BC bullets, I knew it was time for another 270 win. Terminal Ballistics were excellent with this bullet, wouldn't hesitate to use them on larger/tougher game either.
Pic from the match

Seriously? He shoots competition. Look at his gun. Under 500 yards is nothing for that gun, and him, obviously.
Good work man thats a beautiful buck, hope you saved the cape its gorgeous.
-
Really nice buck  !!!! Congrats and welcome to the site
-
Nice buck, sweet rifle.
-
Nothing to do with his gun. to me hunting does not involve 500 yard shots... lots of people will agree with me but people wont say anything.
which is fine

i would agree if you dont know what your doing, with the right equipment and skill why not, as long as you have the savy to walk over ther and check incase you might have missed then no biggie, watched a guy personally that i know his name is john and he cracked an elk at 952 yds one shot and the elk hit the deck didnt even wiggle. so imho if you can with complete comfort i say go for it
-
Love the cheat sheet inside the scope cover
Beautiful buck!
-
i might have asked this already but is that a blacktail, it sure looks like it, but it also has that mule deer look... i am so confused :yike: :'( but damn it looks like a blackie
-
Great buck! Looks like an awesome hunt. My good friend Chris works for Ron at Benchmark. Great company, they build killer guns!

Sweet buck

Iwill do that some days soon! Very nice deer!
-
Enjoyed the photo assay as much as the nice buck!

It's a mule deer... that would be awesome as a black tail though!
I totaly understand someone's reservations about taking game beyond 300yds... as drop, wind drift, and (at ranges beyond 800) time of flight come into play. I'm a very conservitave long range shooter (or at least I think I am). Just because I can make the shot doesn't mean I'll take it. I could have taken a larger buck at a greater range... due to adverse wind conditions I decided to get closer. I would bet a large sum of money I could have made that shot (in the vitals, not just hitting the buck).... but there was a chance of over/underestimating the wind (it's complicated but the bullet would have gone through an extreme wind for a short distance before dropping back below the canyon walls where the wind was much easier to dope). The clouds moved in and never moved back out... so I wound up taking a smaller buck a coulple days later... that's just hunting.
Here's an article I've written on the issue's involved with long range culture. I would say I agree with the ethics of few long range hunters by percentage (I used to be more optimistic).
http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Battle-For-Long-Range-Hunting-Ethics&id=3105384 (http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Battle-For-Long-Range-Hunting-Ethics&id=3105384)
I would be happy to show someone what this rifle is capable of in field conditions at 500yds. I shoot most every weekend when it's not hunting season. I would be shocked if someone could take an average hunting rifle and pop off clay pigeons at regular hunting ranges (within 300yds) the way this rifle is capable at ranges out to and beyond 500yds... especially if steep uphill and downhill shots are taken like what one will usually find on these "high buck hunts". I almost never shoot from a bench.... I've yet to stumble upon a bench rest in the field. If one has not done extensive target shooting with improvised field positions, they would probably greatly overestimate their ability to make good hits on game an thus are likely to take unethical shots.

Nice Buck. Sweet Gun. Beautiful pictures! looks like you guys earned every inch of country and animal
-
Nicely done!
-
Outstanding...thats a sweet buck
-
Nice work

Very nice rig. IMO you have appear to have earned the right for the long shot. If you are willing to work that hard to become proficient and extend your range, then the shot by definition would be ethical for you. Same as some people (we all know who they are) who never practice with their rifle except and afternoon to "sight in", should not be shooting past 150 yards. The "ethics" is determined by skill not distance. :twocents:
By the way that is a crazy high BC for the bullet, I am going to have to load some up.
-
Ya... I always say, if you can't put the first shot exactly where it's supposed to go, it's too far no matter how close it is. The BC is awesome and with the long barrel I'm running WSM velocities (for a standard length barrel of course). Another buddy of mine is having an identical rifle build for a long range steel team match held near Kettle Falls, WA. Allot of the matches are starting to say no more magnums (they tend to knock down target stands). It's good to find a standard cartridge/bullet combo that offers magnum ballistics.
Here's a buck from pre-season scouting (I was hunting bear at the time plus scouting for bucks)... saw two that were bigger than him, but they didn't bed down to have their picture taken.

Great pic's

What a cool lookin buck. Great pics....that pic where a guy is looking over that foggy cragg looks like an entrance to an icy hell. Thanks for posting.
-
Thats a great buck. I cant beleive your getting a 165 grain bullet out of a 270 nearly 2900 fps!
-
great buck
-
I saw your post of this hunt on Seattle Guns a while back, and told some of my friends to check it out. That is a nice heavy buck. Good looking rifle too. I really like how you earned that buck. I don't care what anyone says, if you pack into the high country, and take a mature animal, you've earned it, no matter what the range is.
-
Dandy buck, cool pics too by the way!
-
:hello: Mutch better .....

There is no load data on the Matrix page. Do you know if they have any. Also that is a mighty long bullet, what is the OAL for that load? Maybe to long for a standard magazine and increased chamber pressure. Do you load them yourself?
