Title: Massive Bear spotted
Post by: ydeardorff on October 01, 2011, 07:44:47 PM
I went out to glass out some high alpine meadows with my mom and sister along for the ride. I looked around and didn't see anything, and then something caught my eye on the back of prairie mountain a few miles away. It has a big alpine meadow on the back side of the peak. It reminded me of something akin to a flea on a dogs back, moving around on the green alpine meadow.
I broke out my spotting scope, and could see this was a huge bear. Very dark black brown in color, and it appeared to be taking part of the huckleberry patches up there. I could not ascertain whether it was a grizzly, or a black bear at that distance. I also didn't see any cubs, or anything that looked like cubs with it.
I got hunting fever right away. I went down and bought a forest service map and talked to the person on duty there. They said it is inaccessible by car. You can get within a mile of the mountain base, but you'd have to hike the rest of the way in.
Given the size of this bear, and the topography this guy isn't gonna get nabbed by me. So I figured Id share with the group here to see if someone is up to the challenge.
I was told there is an outfit the uses pack mules for this kind of adventure, and it would more than likely be  a several day camping trip.

Anyway now you know where a big one is. Let me know if you get him/her Id like to see a pic of it.

I saw a bear this morning as well.  I could have shot him, but would have required a helicopter or chuck norris to pack him out :bash:

Well it would be an extreme adventure, and not to be done alone, but prairie mt, is east of darrington, about a mile or two.

Doubtful. The forest service said those roads haven't been maintained since 2005. Plus the peak is very remote, and very high. Most people wouldnt bother.
But if it is, my bad... :sry:

The prairie mtn has a few people who hunt it.  It can be good, accessability isnt great.  Pack outs are tough, but it gets done and sometimes with great results.

ydeardorff...thanks for posting. I don't have the time but sounds like a great opprotunity at a quality bear. Not to mention a great adventure. Now if it was better weather or the other side of the pass....I'd be on my way right now.

Elkslayer,

Is that the pic of the bear off of the meadow? He sure looked bigger to me, given the distance. Even the forest service ppl said it had to be huge to see it at that distance. That looks like about the same size bear I just saw Oct 1st.
Bowhunter45,
Its not a cliff face, but the angle of the terrain will damn near have you on yer face climbing by the looks of it. The distance was about 3.3 miles(as a crow flies). From road 2436 where I was standing on th top of the long narrow ridge section staring back across to the peak. I hear the rain is the best time for bear hunting, gives ya an edge on sneaking up on em.

Anthony Reese is just up the road from ya there in Darrington. Hike in, drop it, and give him a call to haul it out.  :chuckle:

 :yeah:

Been on this one bear 3 weeks in a row. Always in the same spot right above a cliff. He hangs out in a cut above a cliff every day. He's a big one too but the cut is very steep. One slip and your going down and then off of the cliff. If I had rope he'd be a gonner.

Ya no kidding. Thought about just going to get a rope but the lengthI would need would be pretty expensive not to mention other stuff like some kind of harness ect. Then I don't really know the proper procedure for hooking up ect. Anyone out there have climbing gear? We can share the bear..... :chuckle: :chuckle:
