So, here I was on Friday evening with a couple hours free (in the middle of a week and a half of out of town family) and I wanted to make a few more photos worth of progress on the knife build I'm doing the step-by step pictorial on. Well, I go out to the shed and realize I don't have any brass stock for the bolsters, just nickle silver! :bash:
So, after a few minutes on the internet, I've got brass barstock coming in from 4 different directions, but none of it is here yet, so I have to shift over to the next order in line...
This was a special request with a wrinkle... I don't believe it's ever been done before and I really hope it works.
The basics were a pure, no frills but purely custom, working Coyote knife, and the wrinkle was a tail stripper built into the grip. Needless to say, I got excited about trying to make it happen!
Just got done...

(There's no mark on the blade, that's overhead power lines I didn't notice.)

I'll be sending the new owner a PM then heading out to build a Kydex pack sheath for it. (PUT THE PACK SHEATH ON BEFORE USING THE STRIPPER... DOGGONE IT! It's SHARP!)
The grips are cedar colored Micarta, Stainless Mosaic pins, and 2 Silver Nickle pins.

Beautiful work as always. As always, impeccable work.
-
Can't say I have ever seen a tail stripper incorperated into the handle of a knife. I am curriose to know how well it works.
-
I bet it works awesome. AGAIN outstanding.
Funny about the powerlines..............thats not a blemish, but the space shuttle flying over. Just make sure you are always fully clothed when taking shots of your knives, I'd hate to see you end up on the internet as one of these naked guys trying to sell something on ebay or something.

I second what Bone said! Awesome work, still saving cash ;)for one of those Oregon skinners

Pops out, clicks back in, nice and crisp. Please use it when you're hooking a tail! I DON'T want to hear about the 78 stitches on your inner thigh!
-
You should have seen the long handled caper he did for W70. In the hands of a Taxidermist that thing would have been like a surgical instrument, even with a guy with big hands like mine. Course I haven't seen any work he has done that wasn't awesome..........
-
Okay, explain tail hooking? What is it and why?
Beautiful work as always. Going to have to get a knife and matching call one of these days........
-
Steve, that turned out better than I could have imagined. Beautiful knife. I think the tail stripper will work perfectly. I promise to go out and shoot a nappy summer coyote to try it out on, and get some photos posted. Kind of cruel that I have to sit giddy for a few days knowing it is complete, but waiting for it to arrive. I guess I'll survive.
For any of you that haven't had the pleasure of dealing with Steve yet, I can attest to him having great communication, follow-through, and as you can see wonderful craftsmanship.
-
Dekuma, you need to pull the core or tailbone out of inside of the tail for taxidermy or pelt purpose, or it will rot and stink and basically won't be as nice of a skin. It doesn't come out easy I promise. If you ahve the right tool, it will come out easiers. The skin is very thin and very easy to tear. Its virtually impossible to skin out.

WOW !!
That is beautiful as always Steve, Not sure I have ever seen anything like that before, let us know how it works tlbradford and maybe I will have to order one for my "nephew" Chris !!
Nice Work !!

Skinned out the bear in about 10 minutes on rocky steep ground, and used it to bone out everything as well. It held its edge great, and the grip and balance was fantastic even with blood on it. I will definately be getting another one. I still haven't got after the coyotes yet, but I will be soon. Thanks again Steve.

NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
nice knife there. slydog ate dinner three time's with us road in my van this last weekend at the predator expo in kansas. i got his estrous chirp Howler. never seen a call like that. but that style of knife is what i like. nice knife and dandy bear.
-
Thanks guys. Rick, You'll have fun using that estrous chirp. If you have any questions about when or how to use it, give me a call. I have been testing it out for the past year and it can have some really amazing reactions to it. You can reproduce the sound on an open reed, but his call has a much better pitch and volume.
-
Way to go on the bear, TL!
That Japanese 440C is top drawer stuff, no two ways about it. Save a few bucks with a factory blade, but you really don't lose much, they're excellent. Really glad it's getting put to work!
-
Very Nice!
-
Steve, let me know if you are putting testimonials on your web site and I'll get you the picture file and a more flowery write-up.
-
Hadn't thought about that yet... too much going on! Yeah! E-mail a testimonial, just regular, honest, plain talkin' is my preference... I'll set up a new page on the site. Thanks TL, I'm still watching for the bear story!!!
