Title: Coyote Madness IV - (December 10, 2011 - February 28, 2012)
Post by: tlbradford on October 02, 2011, 06:41:37 PM
Rules have been modified to meet WDFW requirements and concerns.... PLEASE READ

Coyote Contest Rules:
1.  30 teams max
2.  10 Members max per team
3.  Washington Coyotes Only Coyotes must have been taken during the 2011 Fall and early 2012 Winter hunting season. NO ROADKILL
4.  Entries Accepted Submit photos beginning 12:01 am Dec 10, 2011 to Midnight Feb 28, 2012.
5.  Eligible Hunting Area includes any area statewide open for coyote hunting
6.  State Hunting Licenses & Regulations Apply (hunting at night, weapons restrictions, area restrictions, see hunting regulations)
7.  Licensed Guests/Kids may accompany team members and hunt as follows.  A guest hunter can be a newbie or a relative from out of town.  If a guest kills an animal while hunting with a team member then it can count toward your team total as long as someone from the team was there.  A guest hunter can't go out by themself and shoot coyotes for any team. A guest hunter's coyotes can only count toward your total for one hunt. If your guest hunts with you more than once, they must become a team member for their coyotes to be entered. Kids (under 18) can accompany team members and contribute to the teams total as often as desired as long as they are with a team member.
8.  Honor system applies
9.  Photo of kill with at least one team member must to be submitted for points to be awarded. (or a card with team name shown in photo) Photos should be in as good of taste as possible, with the nastiest side of the coyote towards the ground. Any photo judged to be of poorer taste than necessary will be disqualified.
10.  Adding A Team Member This is allowed after the start of the contest, but any coyotes shot prior to hunting with your team do not count.
11.  No hand gestures needed for photos.
12.  This is a "fun" event.  No money or big prizes involved, so I would hope our members keep it on the up and up.
13.  Don't drag frozen coyotes around to different locations and take pictures.
14.  Highest Scoring Team will be based on the point system shown below.
15.  Member Taking Most Coyotes For this winner each coyote taken during contst scores only 1 point, regardless of location or weapon.
16.  Member Scoring Most Points Will be based on the point system shown below.
17.  Most Coyotes Taken In A 12 Hour Period Take one photo of coyotess (both ears of an animal are acceptable in lieu of a pelt or in the round).
18.  Heaviest Coyote You will need to show a clearly visible picture of the scale weight.
19.  Best Photo To be decided by member poll at the end of the contest.
20.  Best Sportsmanship Judges will choose the participant who exhibits the most sportsmanlike conduct, no kills are necessary.

This is Washington state law and we do not want to cross into any shaded areas here on the forum. So I have sent a request in to the proper person for a determination on this competition as well as our Head & Horns competitions. Twice before I was involved in coyote contests and in both cases they said we needed the permit. I would much rather get the permit than be in violation of the law. I am sure everyone feels the same way. Last winter I heard about one coyote hunt that was shut down, we don't want that to happen.

WAC 232-12-169
Hunting contests.

A person wishing to hold a hunting contest must comply with the following provisions:

      (1) Only organizations filed with the state of Washington as a nonprofit corporation may apply for a hunting contest permit.

      (2) Hunting contest permit applications shall be submitted to the department 30 days prior to the date for which the contest is proposed.

      (3) Applications must include the permit fee required by RCW 77.32.211. The fee will be returned if the permit is denied.

      (4) Contests are restricted to the species approved on the permit.

      (5) Total value of prizes per contest shall not exceed $2000.

      (6) Entry fees or requests for donations are prohibited.

      (7) It is unlawful to fail to comply with the conditions of a hunting contest permit.

Hunting contests which may adversely affect wildlife resources will be denied.

I would like to kick in a few bucks for the permit fee if allowed. And for the pole sitters watching out there I am volunteering this of my own will, I have not been asked or suggested to do this.

I haven't seen my coyote gun since last spring,(has anybody seen it )  :chuckle:  it may take 30 or 40 rounds just to learn how to shoot again.  With all the dawgs that were killed in this area last year, they have rebounded really well.

Looks like SBA will play again this year, VV, Falfire,Bullelk, Big10 so far. I'm probaly gonna be the one that drags the team down this year as I am pretty much working up to 7 days a week until we get the new radiology system up and running. Hopefully it'll be over sometime in Jan. Maybe I'll start night calling :)

I will allow trapped coyotes at 1 point each.  No bonus for shotgun.  It isn't more difficult, just a different tool, which can be better than a rifle under the right circumstances.

How is Muzzle diffrent , compared to a shotgun? Some reach out to quit a distance now.Seems like a "similar tool".

NEVERTHELESS! I'm back from 7 hard days of hunting (deer) and ready to take some fustration out on some yotes.   :whoo:

Sometimes that would work out okay when you kill a few on one stand or a short distance apart, but there are way too many times I put a couple of miles in between stands and I ain't carrying stinkin' bloody dogs from stand to stand.

One thing that I think we should do, is for all coyotes taken for this event, we should have a card or sheet of paper with the team name and 2011/2012 in bold letters place next to the kills so no one is attaching photos from years gone by.  We all can afford to snag a piece of paper and a magic marker to print the TEAM name and year lay it next to or on top of the kill and take a photograph right after a kill. I'm certain since most of us here have a computer to access this site, most of us have a printer. Simply come up with your Team logo and the 2011/2012 and print out a few to keep with you while hunting. Just my  :twocents:

Something like this......   FALFire
            TEAM SBA

           2011 - 2012

Ok guys I'm not on a team yet this year but I have to share a funny story with you.

Last week while deer hunting with another member in the asotin area I kicked a rock over the edge of a draw and out came a dog in  around 2nd gear, my buddy saw it first and we both sat down real fast and leveled down on him as he was going over the hill at about 250 300 yards. He shoots a 300 RUM and I shoot a 300 WSM, in the race to see who drills him first we some how both let go at the same time! this dog went flying! I mean he came off the ground! I looked at my partner and said " I was dead on!" he said "me to!" We sat and wondered how many bullets that dog had avoided in his life then get drilled with 330 grains of nosler! Sorry had to share that one wish I had it on video  :chuckle: :chuckle:

How many Points is a legal Idaho or Montana Wolf kill worth?

5) Misc. called animals (ie: badgers, cougars, wolves - Idaho) will be awarded points by a random drawing of 10, 20, or 30 points that are selected out of a hat.

Can we fix that part as well?

I think that anyone on a team that kills a lions, legal wolves, etc should get points whether or not it was called in.  I think all predators should be worth points.

So, is this gonna happen?  There have been numerous people making teams, but the first page with the team list hasn't been updated. I know it's hunting season and all, but I'm just curious. :-)

Can we fix that part as well?

I think that anyone on a team that kills a lions, legal wolves, etc should get points whether or not it was called in.  I think all predators should be worth points.

There is already a provision in the rules for awarding points for cats, wolves, etc.  Pretty good, IMHO, being as it's called COYOTE Madness IV.  :twocents:  ;)

The question I have is points for a lion (for example) even if it wasn't called it.  It currently is worded that they have to be called in.  I would guess that most of the yotes killed aren't called it, or that it is 50/50 at best.

In my opinion, a kill is a kill.  But then, I'm a barbarian!

I think that anyone on a team that kills a lions, legal wolves, etc should get points whether or not it was called in.  I think all predators should be worth points.

Basically, I want to eliminate animals shot over bait or hounds.  So lucking into these animals is acceptable as well.

Ok teams updated through this post, but scores are not entered for the coyotes killed yet.  I will make up the scoresheet and get it entered in soon.

Good job all.  I spent the morning trying for a lion, but had to settle for a couple of grouse and quail.  Had one coyote at 75 yards, but he knew where the Reservation line was.

Good luck everyone and let me know if I have any mistakes on the teams.

Rick,

Congrats are due to the shooter, VarmintVentilator whacked that one, I just got to watch and call out distance numbers to him as I watched through the range finder. He popped one the other day at 535 yards but it wasn't hit hard enough to stop it so there just might be a dead dog out there somewhere if someone wants it. Ya just gotta find it  :dunno:

I talked with Donny Martorello yesterday 11-03-11, apparently our permit request was handed off and somehow overlooked, he said we must have the permit so we are not breaking the law and he will get it coming to us. But until we have the permit the contest cannot begin so I am locking the topic until we get the permit.

I will post here as soon as we get the permit and I will unlock the topic so you guys can start entering your animals. Once we have the permit, we will allow entry of any animals taken from Nov 1 to Feb 28. But the contest cannot begin until we have the permit. Save your entries until the contest begins.

Talked with Donny Martorello again today. The coyote contest permit is in the mail, as soon as I recieve the permit I will post that the contest can begin and you can all begin posting your entries.

No entries will be allowed until the permit is in hand as required by law.

Go ahead and continue forming teams for now. Due to data lost when the forum was down, if you formed a team between Nov 4 and Nov 16, you need to repost it again.

I called in 4 coyotes today. Problem was I'm hunting for deer and only had my bow. It's a long story i'sll share later but I called one in by barking like a dog back and forth for 10 min.  I f would have had a gun it would have been game on.

I know the mail is slow, but I think the permit should have showed up by now.   :dunno:  Maybe they "FORGOT" to mail it?  ;)

There are no special provisions given to shotgun or handgun kills, you get 1 point or 3 if you are a west sider. This contest is not about calling any predator, shoot 'em over bait piles or while they are raiding your trashcan.  :mgun2: :whoo:

Here are the rules from page 1:

Rules:
1) 5 members max per team - guest/kids can count towards your total as long as they aren't regular members of your team.  *Here is what I had in mind for a "guest hunter"  Sometimes you take a newbie out, sometimes a relative rolls into town and you take them out.  If you kill an animal on these hunts then it can count toward your total as long as someone from the team was there.  A guest hunter can't go out by themselves one time, kill ten coyotes, and have that total counted to someone's team.  (For rule clarification: A guest hunter can only count toward your total for one hunt, and must be accompanied by a team member.)
2) No roadkill
3) Honor system applies
4) Photo of kill with at least one team member needs to be submitted for points to be awarded. (Or a card with team name)
5) You can add someone to your team after the 1st, but any coyotes they shoot prior to be putting on your team do not count.
6) No hand gestures needed for photos.  This is a "fun" event.  No money or big prizes involved, so I would hope our members keep it on the up and up.  Don't drag frozen coyotes around to different locations and take pictures.  For the heaviest and smallest coyote, you will need to show a picture of the scale.  For the most animals taken in a 12 hour period, you will need to take a group shot (both ears of the animal are acceptable in lieu of a pelt or in the round).  For the most animals award, I will be counting all animals, regardless of type as 1 point (ie, 4 bobcats, 3 coyotes = 7).  This is not the calculation for your point total, just that part of the contest that applies to animals.

Scoring:
1) West Side Coyote - 3
2) East side Coyote - 1
3) Bobcats - 4
4) Foxes - 2
5) Misc. called animals (ie: badgers, cougars, wolves - Idaho) will be awarded points by a random drawing of 10, 20, or 30 points that are selected out of a hat.
6) Multipliers: Muzzleloader - points x 1.5, Compound Bow - points x 3, Traditional Bow - points x 5, Out-of state animals - points x .5
7) Photo .5/per animal - capped at 10 per team

I'd like to be added to a team. I'm heading out deer hunting in the AM- If I get time I might do a few sets. It doesn't look like I'll be doing much hunting this year because of work.  Also- I no longer have a coyote gun :( , 22-250 went bye bye. Hopefully there will be something left if I get one because it will be with the .50 muzzle loader or the .300 win mag. :chuckle:

I guess first team that wakes up in the morning and says "add addicted to my team" would be good with me, i'm abou to head out on a hunting trip and i'll see if i can have points when i return at the end of the weekend. .

Well, not likely, we did come off of a Holiday weekend and and the slow boat from China, that brings the mail, is really only a one man rubber raft (read inner tube) and the Captain uses a spoon for an ore.

I really doubt that WDFW wants this thing to continue as planned, we will likely never see their permit, more likely they will try to fine the owners of this website for any past contests  :bash:

Rick, I really don't think anyone here is upset in the least with Dale. Personally, I think Dale is doing a tremendous job and his performance here has certainly not gone un-noticed. I do however believe the WDFW is not stepping up to the plate on their end. I know it likely boils down to a secretary dragging her feet but still, it's the whole idea of the permit thing anyway.  :dunno:

Well guys I am pretty frustrated too.  :bash:

The permit has been held up again, I have had several discussions on the phone, over email, and even in person, regarding this permit. Today I offered a small change in the rules to try and get this through, we'll see what happens. If we don't get a positive reply this week we'll pull the word contest, remove any prizes and rules, and you guys can just bang away and post your photos for everyones enjoyment.

In the meantime you are all welcome to coyote hunt, we just can't enter any animals in the contest until it's approved and I have the permit in hand. They told me I would have an answer Wednesday, let's give it till the end of the week to see what happens with WDFW, then I will let you know if we can have the contest or not.

Why don't we just call it "Coyote Madness" eliminate the word contest, who cares  :dunno: A place where everyone can show photos of their kills. That way there is no contest, no BS and we simply share our photos. Who really cares about prizes anyways, this is for fun. I mean if you were giving away a two week hunting trip to Alaska or a new boat okay, but if I need a new call, I'll buy it.

We may have to drop the word "TEAM" so not to conflict with rules of the GODS at WDFW  :dunno:

Why don't we just call it "Coyote Madness" eliminate the word contest, who cares   A place where everyone can show photos of their kills. That way there is no contest, no BS and we simply share our photos. Who really cares about prizes anyways, this is for fun. I mean if you were giving away a two week hunting trip to Alaska or a new boat okay, but if I need a new call, I'll buy it.

We may have to drop the word "TEAM" so not to conflict with rules of the GODS at WDFW

When I created the thing a couple years ago, that was the whole point.

I understand that, and it was a good plan. Somehow, this thing got all turned inside out! Oh........... but isn't that what happens when Goberment gets involved in anything?

Very true.   We obviously try to do things by the rules, unfortunately sometimes that creates one hell of a headacheand I add....makes very little sense sometimes

Here's my  :twocents:

I would rather hear the stories behind every dead coyote posted, just looking at a pic of a dead coyote without any story behind it is pretty boring. I imagine any coyotes shot from 10_1 to present probably won't have much if any "stories" to go with them if they are posted.

Thanks Dale for trying so hard to get it thru

And we do appreciate that, this website is representative of a group and cause so that only makes sense. But if there is no "CONTEST", then we as a group, have not broken any rules......Right?

So the people you are dealing with in wdfw are liars? Didn't they tell you they mailed you the permit? It makes me sick to think that the wdfw thinks that little of us. Even though they are supposed to work for us. I applaud your effort and appreciate everything you do for us. Thank you

Grundy, Donny had told me he was mailing it before he left for vacation that day. He didn't know it was going to be held up by the Assistant Director, so it wasn't a lie, just the way the circumstances ended up. Then there was a delay before the Assistant Director and I could organize our schedules to have a phone conference. After our discussion, I can say they had legitimate concerns which needed addressed.
Thanks, Dale

The WDFW should be paying bounty's on every coyote we shoot instead of creating hoops we have to jump through in order to have a simple contest, in which there are NO PRIZES.

Hello? Is anybody from the WDFW reading this? All we want to do is have some fun and in the process reduce the coyote population, which will in turn, help to increase the deer population! Aren't you guys in favor of having more deer for us to hunt? (hint- more deer helps sell more tags)

Think about that for a good minute  :dunno: Using our money to end what we love to do ....Go hunting ...how sweet is that !?

A good question has been asked:

Quote
Dale, do coyotes in other States count in the Madness or is it ONLY Wa. State dogs?

Some guys have the privilege to hunt Montana and Idaho for a good number of dogs, but the rest of us here are stuck in Wa.  Those of us on the Eastside have it pretty good but I personally believe that is an unfair advantage to those living on the Westside of the State.

Do you guys want out of state coyotes to still be eligible? I can ask WDFW if we can allow it, if you want it that way. Not sure they can permit us that way, but I can ask if desired. What do you all think?

I think it all looks good.  Thanks again Dale.  The only thing I don't care for is the 10 member team.  While I see that anyone should be able to participate if they wanted to and 30 teams with 10 members is a 300 person limit.  Can we keep it at 5 unless we run across the issue of all filled up then add more?

Either way, it's all good.  I'm guessing that any changes are a pain in the backside to do.  So no worries.  Those of us that shoot yotes do it with or without a coyote madness, but it is one of my favorite parts of this forum.  There are some great guys on here   I do hope that this "contest" encourages fellow hunters to get outdoors with friends and family aiding our game species to boot.

I am going to have to side with Gringo When it comes to the number of members on each team.  But in the end it really does not matter that is the beauty of this Forum.  Out of all the derby's I've been involved with this is by far the most fun. With the least amount of drama, it is unfortunate that it has come to the point where it has to be governed in such a manner, but it is what it is.  Dale thanks again for all of your hard work we really do appreciate it I would hunt coyotes anyway but this just makes it far more fun.

Actually I don't know if a trail camera picture counts? I don't think so. I was thinking the 1/2 point was for coyotes that a guy called in and took a picture of....

Maybe we need some clarification on this. Because I could get lots of trail camera pictures of them if I tried.

Gringo

I was hoping tlbradford would weigh in, this is his baby, but I was anxious to turn everyone loose to start posting their pics starting tonight after midnight. Maybe we could keep it at 5 man teams until we have 30 teams and then start stacking people one or two at a time onto teams so no team has ten and another 4, or something like that, what do you guys think?

Bobcat, can you pull the photo till after midnight, then put it back up so we collect the point for the photo? Unless someone else thinks it shouldn't be allowed, I saw nothing saying trail cams don't count in the original rules, unless I missed it.  :chuckle:

Ya I know we don't stand a chance against "gringo the slayer".....  :chuckle:

Rick, that donation would be awesome, tell me which prize you want your call put on?

Bone, I don't think there is a problem entering him tommorrow. The WDFW is writing the other permits so we can enter big game taken this fall when we get the permit the seasons will have already ended. I wrote the coyote rules so everyone can enter their coyotes in the contest. Several guys are planning on entering photos of the yotes already taken this fall/winter.

It says:
3.  Only Coyotes May Be Entered Coyotes must have been taken during the 2011 Fall and early 2012 Winter hunting season. NO ROADKILL
4.  Entries Accepted Submit photos beginning 12:01 am Dec 10, 2011 to Midnight Feb 28, 2012.

That is correct, any previous photos are not entered. Anyone in the contest needs to wait till after midnight.

Recieved two clarifications from WDFW minutes ago, I will modify rules slightly to reflect this:

• Coyotes that are harvested outside Washington cannot be a part of the contest.  Washington statute(s) and rule(s) for ‘hunting contests’ only apply to Washington and Washington wildlife.
• All team members, including guests, are required to have a Washington hunting license (small game or any big game license) to harvest coyotes.

I had assumed tlbradford meant "dead on road" so that is what I meant. I think as long as hunting regulations are foillowed, coyotes taken by any legal means should be allowed. For example I hunt a lot of farms with internal private roads and mountain roads that are legal to shoot a coyote along. If anyone does not understand which types of roadways are legal to shoot along, you had better check before hunting.

Perhaps someone can offer legal clarification on this for everyones benefit. We do not want any mistakes by anyone, it would decrease our chances of being permitted again.

I think there is an obvious reason you get 3 points for westside coyotes. :twocents:

Prizes: We now have donated prizes for each winner!

Now is a good time to look for any other flaws in these rules.......

I agree, we need everyone on the same page. I'm hoping someone will post up the legal language regarding shooting along roadways so everyine knows. I don't really have time to look for it today.

Another thought, this is the first time I've had involvement in this contest, if I am offbase with something compared to previous years, please let me know.

Id like to join a team for fun if somebody would have me, all my hunting buddies linger on HW but the only one that is a member is hardcore into ducks right now, would be hard for me to form a team.  Also don't expect much from me being a rookie to predator calling, but when i get into something new I hit it head first and learn fast.  Sounds fun nonetheless.

the way I understand it they do count as Nov 1 st but since we did not have a Permit yet they removed the photos but you can now post them back as of midnight tonight ....Everyone needs to read page #1 think it covers all of it ..The only thing I have a problem with is having at least one team member in the picture because I usually hunt by myself so thats hard to do ....So out of 7 I have killed only 2 count  :dunno: :bash:

My understanding is that you can have either one team member in the photo or a paper with your team name one it next to the coyote. Do you have that with the other 5 coyotes? If not, write on a peice of paper of you team name and your name and take a picture of your coyote with that paper in it. Hope that helps

Rule #9.  Photo of kill with at least one team member must to be submitted for points to be awarded. (or a card with team name shown in photo)

There are lots of kids over here that think that driving the roads and shooting at them from the truck is the only way to hunt dogs but VarmintVentilator and I get out and walk our azz's off trying to let the air out of these things. We do a lot of calling with E-callers and mouth callers both. I've had friends come over to hunt dogs and when they find out we actually do a ton of walking they are flat wore out when they go home. We'll be hitting it tomorrow at 6am and I can guarentee we won't be shooting' from the truck and it's gonna to be fricken cold out there.

Bone or Tbrd,
I think starting a new thread might be worth while to save 20+ pages of nadda.  Better lock this one up to stop people from posting dog pics here in a few hours.

Bone and Gringo are right, it will make it simple if we start out with a new topic and everyone posts there photos there. I will post up a new topic that starts out clean.

To clarify a few things:

FYI -  The rules will clearly state: Coyotes may be taken by any legal means.. I think that is the easiest way to avoid lots of discussions about what each person thinks is "fair chase or ethical" coyote hunting.

Shooting from truck. - To clarify, no coyotes may be shot from inside a vehicle, you may not be in or on a vehicle when shooting while hunting in Washington.

9.  Photo of kill with at least one team member must to be submitted for points to be awarded. (or a card with team name shown in photo) Photos should be in as good of taste as possible, with the nastiest side of the coyote towards the ground. Any photo judged to be of poorer taste than necessary will be disqualified.
